Chapter 397 – The Capital City

We reached the capital the morning of the second day after we left Urmut.

- it's the capital? (Fran)

“it should be. I don't think there are any other cities of such magnitude”, I replied.

-  It’s huge. (Fran)

As we ran through the sky on Urushi’s back, agiant city came into view. Barubora, of course, was a large city, but it simply could not be compared with the sheer size of the capital city. It was even bigger than the beastmen’s country.

Even the fortress walls were of unprecedented size. They were more than 50 meters in height, twice as high as the trees from the forest surrounding the capital. Well, considering the demonic beasts of this world, I guess you need walls that size to ensure the safety of the city.

In addition, these walls did not only look rough and utilitarian, the walls and towers with spires were beautifully finished, which only enhanced the impression the city made on me. As expected of a capital, even the outer walls showed its majesty.

The capital was located slightly to the southeast of Aressa, which was in the northern part of the country, northeast of Urmut. It seems that at the time of the founding of the Kingdom of Cranzer, the center of the country was here, but over the long years of its existence, the country grew and the capital ended up being east of its center.

I heard that about 200 years ago they wanted to move the capital closer to the sea, but considering the cost of money and ore needed for this project, this venture was abandoned. Well, the amount of money needed to rebuild such a capital would be enormous, it’s easily understandable why they wouldn’t do something like that

“Come on, let's go enter the city,” (teacher).

- Woof! (Urushi )

- Nn. (Fran)

Having reached the outskirts of the capital, we went to the entrance gate. A long queue gradually appeared into view as we approached. while there was also a long line at the entrance to Urmut, this one was an order magnitude bigger.

Diaz warned us about it before we left Urmut, but its actual scale greatly exceeded my expectations. All of this because of the auction. To give an idea of its scale, by lining these people straight, the end of the line would end up in the woods having to fight off demonic beasts. To avoid such an issue, the queue was along the walls.

The area was patrolled by soldiers and knights, in addition to guards. They were all making sure that people in the queue weren’t making trouble

“It’s gonna be long but there’s nothing we can do about it, let’s wait”, (teacher).

- Nn. (Fran)

Being at the end of the line, we couldn’t even see the end of it.

In Urmut, lots of people could be seen trading while waiting in line, but the scale of trades was different here. It looked like a small market!!

There were even small kiosks and shops! While these seemed to be easy to build, was it really worth it? Well it seemed like it, everyone had more than enough time to properly examine goods because of how slow the line queue went, so I guess it’s fine.

Many of them were selling what looked like good old ekiben (packed breakfasts usually sold in train stations) from my native Japan, although there were probably things I weren’t used to in these, Fran might want one of these?
