Magi’s Grandchild, Chapter 106

A Playful Proposal

Laughter echoed throughout the air. We easily recognized it as belonging to Schtrom, but it seemed like most of the people here had never heard it before.

“Hey, Shin, what is-”

“Is this your first time with Mr. Galan? That voice belongs to Oliver Schtrom, leader of the demons.”

“Seriously!?”

Answering Mr. Galan’s question created unrest among the commanders of each country, and it was understandably so. After all, Schtrom was the leader of the army that they feared the most. So to speak, he was the last boss. He created monsters and even forcefully turned humans into demons. Even though only his voice had appeared, I couldn’t help but feel afraid. As panic spread throughout the room, Schtrom’s voice, likely using amplifying magic, spoke again. “No, if you think about how you would react if you tried to attack a demon… it’s ridiculous, isn’t it, Shin Wolford?”

He was trying to instigate me into attacking him… was he doing this for fun? Unable to control my anger, I yelled out loud.

“He’s a teasing bastard, like usual!”

Org tried his best to calm me down.

“Calm down, Shin. He wouldn’t have come all the way out here for no reason.”

I knew that deep down, Org was also enraged, but he kept it well hidden so as to see what the demon was up to. I tried to suppress my anger, and Org calmly searched around for a sign of the enemy’s movements. Schtrom confirmed the situation we had already found out.

“Walls surround you on all sides. You’re trapped in there.”

It was true that we had built the walls to keep higher-level beasts out of our settlement, but now we were trapped in here with no way out.

“Surrounding these walls is a large group of disaster class beasts, waiting patiently.”

I realized that I had not checked the outside of the wall for quite some time, so I had no idea what was going on outside of this area. However, there is a large moat surrounding us, so nothing should be able to approach from the outside.

“Now, I wonder what would happen if the wall fell?”

One of the commanders said, with a face full of despair.

“ W-what?! Don’t tell me you’re going to try breaking down the wall?”

I assumed he was just overreacting to Schtrom’s appearance, but anything could happen. Of course, Schtrom would eventually consider breaking the wall, and it was well within his power to do it with no problem. However, it seemed that this idea had not occurred to the people, and turmoil spread throughout the armies gathered inside the wall.

“Oh, Wolford doesn’t look surprised. Were you expecting this?”

I turned towards the speaker.

“It’s natural to think so, right? I’ve fought Schtrom directly, I won’t underestimate him.”

At first, we thought the wall wouldn’t be destroyed without much difficulty. We knew better now. Still, we made the wall so we would have time to come up with a plan. I folded my arms and replied again.

“Well, I called you out today because I want to make a suggestion.”

“…”

I realized that my voice had not reached Schtrom. I had not used voice amplifying magic, and he hadn’t heard me. My face began to turn red, and I could see Org desperately trying to hold back a laugh. No one else was laughing, and they all stood around looking at their feet. The only people that had heard me were the ones standing around me, so it seems that the commanders took Org’s expression in an entirely different way.

“His highness is so angry…”

It seems that they thought we were angry or scared. You should never laugh in a situation where an enemy appears and looks ready to declare war.

This is bad. The morale of everyone is decreasing. Schtrom spoke once more. “Actually, I have made a decision.” Org, who had finally regained his composure, turned his attention towards Schtrom’s words and murmured. “Did you finally decide to conquer the world?” This was a natural assumption, and anybody else would have thought the same. The people around me looked crestfallen, as if they had expected this sudden turn of events. But Schtrom’s next words were something we never expected.

“No, I will not conquer the world. I will destroy it.”

The moment those words left his mouth, time stopped. What did he just say? Destroy the world!?

Org activated voice amplifying magic, and began to yell at Schtrom.

“Are you stupid!? What do you mean by that!?” Schtrom greeted Org with a friendly voice.

“Ah, this is his royal highness Augusto, isn’t it? Good day.”

Org, frustrated at this nonchalant greeting, yelled once more.

“I don’t have time for your games! What did you just say!? Instead of conquering the world, you’re going to destroy it!? Do you know what will happen if you do that?”

Org’s confusion was justified. It would seem more natural for Schtrom to want to conquer the world, as a place to produce large numbers of beasts and demons. What could he possibly be thinking?

Schtrom expressed his feelings easily, acting like he had not just threatened to destroy the world.

“It will change nothing, right?” Org, shocked by this declaration, let out a yell.

“W-what!?” Schtrom continued, ignoring Org’s outburst.

“I am not destroying the world because I want to.” Org interrupted him once again.

“I-I don’t understand what you mean.”

“There is no meaning. But there is also no meaning for this world’s survival.”

“What are you talking about!?”

I do not understand Schtrom’s words. There’s no point in destroying the world… but he’ll destroy it anyways? What kind of zen-like answer is that? And what did he mean, there was no meaning in the world’s survival?

“Now, it is up to you how to interpret my words. I will destroy the world, please accept that fact.”

This was too selfish. He wants to destroy the world, for a reason not even he knows. Fear and confusion linger among the people, but Schtrom continues to speak, ignoring them. “While destroying the world is okay, it wouldn’t be fun to just attack each country as they currently are.”

This demon was insane! Is destroying the world just a game to him?

“I will give you a month’s grace. In that time, build up your strength and decide on a plan. The inside of Wolford’s wall can be your base.”

I felt light headed. Org spoke, expressing the feelings of everyone.

“…Do you think this is a game?” Schtrom laughed.

“That’s right, this is a game. Please entertain me as best as you can. I’m looking forward to our time together a month from now.”

“D-do you think we’d just consent to that?” Org yelled, looking outraged. Schtrom addressed his concerns.

“Well, if you don’t go along with it. Each country will be destroyed, one by one.”
