VOLUME 3 CHAPTER 9 REWRITE

“Tina-chan is dead.” Headmaster Kester said.

Alisha’s vision seemed to darken at these words.

At this time, there were 3 people in the office. Tina was lying on the sofa in the middle with Alisha looking at her. Alisha’s legs were weak and she had to hold on to the table or she would have collapsed to the ground, “You,” Her words got stuck in her throat and she suppressed her emotions before continuing, “What basis do you have for that diagnosis?”

How could someone well and alive just die like that? Alisha believed that this was just an illness with weird symptoms.

“Tina-chan died sometime ago actually.” Kester said as he looked at Tina’s pale white cheeks, “She died half a month ago protecting Willy.”

“But she was fine this afternoon! And she had gone to classes and testified before the international courts! You said she was dead, fine, who is the one that I’ve been seeing huh!?”

“A resurrected Tina-chan.”

“R, resurrected?”

“Sasha, didn’t you know? Tina-chan has only been able to live up till now by sharing the burden of being the Emissary of the God of Fate with Tess. Kester said and then stuck his tongue out and gave a silly smile, “Ah, oh no~ Willy said I couldn’t tell any foreigner about this~”

Alisha’s mind couldn’t handle the sudden revelations.

Tess? Emissary? God of Fate?

“Something probably happened to Tess that has taken the Emissary powers from Tina,” Kester said as he pointed at the glowing mark on Tina’s forehead, “But it hasn’t disappeared yet.”

“… You said Tina is the Emissary?”

“Un, but she might not be any moment now.”

Alisha couldn’t believe her ears.

Presently, the only Emissary who is known is the one belonging to the God of Fate. There are rumours and myths that there are other Emissaries hiding and lurking amongst the humans. Some countries would even leak information that they had Emissaries in their fold. But the only one that is internationally recognised in the Emissary of the God of Fate.

Historically, the Emissary of the God of Fate has always been a female elf. The only thing privy to humans about the process is that the Emissary does change. which is both a good and bad thing.

Because the belief of gods were widespread amongst humans, and Emissaries are the only way gods can relay their will, Emissaries have power above and beyond that of any country’s ruler. This essentially means that Emissaries can enter any country freely, interfere in its internal politics and even instigate armed conflict.

Religion is therefore a very powerful political weapon and whichever country controls the Emissary can rule the entire human realm.

However, all Emissaries have been from the elven race, which has shunned conflict and human politics.

“… But now.”

Txarango has its first human Emissary.

“You, you’re lying… And Tina is going to die!”

“She’s already dead.” Kester corrected, “It’s thanks to the mark on her forehead which has sealed Tina’s soul and prevents her from crossing over. But who knows how long more it can last.”

“Headmaster! Don’t you have any way of saving Tina!”

“Are~ Sasha doesn’t wish to see Tina-chan die?”

“Of course not!”

Kester walked up to Alisha and raised his head to look at her. Alisha looked back at Kester and found, for the first time, that Kester’s eyes were large and dark, befitting of his young demeanor. However, there was something odd about them that she couldn’t quite identify.

She couldn’t see her reflection in her eyes and after staring into them for a long while, she felt like she was about to fall into a bottomless abyss.

Kester slowly spoke, “Sasha, are you willing to see Txarango have its own Emissary?”

“…” Alisha’s shoulders drooped, “I… Don’t know about politics…”

She thought back to what Tina was like, how she sat close to her and caressed her hair tenderly, “But I, promised Tina… That I would teach her how to do her hair in braids…”

“Then it can’t be helped~” Kester giggled, “Sasha, you mustn’t tell anyone regarding Tina-chan’s identity. She still hasn’t decided if she will become an Emissary. This is a secret that only few people know.”

“Alright…”

“If you’ve made a promise with Tina-chan then you got to fulfill it. And if I don’t do anything, Willy will definitely get angry at me! I’m afraid of an angry Willy the most.”

“H, headmaster, d, do you have a way to save Tina!”

“I do.” Kester said as he puffed out his chest with pride, “But we have to go to the Forest of Elves first.”

“Eh? But humans can’t enter the Forest? There’s a spell in the Forest which makes it impossible for humans to find the road. Even if they do find the road, they will be cursed to be lost and not be able to find their way into the depths…”

Just then, an idea flashed in Alisha’s head, “Could it be that Headmaster is an elf in human disguise!”

“You guessed wrong. My ears are round.” Kester said with amusement, “Sasha is so funny~ I can go to the Forest because i have special rights.”

“…?”

“Once upon a time, the elves gave me special rights which allow me to come and go freely to and from the Forest.” Kester said and turned to look at Tina, “Let us hurry, we don’t have much time left.”

“Alright!” Alisha got ready to carry Tina but Kester stopped her.

“Bringing Tina-chan will only slow us down. Let’s leave her in my office.”

“But!”

“I’ve already told Willy. He will be here once he’s finished with some business and if anything happens he will be able to deal with it.”

“…”

“No need to be afraid~ As long as I don’t allow it, no one will be able to enter my office. Alright, let’s go!” Kester said as he took Alisha’s hand, “Close your eyes. It might get uncomfortable.”

Alisha hesitated for a moment before obediently closing her eyes.

Several seconds later, a strong wave of nausea hit her and loud ringing filled her ears. Alisha repeated Kester’s instructions in her heard and kept her eyes shut tight as she endured the strong urge to vomit.

“We’re here.”

When she heard Kester say this, all the discomfort disappeared as though it were an illusion. Now that she was sure she could open her eyes, she slowly did so, “!!!”

The surroundings left her dumbfounded, “W-w-w-w-w-w-w-w-where is this,” She asked Kester timidly, “Weren’t we just in the office…”

“We can’t possibly have come here on foot can we?” Kester replied as he pulled Alisha along, making crackling sounds as he stepped on the ancient fallen leaves.

Trees tall enough to pierce the heavens, a thick impenetrable canopy, ice-cold, white mist that permeated the forest floor and an absolute silence that seemed to make the forest pure and holy. Even though she’d never been here, Alisha knew where she was immediately.

This was the Forest of Elves.

William held his nose as he surveyed what was once a bustling market district that was now just rubble and gore with no signs of its former self.

A stench that came from the corpses which littered the district permeated the surroundings. The corpses were all charred, as though lightning had shot through the streets and cooked them. There was also a crater up ahead about 60 meters in diameter and 2 storeys deep which was undoubtedly the site of a massive battle. Unfortunately, the culprits were long gone.

Damn it! William cursed as he recalled the number of casualties. What do they take the lives of my citizens for…!

“Your highness!” A subordinate called out as he rushed over, “We found traces of magic use.”

“Bring me to it.”

Under the guidance of his subordinate, William came to a building which was one of a few buildings that had not been completely destroyed. From what few identifiable items were left, it was probably a general goods store.

“On this wall,” The subordinate said as he pointed to the side which was facing the crater, “Are signs of a magic formation.”

“… Indeed.” William said as he swiped some of the ash off the wall and rubbed it, “The stone structure has changed and this only occurs when a magic formation is set on it.”

Science’s progress has been historically very slow and has typically been shunned in favour of magic until several decades before when a famous magician achieved significant progress in magical prowess through scientific knowledge. Thereafter, humanity began to see the importance of science and began setting up scientific research departments so as not to fall behind their peers.

Presently. the advancement of science was still limited but there were significant synergies with magic, particularly in crime scene investigations, where what type, element of magic used could be traced using both magic and scientific methods.

“We’re still running the tests and have not figured out what type of magic formation this is. But…”

“Say it.” William ordered.

“Please pardon your retainer’s stupidity, but this magic formation… Cannot be by human hands.”

“What do you mean?” William asked with a frown.

“Human magic cannot create the sort of elemental changes of the level which you see here.”

“What if it happens to be a very powerful individual?”

“That is someone, if his magic happens to be that powerful, who is definitely a very dangerous human.”

“…” William sank into silence, “… An elf huh?”

“When you talk about powerful magic capabilities, elves are the first thing that come to mind.”

“And demonic beasts, it just so happens that I’ve been doing research on them lately.”

“Haha, that’s too scary. The one from before caused such a ruckus that I’m frightened just by the thought that something like it might appear.”

When it came to demonic beasts, Molan came to mind for William. The young man who singlehandedly defeated the demonic beast is currently residing in St Txarango Academy as a result of negotiations between Rosa and Txarango.

There were just 13 days till the king of Rosa makes his call to Txarango. I cannot let them take away Molan, William thought.

“Is there any progress with finding any witnesses?”

“Geh, nothing for now, your highness.”

“Time is of the essence. Eye-witnesses are crucial in identifying and apprehending the culprits. This incident is extremely dangerous and the losses are massive. The longer this case goes unsolved, the more grievances the people will have.”

“Yes.”

“Once you have anything, anything at all no matter how small, report to me at once.”

“As you wish, your highness!”
