“I hope you can give me an explanation for this,” Nian Xi said. While this was not the first time she had a brush with death, the horrifying feeling of weightlessness that she experienced when the lift plunged was too scary.
“Rest assured that we will.”
Nian Junting arrived half an hour later. When he stepped into the room, the General Manager had yet to leave, and the atmosphere was very solemn and stifling.
“Brother…” Nian Xi greeted him first, and she sounded quite relaxed.
She had caused her family members to worry about her because of her recent injury. As she did not want them to worry about her even more, she said, “You didn’t inform Dad and Mom, did you? It’s just a minor incident. Besides, I’m fine now.”
“A minor incident?” A fleeting, cold, and sharp look flashed in Nian Junting’s eyes. “So it’s only a minor incident that your elevator plunged from the 11th story to the second story? You could have been smashed to pieces if it had plunged another two stories down!”
“I’m… I’m sorry, Brother. I didn’t take good care of… Xixi.” Jiang Yuning abruptly stood up and clenched his fists in guilt. “I shouldn’t have brought Xixi out to the Botanical Garden. We should have headed home straight away after the follow-up appointment.”
Nian Junting felt a mix of emotions as he glanced at Jiang Yuning. Ever since Lu Kang looked into Jiang Yuning’s past, Nian Junting could no longer bring himself to flare up at Jiang Yuning. On the contrary, he even felt a hint of admiration for him. “Forget it. You were also trapped in the elevator. We can’t pinpoint such a matter on anyone. Nobody can be blamed for it,” he said.
Nian Xi looked at her brother with a raised eyebrow. She had initially expected her brother to unreasonably get angry at Jiang Yuning. “Brother, you’re much more magnanimous and reasonable now,” she remarked.
“Since when have I not been magnanimous and reasonable?” Nian Junting said as he glared at her crossly. “Are the two of you alright?”
“I’m fine,” Nian Xi said and nodded her head.
However, Jiang Yuning merely pursed his lips in silence with a troubled expression.
Five minutes later, the elevator repairman came out and explained uneasily, “I checked through the elevator once just now. It seems like there’s a fault with the inverter. The fault lasted for around two seconds, and it was quickly restored subsequently.”
“Two seconds?” Nian Junting narrowed his eyes. “When you’re in an elevator, one second of malfunctioning alone can be fatal. Not to mention two seconds! It’s practically a miracle to be alive. How do you guys usually conduct your maintenance?”
The repairman replied glumly, “I just conducted maintenance on it three days ago, and there was nothing wrong with the elevator at all at that time. I also don’t understand why such a thing could happen so abruptly. Besides, this elevator has been in service for seven years, and this is the first time that it has malfunctioned like this.”
Nian Junting remained silent for a moment. Back then, this was one of the fancier, high-end neighborhoods in Xia City. Nian Junting had studied the fire safety measures and the quality of things like the elevator and the property before buying the apartment.
“CEO Nian, I’ll relay this to the manufacturer of the elevator,” the Property Management Manager continued. “I’ll get the manufacturer to come and inspect this personally. It’s best not to use this elevator for the time being. I’m very sorry about today’s incident. We can waive two years’ worth of property management fees for Miss Nian. Alternatively, we can also offer compensation for the emotional distress caused.”
“Sure.” Nian Junting nodded his head as he sent the property management staff out.
When they reached the door, Nian Junting then gestured to the General Manager to move in closer before speaking into his ear, “Could you investigate if anyone did something to this elevator before the incident happened, or if anyone suspicious appeared in the neighborhood?”
The General Manager was stunned for a moment, but he hastily nodded his head in agreement.
When Nian Junting returned to the house, he immediately ordered, “Pack up. You’ll stay at my place for the time being.”
Nian Xi frowned and replied, “I don’t want to. We’re pretty fine with staying here. The property management team will pay closer attention to the elevator from now on, so problems like these won’t happen again. If you’re still worried, I’ll use the stairs.”
