Chapter 1 – Rebirth

Birth is suffering, dying is suffering, separation from what is dear is suffering, encountering what is not dear is suffering, and not getting what one wants is suffering. There are eight kinds of suffering in Buddhism, but Nie Yan had five of them. His life was a history of suffering. Fortunately he had a short life of only 28 years old.

His life should have ended in that moment but fate had something different stored for him.

Nie Yan rolled over, he could feel his shirt being uncomfortably wet and sticky – he vaguely remembered the bullet piercing his chest, him falling down and blood seeping out.

What is death, Nie Yan was calm, just quietly dying, would also be a relief.

He had been lying in ambush for Cao Xu for five days, after waiting for so long, finally when Cao Xu came out to board his car he aligned his shot and pulled the trigger of his sniper rifle – bang bang, when he looked through the telescopic sight he could see a hole in Cao Xu’s head and blood splattered all over.

Cao Xu eyes were vacant and gradually grew lax and lost focus.

The moment the bullet hit Cao Xu played back in Nie Yan’s mind, a feeling of joy and sense of catharsis spread through him.

Cao Xu despite having a fortune died at hand of an unimportant person like Nie Yan. Cao Xu couldn’t do anything but resign himself to die, could he? In front of death, everyone was the same, even if the enemy was wealthy; all the riches cannot save his life.

If you commit too many evil deeds, then it is hard to escape retribution.

At the moment when bullet pierced Cao Xu’s head, Nie Yan discovered his own philosophy of life underwent a change. Before that all he wanted to do was to shoot him. Tomorrow morning, his photo may be published on the front page. Above it will be written, the richest man Cao Xu was killed, and then put the last of the big close-up of him so that the world could pay respect.

After Nie Yan shot to kill Cao Xu, his bodyguard discovered him, tracked and shot him in the back.

Nie Yan could feel stabbing pain, this was from the bullet wound, he gradually feeling numb and could feel the vitality seeping away.

He was dying but he laughed – laughed at his short bitter life. He had muddled along all his life but at the end of it had come to his senses.

He burst into tears.

His past life, before his parent’s vendetta, ran through his mind like a movie reel, his sole concern had been to make sure that she always smiled.

She being Nie Yan’s high school classmate, now a married woman, but her beautiful face was engraved in Nie Yan’s heart. With the passage of time she was carved in bones and engraved in his heart. He wondered if she saw Nie Yan and Cao Xu’s news what her reaction would be, would she just sigh or would she burst into tears.

His past memories flooded his mind; by the time he realized it was too late. In this life, he had too many regrets, too many unfulfilled desire.

Nie Yan reached out, trying to hold only to find that everything was fading away and life had come to an end and everything was enveloped in darkness.

Regret and frustration cut through his heart like a dagger and it was unbearable.

What wrongs did I commit in my previous life that God was punishing and torturing me in such way?

Resentment flooded him, unwilling he cried and tears rolled down.

In time, he didn’t realize how much time had passed but Nie Yan’s mind calmed down.

His mind was still active, but his brain was thinking could this be death perhaps this is my soul.

For a long time now, Nie Yan fingers had felt a sense of touch, moreover it felt so real. After such a long duration of time why he was still conscious, suddenly he sat up, looked around bewildered.

Is this hell?

Nie Yan’s hazy view slowly cleared, taking a look around, he saw some old items, wooden bed, chair, damaged floor.

What is this place? I’m not dead yet?

Suddenly as if in a dream, an unreal feeling, he touched his back, his hands were wet, but when he looked down at his palms there was no blood but only sweat. The back of his shirt was soaked in sweat, and were wet.

What was going on?

There was no blood; he vaguely remembered blood, bright scarlet red wine spreading across, and the color of life seeping away.

Nie Yan pinched himself and felt pain, this was not a dream. Didn’t he assassinate Cao Xu or was that a dream?

Why was this so real?

He felt like Zhuangzi wondering if he was a man who dreamed of being a butterfly or a butterfly dreaming of being a man.

What was real and what was dream?

He looked around confused; there are too many things he didn’t understand.

Dim light, old wooden bed, desk, chair, on the wall was an antique wall clock, ticking loudly, Nie Yan remembered, it’s time not accurate.

Memories like an old photo album slowly opened up.

The environment here was so familiar, was this not the house where he lived while he was in high school?

The sun shined through the gap in the curtain and pupils constricted from the pain, to give him a dazzling sense of reality.

I’m still alive, Nie Yan thought holding up his slightly puerile hands, they were sickly pale.

“I – what’s going on? Is this actually me of ten years ago, or after ten years of me?” Nie Yan scratched his head, extremely distressed.

He managed to put his thought process in order and gradually fragments of memory cleared up.

This was the time when he was 18 years old, sophomore year summer vacation, parents were not at home. He had forty degrees fever and nearly died, luckily he had a narrow escape.

During that time his parents had given him some money and left. They didn’t come back for two to three months, he couldn’t reach them through phone, and they had cut all communications. He thought his parents didn’t want him, horror, fear, all sort of emotional stress and high fever had left a deep psychological impact on him leading him to become timid personality. The timid personality had undergone a change only at the age of twenty-five.

Later when he grew up he came to know It was not that his parents did not want him but they had borrowed money from friends and relatives to do some smuggling business across the border. At that time the country urgently needed a type of metal called polonium, a significant strategic material. Countries across the world found the importance of this material and quickly tightened the export and started hoarding the same. Nie Yan’s parents knew a way to gather this material and smuggled it into the country. The polonium was then bought by the country at hundred times the rate and thus earning his parents a large sum.

During that time the situation was very tense, Nie Yan’s parents were unable to call him, and furthermore it was a military secret, if leaked, can lead to fatal disaster. This caused misunderstanding between them which wasn’t cleared until many years later when his father told him the actual facts, Nie Yan could only forgive them.

This was the year when his father hit his first pot of gold, and opened a smelting company and made several major deals. The enterprise grew by leaps and bounds solving all their family’s difficulties. Nie Yan was also transferred to an exclusive school in the city.

Did I really return to that time?

Can I really make a fresh start?

Pleasant surprise and apprehension intertwined leaving Nie Yan in indescribable frame of mind. Only one thought reigned supreme and he was worried that everything was just a dream.

Nie Yan got out of bed, opened the curtains. Feeling the blaze of the sun liberated him. The warmth truly told him that this was not a dream.

When he looked down, he saw his textbooks neatly arranged on the window sill, mechanical theory, automation theory, literature and language, advanced mathematics and Smart program language, etc.

Nie Yan opened the book, the words were familiar similar to a breath of spring associated with his earlier memories, stirring his soul, these books represented his youth. In his third year he transferred to an elite school in the city. His father’s business had succeeded leading to a lavish lifestyle. He was now son of a wealthy man leading him to lazy mentality, his performance suffered after third year. His father spent a lot of money to get him into prestigious college but still he did not pursue the path of learning till the end, whiling away his time.

At the age of twenty-five, father’s Business Consortium suffered takeover threats, father’s trusted friends and relatives betrayed him to Cao Xu. Company suffered a series of setback and the family was in dire straits again. His father committed suicide and his mother worried herself into early death. After losing his parents, Nie Yan improved himself, did a lot of self-study but by then it was too late.

Nie Yan had worked hard, filled with expectation to fight for his piece of world, but how could Cao Xu‘s enemy’s son make a comeback? Due to Cao Xu’s influence, no one dared to hire Nie Yan, pushing him in an impossible position. If not for the Xinyang Online a virtual game Nie Yan played, there wouldn’t have been even a modest income for his meals.

Left with no hope to defeat Cao Xu with legitimate means, the anxious rabbit decided to bite back. Finding no way out Nie Yan chose to perish together with Cao Xu.

That gunshot drained his resentment.

The way of heaven manifested, Cao Xu Wouldn’t have imagined this outcome.

Nie Yan thought he was dead, but unexpectedly, time played a joke, he returned to the sophomore year summer vacation.

While he couldn’t contact his parents but Nie Yan was sure that they were still alive, thinking of this his eyes were wet with tears.

The former incarnation’s hearts desire for his parents – the sorrow Nie Yan was feeling other people won’t understand.

God gave him a second chance; he would never wander aimlessly again.

His parents would be back after twenty days and till he had to stay alone.

He remembered that Xinyang Online, the virtual reality game had started in the second half of the semester of his sophomore year, not long ago. “Nie Yan clearly remembered, the year that Xinyang opened, many business consortium entered the happening scene of Xinyang. Consortium’s huge injection of funds led to a large-scale development of Xinyang. Invariably Xinyang seriously turned into the second world for mankind.

He had joined Xinyang when he was introduced to it by a friend in the elite school after a semester had already passed. Till then many people had high levels, and he missed the best time of leveling and he was left desperately trying to catch up.

Memories, like pages were being recolored with rich hues, the time he spent in the game was the most memorable in his life, he made a lot of friends. Life was not as lonely and not as senseless it could have been.

Before shooting Cao Xu, Nie Yan was one hundred and eighty high level thief, though not really at the top, but he was barely counted amongst the masters.

Nie Yan suddenly remembered the ATM card in the drawer, it had all his savings.

There should be enough money to buy a helmet. Thought Nie Yan and pulled open the drawer, searched through it, he finally found the silver card in the corner. If he was not wrong there should be 2000 credit points on his card. 1 credit point was 1 dollar. He had saved this money by living frugally because he wanted to buy X3, the most advanced computer but before he could save enough money for it, X3 had become obsolete. Later, when his father’s enterprise had succeeded, his allowance had been more than this. His father wanted to make up for the past; he nearly acceded to Nie Yan’s every request. Nie Yan could basically buy whatever he wanted.

Nie Yan was 18-year old but had a soul of 28-year, everything start again, he could re-write his life’s chapter. Since he didn’t have sufficient capital, he couldn’t do anything. From his previous experience he knew those who played the game from the start were better placed and becoming a professional gamer would help him earn money very easily.

When Xinyang game helmet first went on sale, in order to popularize the game the helmets were priced very cheaply. There were three types of helmets, A, B and C with different type of configuration of virtual reality ranging from 76% – 98%. The cheapest C type of helmet was priced at 1300 credits. Nie Yan had more than enough savings to buy the cheapest type of helmet.

He remembered many things of the game quite vividly if he starts playing now it wouldn’t be difficult to make a break through.

Putting the ATM card in his pocket, Nie Yan’s eyes landed on his advanced mathematics textbook, as if God’s will, he picked and shook the book, a new hundred Yuan note fell down, earlier memories of some things have come back to him.

Suddenly he was reminded that he met Xie Yao for the first time today because he took out the 100 Yuan to buy medicine from pharmacy.

Xie Yao was his desk mate in senior year, as well as the prettiest girl in the class, once he couldn’t bear to remember that period of time, shook himself out of the melancholy. Ten years later Xie Yao fell in love with Liu Rui, a scholar from their class and they moved to Moon. He had been in touch Xie Yao over phone only then he discovered that she was unhappy. Only when she talked about high school she seemed spirited otherwise she sounded low.

If he had been brave in front of Xie Yao at that time and not with this inferiority complex and cowardice perhaps he wouldn’t have missed the opportunity.

There are times in life when some decisions cause irreversible regret.

At that time Xie Yao liked to wear white dress, beautiful and pure, her appearance had been deeply engraved in Nie Yan’s heart, those kinds of melancholic thoughts flitted through his mind like sound of flute sounded in dusk distant and serene.

Nie Yan looked at the old clock, the time was three o’clock, and he still had enough time. He picked up the note, and ran downstairs.

They lived in the suburbs, bleak, dilapidated narrow roads, the wind blew and the dust flew. A lot of lush green trees were planted on both sides of the road which provided shade from the blazing sun.

The weather in the afternoon was hot hence there were no pedestrians, only few cars and occasionally one or two hover car could be seen.

In previous life Nie Yan hated this city, on the contrary seeing this desolate place after his rebirth he did not feel loathing but unexpectedly felt warm, this is where he had spent 18 years of his life.

Nie Yan’s timid disposition of twenty-five years was related to living circumstances.  A boy from small city transferred to city’s elite schools because his family suddenly became rich. He had exceptional grades for sophomore originally but over there he was considered to be at the bottom, his dressing taste was ridiculed and on top of that things had happened over summer which left him with a sense of insecurity and left a huge psychological impact. The new environment, his inferiority complex, everything felt out of place, if not for few good friends he had made he might have suffered a nervous breakdown.

Nie Yan didn’t expect that he would return back to square one of his previous incarnation.

He ran all the way to the drugstore.

The neighborhood buildings were somewhat shabby, sparsely populated. With accelerated urbanization, people from small town were relocating to metro cities. The population of small town was declining, another hundred years and this town will be demolished and turned into field.

“That is a school and this was the supermarket. “Being back in his familiar surrounding his frame of mind gradually became cheerful.

Earlier he used to resent the unjust hand fate had dealt him but now he was really grateful to God.

I want to start afresh! I’ll live properly! Nie Yan was unable to stop himself from shouting out, letting out his excitement.
