Chapter 104 Part 1

Chapter 104: We Will Bear Witness to History and Do Nothing

The emperor who led the invading army was killed by the Duke of Nuremberg, just as we had predicted.

Peter was the first to get the report, whereupon he stationed almost the entire army on the outskirts of the Imperial City entered the city.

The purpose was to forcibly seize power before the emperor’s death caused widespread confusion.

Although it was almost a coup d’état with no legal basis, the emperor’s death meant that there was a power opening.

The parliament, where half of the members had died or been replaced in the Civil War, was slow in its movements, and the Duke of Nuremberg’s army would be closing in on the Imperial City while they would bide time to choose an emperor.

Since it was an emergency, Peter would start to get the situation under control.

He tried to enter the Imperial City as soon as possible but was stopped by the gatekeepers.

This was because the current Imperial City was ordered to not allow anyone to enter at night due to the deteriorating security situation.

“No. We can’t open the gates at night!”

“It’s an emergency.”

“Your Highness, no matter how urgent the situation is…” The gatekeepers who were defending the gates refused to let him in.

They are soldiers as well as officials, so they are loyal to orders from above.

No matter how much Peter asked they would not open the gates so easily.

No one wants to be punished for opening the gates.

“Are you going to force your way through?”

“That would embarrass the guards. I’ve taken care of it,” Peter states confidently as we wait.

A soldier with higher authority appeared from behind the gate.

“Open the gate and let His Highness in.”

“Beuerlein, are you sure about this?”

“I’ll take care of this. So just let him in.”

“Yes, understood.”

The gatekeeper reluctantly opened the door of the gate at the order of Beuerlein, a military man.

A characteristic of soldiers and officials is obeying orders from above.

It is also significant that the person called Beuerlein declared that he would assume responsibility.

“Well, Your Highness, shall we go now?”

“I’m going to the Imperial City first. I’ll leave the control of the Imperial Headquarters to the quasi-baron Bohnhoff.”

“To me?” Gilbert is a little confused by the sudden appointment.

What’s more, he was treated as a mercenary in my employ, so it’s strange in terms of command.

“It’s an emergency. I’ve also been eyeing Baron Bohnhoff as a potential recruit for a while. Wendelin had gone ahead and hired you at a high salary, though. Really rich.”

“The emperor forced me to do strange jobs with him for compensation.”

“We couldn’t take you in a few months ago, and we don’t have much money even now. But now we can appoint you, Baron Bohnhoff as Supreme Commander of the Imperial Army.”

“I am the Supreme Commander…Your Highness, is this some kind of joke?”

“Huh? No?”

“I am indebted to Count Baumeister for entrusting me with the training and command of an army of over 20,000 men for the past few months. But I have retired from the army.”

From Gilbert’s point of view, it was probably not very pleasant to be with the Imperial Army.

He responded to Peter’s invitation with a cold negative tone.

In short, he wanted to refuse.

“I would like to entrust a commander of great strength to intercept the Duke of Nuremberg’s forces from now on.”

“A quasi-baron Supreme Commander is unheard of,” Gilbert said.

I think he dared to indicate that even if he became Supreme Commander, he would be rebuffed by other soldiers who were proud of their families and the army would not have a unified command.

“It’s an emergency…”

“There are no factions, no families, no emergencies.”

Gilbert’s sarcasm is actually quite accurate.

In wartime, countries that are able to have a flexible personnel system based on ability often win, but in times of peace, a seniority-based, family-centered personnel system that doesn’t make waves is often prevalent.

The empire was peaceful for a while, so Gilbert, who has a low family background, resigned from the Imperial army, and took over the territory.

He doesn’t expect the trend to change so easily.

“I’ll leave all the military formations to you. Besides, those who followed the emperor with family pride are either dead or ran away, so I promise they won’t interfere with your command.”

“Yes. If they are dead, it won’t be that hard, and if they escape, they will be let off without charges.”

If it’s the former, it will take time for the family to receive their inheritance and if it’s the latter, there’s no way they can command the reorganized army because of the dismissal and demotion of his position.

The non-majority faction and my comrades have no objection to Baron Bohnhoff’s right to command the reorganized Imperial Army.

“I agree with Your Highness. I may be able to move the army, but the Supreme Commander position is not for me. Senior should return,” Beuerlein cut in.

“Beuerlein…”

Apparently Beuerlein and Gilbert were acquainted with each other.

Since they both belonged to or were affiliated with the Imperial Army, it wasn’t surprising.

“Damien, Armin, Georg too. They are all willing to follow the command of their senior.”

“But you see…” Gilbert was looking at me.

He’s probably wondering what I, as his current employer, would think.

“I can’t keep this army of twenty thousand people forever. I’m going to return to my kingdom once the civil war is over. Please feel free to take the job.”

Once this civil war is over, my employee status as Gilbert’s employee will cease.

In the meantime, it’s better to become and official Imperial soldier and have one’s identity guaranteed.

Besides, being an Imperial soldier is a more reliable job.

That should be a restraint to Peter to not ignore his debt.

“I’m sure Peter will be able to balance the matter of the commander’s rank with the title and territory. He will also match the salary I’m paying you and give you plenty of rewards. You should accept the job for ‘Countess Bohnhoff’.”

“Oh, I see. ‘Countess Bohnhoff’.”

Gilbert, who is more perceptive that his looks, seems to have realized my intentions.

He is an Imperial nobleman and I, a noble from the Kingdom, can’t hire him forever.

He should accept Peter’s invitation to become the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Army and accept the terms of the title, territory, reward, and additional salary.

“Eh? And the salary Wendelin is now paying?”

“I think the new ruler of the Empire shouldn’t be too stingy in welcoming the new Supreme Commander of the Army. When the soldiers know that their Commander has been welcomed with so much favor, they will feel more comfortable accepting their new Supreme Commander.”

“Baron Bohnhoff was originally a highly regarded general, but this is a good compliment. Baron Bohnhoff, will you accept me?”

“I’d be happy to. I will fight with all my might and I will certainly deliver the head of the Duke of Nuremberg.”

“I want you to take control of the Imperial Army headquarters and maintain the security of the City. In the meantime, the remaining defeated soldiers will be fleeing, and I need to you reorganize them as well. I’ll give this to you, I’m not sure if it will be of any use to you.”

Peter hands the sword with his personal crest to Gilbert.

“I’d appreciate it.”

At the present moment, Peter had no authority, but what he gave Gilbert was still better than nothing.

“I’ve acquired even more debt. There’s no point worrying about the details, so I’ll go to the Imperial Palace.

The majority of the military forces would begin to split off from us to take control of the Imperial Army headquarters and maintain security.

“I’m going with you.”

“Do your best.”

“Strange encouragement…”

Elle also led the army and follower Gilbert.

The number of people escorting Peter and the others had frown to a few dozen or so but it seemed to be well reasoned to draw a large army into the Imperial Palace, and Peter himself didn’t seem to be concerned about it.

“Well, let’s go to see the woman with the head full of whipped cream and bubbles.”

“Your Highness, who is that?”

“My stepmother. The woman who gave birth to my brothers.”

“You’re relentless.”

“No matter how I try, she’s still an irredeemable bitch.”

To Burkhart’s statement, Peter replies unapologetically and bluntly.

Treating the emperor’s rightful wife as a bitch even though it is very problematic, must mean he hates her a lot.

“I’m sure you don’t have good feelings for her.”

“Guru. She’s an idiot, she had a bad character, she’s always bragging about her family’s stature, and she’s just a pain in the ass. Listening to that woman’s story is a waste of previous time. Let’s get this over with as soon as possible.”

With Peter leading the way, the group of dozens headed to the Imperial Palace.

The guards let us into the Imperial Palace surprisingly easily.

“Did the advance maneuvering work?”

“Yes, I think it is Count Landsberg, sir,” Emera succinctly answered my question.

As I recall, he was the collaborator that Peter named earlier.

“What kind of person is he?”

“Well, he’s very fond of the ladies and…”

“Oh! If it isn’t Your Highness! We’ve taken control of the Imperial Palace as we planned. By the way, there are so many beautiful women as well as Emera. Lovely ladies, my name is Helmut Kaiser von Landsberg.”

The Count of Landsberg was a nobleman in his early twenties.

His blue hair, which was a shade darker than Louise’s, was carelessly grown out, but it was well-kept and radiated with luster.

His clothes also looked plain at first glance, but he seemed to have spent quite a bit of money sewing with good materials, which made him stand out even more.

His face too was perhaps even better than my mentor and brother Erich’s.

It may be more appropriate to call him a refreshing nobleman.

“I just received a call from His Highness and locked the fly in her room. She smelled of rancid perfume and was making a lot of noise.”

“That must have been tough.”

Even Count Landsberg, a lady-loving a handsome man, described Peter’s stepmother harshly.

She must have said and done terrible things on a regular basis.

“Yes, Your Highness. However, there are five gorgeous young ladies in front of me. I would very much like to hear their names in their beautiful voices.”

It was a flattery that made my mouth numb, but strangely enough, when Count Landsberg said it, it seemed smooth.

After all, a handsome man is a handsome man no matter what he does or says.

It’s something I knew from my mentor and brother Erich.

“My name is Elise. I’m Count Baumeister’s wife.”

“Ina. I’m also the wife of Count Baumeister.”

“Louise. Likewise.”

“Wilma. Me too.”

“My name is Katarina. I’m Count Baumeister’s wife, too.”

Since he asked, the introduction of the five women was left up to them.

Count Landsberg didn’t seem to care that their greetings were short.

“Oh! And I’m the undisputed greatest hunter of love in the Empire, and all five of the fairest women who have come to my attention are Count Baumeister’s wives! This Count Landsberg gives you admiration.”
