Chapter 24: Assault — How many points did you get?

Despite Ye Zhen Zhen having gone to Dr. Zhang twice more for hypnosis treatment afterwards, no clear results emerged. The face of the man in the suit was still hidden from her, inevitably making her somewhat impatient.

On the other side of the city, the police’s investigation had also come to a standstill. Li Xin Ran flipped through the files on the table, a little fidgety, before turning to face Zuo Yi. “Are you saying that chick Ye Zhen Zhen, in order to avoid suspicion, deliberately made up a man in a suit as a red herring?”

Being a businessman, Ye Kang Ping, normally wore suits for the most part, with black suits being his most common form of dress. Ye Zhen Zhen’s casual words had an 80% probability of having him shot even while lying down. 1

Zuo Yi gazed at the computer for a moment before slowly shaking his head. “I asked Dr. Zhang about her psychiatric treatment. He said the odds of her telling lies are extremely low. Furthermore…” He opened a still of Qin Kong. It was not very clear, as if the surveillance footage had been cut off. “Even though Qin Kong was wearing a light gray suit when he left A City, it doesn’t eliminate him as a suspect. He could’ve changed clothes after the murder.” After all, the victim’s blood surely would’ve splashed onto his clothes.

Li Xin Ran frowned. He had always felt that Leader seemed to be targeting Qin Kong. To him, it appeared that Ye Kang Ping and Ye Zhen Zhen were much more suspicious. However, Leader remained fixated upon Qin Kong, refusing to let go. Could it be that…it was because he was Ye Zhen Zhen’s fiancé?

Li Xin Ran, with such divergent connections, immediately felt he had reached a horrifying conclusion.

“What nonsense are you thinking about?” Zuo Yi tossed the video cassette to Li Xin Ran before leaning back against his chair, stretching. “Look through the surveillance again, try to see if there are any blind spots.”

Li Xin Ran choked out an affirmative and began to examine the videotape from the beginning for the nth time. He truly couldn’t understand—if the Ye Family was so wealthy, why weren’t there any surveillance cameras installed? Had that been the case, their investigation wouldn’t have ended up without a single trail of clues the way it had! In addition to the fact that there were no surveillance cameras, the Ye Mansion was also out of the way, and the crime had been discovered very late at night with no eyewitnesses. The case truly…brought him to tears.

Meanwhile, at school, Ye Zhen Zhen was also…brought to tears.

33 points; out of a total of 100 points for the English exam papers, she had only scored 33.

She was both mentally and physically exhausted.

“Zhen Zhen, how many points did you get?” Pei Cui Cui approached quietly, placing her 81 point exam paper on the table in the most eye-catching position.

Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”

How? How did Pei Cui Cui, who never attended class, score an 81? Could it be that this was the exam-type athlete spoken of in legends?

Right now, she could only remain silent.

“Haha, you actually got a 33. How did you pass Level 4?!” Pei Cui Cui began to dance with joy when she caught sight of Ye Zhen Zhen’s paper, as if she had discovered the New World.

Ye Zhen Zhen’s brows rose up. She had already passed her Level 4?

At long last, she saw a bit of hope.

She shoved the exam paper into her bag and left the classroom, gaze fixed ahead of her. Pei Cui Cui curled her lips at Ye Zhen Zhen’s departing figure and continued to be immeasurably pleased with herself.

She had yet to leave the school when Qin Kong called her. He had made very little attempts to find her ever since then, so Ye Zhen Zhen had nearly forgotten about his existence. She accepted the call, saying hello.

“Zhen Zhen, I heard you went for hypnosis treatment. How did it go? Did you remember anything?” Qin Kong’s voice passed through the phone, still as strong as before, yet a bit more gentle and cautious as he tried to sound her out.

Ye Zhen Zhen frowned and replied, “I saw a man in a black suit pushing me down the stairs.” She deliberately didn’t say that the crime scene should have had three people on site.

The call remained quiet on the other side. Ye Zhen Zhen could only hear the sound of Qin Kong’s breathing. After a pregnant pause, he asked another question. “Then did you clearly see who that person was?”

“No.” She heard the person on the other side sigh in relief once she had said this, but of course, it could have simply been her own wishful thinking.

“It doesn’t matter. Since you can already recall a black suit, soon, you’ll be able to recall everything else.” Qin Kong’s voice had softened with his consoling words.

Ye Zhen Zhen only hummed and was about to hang up when she heard Qin Kong say, “Are you free tonight? Let’s go out and eat.”

Ye Zhen Zhen pretended to think about it for a moment before refusing. “I’m sorry, I have a date with someone today; I’ll treat you some other day.”

Although Qin Kong fell silent for a moment, he also didn’t pester her again, instead telling her to pay attention to her health before immediately hanging up.

When Ye Zhen Zhen heard the dial tone, she couldn’t help but wrinkle her brows. Qin Kong calling like this was simply to confirm if I had recalled anything.

Could the man in the black suit have been Qin Kong?

She sighed and returned her phone to her bag, climbing into Uncle Wu’s car to head to Central Hospital. She hadn’t lied; she really did have a date—a date with Dr. Ji.

Although she didn’t need to go to the hospital for a doctor’s visit, Dr. Ji accompanied her to her appointment with Dr. Zhang every week. Ye Zhen Zhen once again used this as an excuse to ask Dr. Ji out for a meal.

She glanced at the time. It wasn’t 3:30PM yet. Dr. Ji still had an hour until he got off work. With time to kill, she once again headed to a book cafe to read.

This time, however, she opened an English book.

She persisted with this for five minutes before she decisively gave up. Those people who scored an 80 in English, did you learn your own mother language well? How deep and diverse is your understanding of Chinese culture? Rushing to revere everything foreign and pander to overseas powers, truly…bitter and hateful!

Ye Zhen Zhen internally concerned herself with her country and her people while she exchanged her book for a romance novel.

An hour later, she punctually arrived in front of the hospital entrance and eagerly waited for Dr. Ji to get off work. She felt that she was simply a good wife and loving mother.

Ye Zhen Zhen had made a reservation at a famous Western restaurant in A City for them, where she  spent an enjoyable candle-lit dinner with Dr. Ji. As dinner came to a close, Ye Zhen Zhen’s eyes flashed as her hand rapidly pulled out her purse in advance. This time, she absolutely must not let Dr. Ji win!

Her fight to pull out her purse was very successful, but there was a small mishap—her 33 point exam paper was pulled out as well by her ferocious movements.

Ji Zhe Yan glanced down at the small, crumpled up piece of paper that had tumbled down next to his leg and stooped down to pick it up. Ye Zhen Zhen’s ‘I got it!’ hadn’t even left her mouth before Ji Zhe Yan smoothed out the piece of paper.

The two eye-shocking, heart-stopping numbers stunned the always, until now, calm and collected Dr. Ji.

……

Ye Zhen Zhen wanted to die.

She snatched the exam paper from Ji Zhe Yan’s hands, ashamed and resentful as she stuffed it back into her bag. Ji Zhe Yan stared at her red-faced profile and her faintly pursing his lips. “Mn…if you fail English, you might not graduate.”

Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”

Could Dr. Ji not stab her with his words like this? Shouldn’t he gently and softly comfort her with an ‘It doesn’t matter, English can go to hell?’ Shouldn’t he?

Ye Zhen Zhen’s grievances flowed like rivers within her heart.

“If needed, I can find the time to tutor you in English.”

Ye Zhen Zhen’s eyes brightened. Dr. Ji really was a little angel. “Very needed! Thank you, Dr. Ji! Let’s begin tonight!”

Ji Zhe Yan: “…”

It was his first time seeing such an eager-to-learn student, truly a bit touching.

“We can start after I go home and make plans.” English was divided into many parts, so he needed to do a bit of research first to draw up the most reasonable plan. “Give me your exam paper. I’ll take a look at  the types of questions on your exam.”

Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”

This simply felt like shame play.

Ji Zhe Yan saw her shy behavior and stillness and comfortingly said, “It’s fine. I already know you scored 33 points.”

Ye Zhen Zhen: “…”

But you don’t know my mistakes are…creative.

The sky had already darkened somewhat when they left the Western restaurant. Ye Zhen Zhen and Dr. Ji strolled everywhere, the aura clinging to them truly reminiscence of young sweethearts. She originally thought about asking Dr. Ji out to see a movie, but she had decided to drop the idea since there were no recent blockbuster movies showing.

When there was a blockbuster movie showing, though, she would have grounds to ask out Dr. Ji!

Ye Zhen Zhen had all this beautifully planned in her mind, but Ji Zhe Yan suddenly stopped walking. “It’s getting late. You should head back first and rest earlier.” He hadn’t forgotten that the Ye Mansion was very far from downtown.

Ye Zhen Zhen pouted. Although she was a bit unwilling, she still nodded in agreement. She called her chauffeur and parted ways with Ji Zhe Yan. Ji Zhe Yan had originally wanted to wait for the chauffeur to come before leaving, but he had got a call about a patient’s condition suddenly changing and had no choice but to rush back.

Ye Zhen Zhen sat alone on a street bench. Far into the distance, she could see a pair of young lovers. Her lips curled as she walked into an alleyway towards a milk tea shop. There weren’t very many people here, and the streetlights were also dim. Ye Zhen Zhen subconsciously quickened her steps.

Behind her came the sound of faint footsteps. Ye Zhen Zhen frowned as she saw an elongated shadow approach her from the side. She considered running into the milk tea shop, but her mouth was suddenly covered. The other party’s strength was greater than hers; she simply couldn’t struggle free. In a moment of desperation, she raised her leg and ruthlessly stomped on her assailant’s foot.

She mentally rejoiced that she had had the foresight and luck to have deliberately worn high heels for her date with Dr. Ji today.

The other party was clearly in agony; his strength was now weakened enough for Ye Zhen Zhen to fish out her can of pepper spray from her bag with lightning speed. The mist must have hit the other’s eyes, seeing as he released her and ran away in a panic.

The noise had alarmed the milk tea shop’s owner, and she had ran out in time to see Ye Zhen Zhen’s exhausted tumble to the ground. She immediately called the police.

Zuo Yi came faster than 110.2 Ye Zhen Zhen held a cup of warm milk tea as she sat in the shop, her hair somewhat a mess and her appearance shaken in her panicked state. He walked up and sat down beside her. “Are you okay?”

Ye Zhen Zhen shook her head and pushed something in front of her over to him.

It was a taser.

Zuo Yi frowned. “You found this at the scene?”

“Mn.” Ye Zhen Zhen nodded. “He must’ve dropped it.” Ye Zhen Zhen had thought over what happened. At that time, the other party must have taken out the taser and intended to electrocute her. When she had sprayed him with pepper spray, however, he must have dropped the taser in pain.

Zuo Yi sought out the shop owner to request a plastic bag. He very carefully placed the taser inside. “So, tell me exactly what happened.”

  1. Idiom meaning, in this context, that it nailed him as the culprit
  2. 110 is the line for the police in China. Chestnut is saying that Zuo Yi came faster than the actual police
