Chapter 24 The useless blood magic

Vivian couldn’t believe it. She squeezed another drop of blood and dropped it onto Hao Ren’s hand. Then the two of them stared to see what would happen – Lilly also watched it curiously. The drop of blood was tinged with a golden-reddish glow. It moved on Hao Ren’s skin for quite a while, and after a few seconds, it shrunk rapidly, like a drop of water touching a soldering iron, and disappeared in front of their eyes.

“Seems like it’s absorbed,” Hao Ren curiously scratched the back of his hand. Honestly speaking, seeing the drop of blood creeping on his skin like a living thing was really shocking. If he hadn’t known that Vivian held no malice towards him, he would have wanted to get rid of that stuff without a second thought. And although he didn’t pay attention the disappearing the first time, this time he clearly saw the scary process. “I have no much feeling, though it was a little cold and ticklish at the beginning.”

“We Blood Tribe’s body temperature is a little lower than you humans’, so that’s normal,” Vivian hesitantly looked at her finger, while the wound she’d bit open had healed to a dot which was almost invisible, and then she clenched her teeth as if making a difficult decision, before she squeezed out a final drop, “Well… This is the last try. If this still doesn’t work, I will just give up; I don’t want to waste anymore.”

Lily took the opportunity to taunt her and replied, “Look at your stingy appearance, it’s just a drop of blood.”

“It doesn’t matter even if it’s just one drop a blood! One drop of blood is also blood!” Vivian was outraged, “Back when I still hadn’t adapted to human food, I still fed on blood. And I was so unfortunate that almost every time I preyed, I would be watched by witchers, and I didn’t have the money to afford raising my own blood servant. During my poorest period, I was reluctant to let out a single drop in my ‘periods’, and you know, you have not experienced storms and rains, and when the dire straits come…”

Hao Ren really couldn’t bear to listen to her pathetic past experiences, and smoothed things over before things got out of control: “Well, well, let’s stop talking about the past, and Vivian you should pay attention — this novel is in CERO-A 1 — and you shouldn’t detail your miserable life, I have a kind heart and I can’t bear to keep listening…”

Lily suddenly cheered up: “Then, landlord, could you spare me one month’s rent?”

“…… I’m talking to Vivian, what does it have to do with you..?”

After the conversation, at least Vivian still remembered to get down to business: She started the test again, but this time she muttered an old spell in a strange tone as she spread her blood on Hao Ren’s hand. Hao Ren felt the cold air and smelled the scent of blood again, but the blood on his hand behaved the same as before, as it only moved for a few seconds before disappearing within the blink of an eye.

“My contact with the blood was also interrupted,” Vivian frowned, “Never before has such a situation occurred, as there is a fixed link between the Blood Tribe and their own blood. Unless we ‘abandon’ the part of our blood of our own accord, the link should not be interrupted.”

“So what should we do now?” Hao Ren scratched his face, “I’m counting on your blood to ward off the evil.”

“Should we try Lily’s blood?” Vivian turned to look at the werewolf, “Her blood should also be able to ward off evil.”

“Ah? Werewolf too?” Lily was even more surprised, “I can do that kind of thing too?!”

Vivian smiled weirdly: “No, but I heard from an old Chinese saying that, the blood of the black dog can ward off the evil …”

Then the two super women began tearing in the living room again. Hao Ren didn’t feel like stopping the two, nor did he have the power to stop them. He sat on the sofa in a daze, watching a vampire and a werewolf jumping around in front of him, and when he finally couldn’t bear it anymore, he just shouted, “Oy, be careful. Who breaks it, who buys it – Lily, haven’t you already owed me a tea set? And Vivian, think about your wallet…”

This words had a significant effect, as both super women went quiet immediately, and switched to Rock Paper Scissors to have their showdown instead…

Hao Ren looked down at his normal hands, and wondered why they could absorb the vampire’s blood. As far as he knew from movies and novels, the blood of a vampire was too powerful for the average person, and the move like just touching it could dissolve the meat and bones of humans… But in his case, nothing special happened, not even comparable to the normal blood –  It was just absorbed directly. Although Hao Ren was now pretty sure that the description of vampires in movies and novels were mostly unreliable, the theory “The blood of the Blood Tribe has special powers” couldn’t be wrong. At the very least, human blood would neither tremble nor crawl around by itself…

“It seems that the Blood Tribe’s Imprint isn’t working.” Said Vivian, as she finally got down to business after playing with Lily. She looked Hao Ren up and down, and still refused to give up. “If you trust me, I could try the spells of the Blood Tribe. As I am a superior Blood Tribesman, I can cast spells even without using blood as a medium — And if there’s no medium, there is nothing to be absorbed.”

Ren Hao gave a short burst of laughter, “Why not? You can try it if you want to.”

“Most people really don’t trust us,” Vivian threw up her hands, “People as agreeable as you are actually the minority. Unless the guy is soft-headed, how could he just cheerfully accept the spell? Three hundred years ago, those European guys resisted my Blood Spell to the extent that they would rather die, I don’t know why they were so rigid.”

Hao Ren muttered to himself: Has this vampire girl been getting along with humans for so long that, she had forgotten how normal vampires used spells on humans?

Vivian had Hao Ren sit still, and then outlined some weird and twisted characters in the air, and Hao Ren stared at all these, as it was the first time that Hao Ren saw a real so-called “Spell” kind of thing, and his excitement was obvious. It really broadened Hao Ren’s horizon to see someone drawing trails shimmering with faint blood in thin air, though he quickly felt it become boring.

Vivian just kept writing in the air line by line, and while writing she also waved away what she had written. The process was just a high-end recital,  and with the exception of the the drawing of texts with bloody effect 2 … He felt no special powers or spectacular phenomena.

At the same time, Vivian slightly wrinkled her brows as she started writing faster and faster, and more frequently waved away what she had written, to the extent that she erased lines almost as quickly as she wrote them.  Hao Ren felt that it must have reached the critical stage in spelling, so initially he dared not say anything… But then, after a long time, he didn’t feel anything happening, he couldn’t help but whisper, “Well… isn’t it ready?”

“Wait, I’m probably wrong, and I’m correcting it…”

Hao Ren: “…”

So this guy kept erasing lines because she was wrong! Couldn’t the vampire girl be more reliable?

“Quite abnormal.” Vivian didn’t notice the subtle expression on Hao Ren’s face, and after she changed the spell several times, she finally stopped, shaking her head in confusion as she spoke, “It doesn’t make sense that this can be wrong… I’ve tried three effective formats of spells, and there’s still no response at all… Landlord do you feel particularly sleepy? Or do you feel particularly calm? Or wholly relaxed? ”

“Well, no,” Hao Ren stretched his arms, “My mind is pretty peaceful, but I don’t think that has anything to do with your sentences.”

“That big dog over there,” Vivian turned to Lily, “Don’t move.”

As she finished speaking, Vivian waved the bloody text into a quivering mist that drifted over to Lily, who immediately lay prone on the table, snoring soundly.

“… The effect is much stronger than my estimation: How low is this guy’s resistance to it?” Vivian frowned, and then looked at Hao Ren, “I don’t know why, but my blood spell doesn’t seem to work on you.”

Hearing this, Hao Ren was suddenly excited, and looked at his hands in shock, “Am I actually a very powerful man? Is it my hidden ‘setting’ that I’m spell-free?!?”

Vivian was quite honest: “There is also a chance that you mind was too slow. For instance, fools are immune to all confusion-type spells…”

Hao Ren: “Cough, cough, you know that you still owe me money, right?”

Vivian stuck out her tongue playfully, “Well, just kidding. But you being innately spell-free is probably not possible, as I am very sensitive to creatures, and you should simply be a normal man. Besides, you are not immune to the cool air I made. Maybe you should ask the Raven12345 for specific reasons… I always thought that your contract with the so-called God was not so simple, and there are chances that after you came back, there have been some minor changes on you. As for now … maybe you should still just use my amulet.”

In the end, they still had to go with the original proposal: Things like magic blood and spells were proved useless, and Hao Ren received a spell-warding talisman from the vampire: a so-called “Bagua”3 Disk gotten from the Wutai Mountain , which was said to be able to ward off evil and calm your mind…

When Vivian handed the Disk to Hao Ren, she warned him countless times, in fear that her cherished treasure was damaged, and he could see that the weird vampire girl really valued her own pile of talismen, which made Hao Ren feel particularly moved.

But would that stuff really work?
