Chapter 18: Heart Medicine — Eat, the food is getting cold.

Even though Qin Kong was known as the third young master of the Qin Family, there were still the outstanding eldest and second young masters above him. Even if he had finished studying for his MBA abroad and returned home with honor, he could only be given odd jobs by his two excelling older brothers.

“Qin Kong doesn’t have an important position in Qin Zhi at all. The job title of Product Development Manager they had hung on him was meaningless. All the decision-making power rests in the hands of his eldest brother Qin Lang. According to his confession, he was at a branch office abroad at the time of the murder. Something urgent had popped up, so he had hurried to handle it—although he went with Qin Lang, truthfully, whether he did go or not does not matter. In addition, Qin Lang wouldn’t voluntarily invite him to go either.” Zuo Yi drank the coffee on his desk, the slightly bitter taste causing him to frown minutely. “Yet if he married Ye Zhen Zhen, the stocks and the cash Ye Hong Sheng had set aside for Ye Zhen Zhen would essentially belong to him in all but name. Just think for a moment! He was originally about to acquire all these resources only to suddenly learn that Ye Hong Sheng wanted to change his will—how do you think he would’ve reacted?”

After Zuo Yi tossed this question out, he stared at the materials on his desk silently. A rare silence descended over the office, everyone seemingly pensive. At this moment, they reviewed every suspect’s background. After ascertaining Qin Kong’s position in the Qin Family, not only did his testimony of being absent at the scene become increasingly strange, his motivation of marrying Ye Zhen Zhen was also becoming less pure.

Two years previously, Ye Hong Sheng’s health had rapidly took a turn for the worse. He sought out his best friend Lawyer Qian to draw up a will with the intention of setting aside his entire estate to his granddaughter Ye Zhen Zhen. Not long after this will was drawn up, the third son of the Qin Family, Qin Kong, began to fiercely pursue Ye Zhen Zhen, very quickly gaining an engagement without a hitch—Zuo Yi believed that if it were not for the fact that Ye Zhen Zhen was a student, Qin Kong would definitely have omitted this engagement step, taking her directly to the wedding temple.

Hao Zi couldn’t help but scoff. “Heng. No skill of his own, yet thinking all day of relying on his wife to flourish.”

Li Xin Ran thought for a moment and corrected, “Strictly speaking, charm is also considered to be a type of soft power.”1 Not every man had the qualifications to be called a pretty boy. At least, it was impossible for Hao Zi in his entire lifetime, so he understood his hate towards pretty boys.

Zuo Yi raised a brow. Qin Kong, this pretty boy, might not be particularly capable of turning his heart’s wishes to reality at the flick of a hand. Ye Zhen Zhen probably did not accepting his engagement on her own volition; it was because of Ye Hong Sheng’s pressure.

“But speaking of this, Ye Kang Ping and his wife also have homicidal motivations. Ye Hong Sheng gave all of his money to Ye Zhen Zhen. It is impossible that they do not have a bit of resentment in their hearts. They could kill Ye Hong Sheng and then shift the blame onto someone else—onto Ye Zhen Zhen. By making her lose her right of inheritance, they could walk away with the inheritance through legal inheritance order.” After Li Xin Ran listened to Zuo Yi’s analysis, he quickly deduced many things from this one revelation. “Moreover, the one to gain the most advantage, Ye Zhen Zhen, unexpectedly lost her memories. When all’s said and done, she herself doesn’t know if she is the murderer or not!”

Zuo Yi looked up, his frown morphing into a laugh. “That is a possibility, but this plan would only bear fruit under the condition that we will never find the culprit.”

“All murderers, when committing the act, think that the police are a group of blockheads and definitely would not be able to find them.” Li Xin Ran raised Qin Kong’s photograph and grinned at Zuo Yi. “He’s also the same. No matter how meticulous he planned it, as long as the investigation discovers him, all of his efforts will be for nothing.”

Zuo Yi looked at the male figure before him that was smiling like the sun’s rays, the corner of his mouth slowly rising into a smile as well. “Let me add a bit more clarification. The police officer is me; the blockhead is you.”

Li Xin Ran: “…”

Why did he dig a hole for himself to jump into? Earlier when they left for the hospital, they should’ve had Dr. Ji conveniently disinfect Leader.

Dr. Ji, however, no longer had free time nowadays.

In the dining room, the spasmodic sobbing that could just be heard suddenly stopped, the same smooth quickness as someone severing it with a knife.

A warm and soft sensation swept past her lips like a dragonfly lightly touching the water. What Ye Zhen Zhen felt just now might have simply been a figment of her imagination, because why would Dr. Ji suddenly kiss her?

Keywords: Dr. Ji, kiss, her.

It was like a firework explosion had ravaged Ye Zhen Zhen’s mind, leaving her dumbstruck.

Ji Zhe Yan was slightly embarrassed—no—he was very embarrassed. In his 26 years on this earth, he hadn’t even held a girl’s hand. He originally thought that he wouldn’t have any leap-like breakthrough in his upcoming 26th year as well, but just now, he…

His ears subtly reddened. He felt that he should explain his actions just now, but when he gazed at Ye Zhen Zhen, he was unable to say anything. Although Ye Zhen Zhen was no longer crying, her eyes were still full of tears, as if breathing a bit louder would cause them to fall.

The two of them stared at each other in this locked position. They could even hear each other’s heartbeat through the lack of distance.

Put—tong—. Pu—tong—.

Finally, Ji Zhe Yan pulled his gaze away first. “That, I’m sorry; just now, I simply wanted…to comfort you.”

Although this certainly was not the correct answer, it was definitely the most official, most standard answer.

Ye Zhen Zhen gradually returned to reality. Forcing the tears back, she gripped her skirt. “Do you normally comfort people like this?”

“…I normally don’t comfort people.” Ji Zhe Yan’s lips had already smoothed out into a straight line.

Ye Zhen Zhen looked expectantly at him. “Then can you comfort me again?”

……

“Eat, the food is getting cold.” Ji Zhe Yan stood up from the floor and smoothly bypassed the curved edge of the table to sit on the opposite side. Ye Zhen Zhen picked up her chopsticks in disappointment and continued to lightly push her food around in her bowl. Ji Zhe Yan continued to remain silent afterwards, systematically eating his food like a robot with set orders.

Ye Zhen Zhen glanced at him across the table, somewhat dissatisfied by that expressionless face. He had kissed her, so how come he was so unconcerned! At least…pouring his heart out to her would suffice!

She didn’t know that opposite her, he was profoundly reflecting upon himself.

He was definitely a normal man. He could use his integrity as a doctor to vouch for this point. It was just that there were some aspects where he was less impulsive about compared to an ordinary member of the male sex, nothing more—okay, he was a lot less impulsive.

Although, he didn’t agree that he was frigid.

So, in regards to the aspects that he lacked impulsiveness, why would he have the urge to act, to kiss… Ji Zhe Yan tried his best to find a title that fits Ye Zhen Zhen, but after switching from patient to friend to student, he still felt somewhat dissatisfied.

“Dr. Ji.” Ye Zhen Zhen had subconsciously finished all the food in her bowl. She set down her bowl and chopsticks before looking up at the expressionless man across from her.

Ji Zhe Yan’s train of thought broke. He glanced at Ye Zhen Zhen and also set down his bowl and chopsticks. “What’s the matter?”

Ye Zhen Zhen appeared to be a bit embarrassed. She lowered her gaze, a small smile gracing her face as she said, “Dr. Ji, thank you for believing in me. I don’t know why, but after you said this, I also felt that I am not a murderer. People say that pain in the heart requires heart medicine to cure. It seems Dr. Ji is precisely my heart medicine.”

Ye Zhen Zhen finished in one breath. In her heart, she couldn’t help but gasp in admiration. Ye Zhen Zhen, you did it! What you said was truly too wonderful; even your own self is moved!

Ji Zhe Yan also had similar thoughts.

He had come across countless female patients who declared their love to him, but these words he heard just now were the most touching words of love he had ever listened to.

Ye Zhen Zhen gazed at Ji Zhe Yan still, her eyes seemingly concealing anticipation. Ji Zhe Yan’s lips twitched. Just when he was about to say something, his phone rang.

He used the most basic of pre-installed ringtones, and the volume was similar to a decibel test—which had recently been adjusted.

“I apologize, I need to take the call.” Ji Zhe Yan stood up from his chair and left for the living room. “Hello. Mn, okay. I’ll leave immediately.”

Ye Zhen Zhen frowned, Dr. Ji had to leave?

Sure enough, after Ji Zhe Yan hung up the call, he apologetically looked at her. “I’m sorry; the hospital suddenly had an emergency patient. I need to leave immediately to perform surgery.”

Ye Zhen Zhen’s eyes darkened but very quickly regained its brightness. “Then quickly go! I’ll tidy here first before going home myself.” In her heart, she didn’t not feel disappointment, but she knew a doctor shouldered a responsibility for human life. This was a profession that deserved respect.

Ji Zhe Yan bowed his head to glance at her before turning around to grab his suit jacket hanging by the doorway. “You can just put the things over there. After I return, I’ll put it away. If you are tired, you can go lie down for a nap.”

He opened the door and left the moment he finished speaking, leaving Ye Zhen Zhen pleasantly surprised and astonished. He said she could take a nap? Sleeping…in Dr. Ji’s bed?

Her heart feeling as though it had been patted by kitten’s paws, Ye Zhen Zhen explored the place eagerly, thinking about which room was Dr. Ji’s bedroom. She wrapped up the leftover food on the table with cling film and placed it in the refrigerator. Afterward, she washed the bowls until they were shining before finally exploring the house.

Actually, it was very easy to confirm which room was the bedroom; Ye Zhen Zhen had got it right on her first try. Light blue curtains, warm white wardrobe, these were not the main points she focused on. She merely paid attention to…the bed large enough to hold three people.

The afternoon’s sunlight shimmered down at an angle onto the bed, steeping it with a warm aura. Feeling drowsy, Ye Zhen Zhen felt an urge to snuggle inside it, speculating that it must be very soft and very comfy.

Then she actually did. The bed brimmed with Dr. Ji’s scent. She buried her face into his pillow and sniffed, surmising that Dr. Ji regularly used some brand shampoo. Her heart swelled with happiness, pressing down the restlessness she had long accumulated internally. Although she clearly hadn’t taken her medicine, she was rapidly falling asleep.

Ji Zhe Yan spent five continuous hours on this surgery. After he returned home, the sky had already begun to darken. He flicked on the living room lights, a glance cataloguing the clean dining table. A warm feeling rushed forth from his heart, the exhaustion riddling his body vanishing in a split second like smoke in thin air.

He walked up to the dining table and saw that a note had been carefully pinned down by a cup. It was Ye Zhen Zhen’s writing on top.

『Dr. Ji, thank you for your hospitality. Your cooking is very delicious! I placed the leftovers into the refrigerator. You can warm it up when you return at night to eat~ ^_^』

Like last time, a Q-version chibi had been drawn on the slip of paper, but this time it wasn’t Dr. Ji—it was the authoress herself. Ji Zhe Yan stared at that rotund chibi and unexpectedly thought it was very…moe.

He smiled and placed the note together with the card he received last time. When he pushed open his bedroom door, however, he discovered that Ye Zhen Zhen was sleeping soundly in his bed.
