Monster Paradise Chapter 16: Changes in the Life Wheel

Lin Huang quietly circled around the lakeside and began filling water bottle. After he filled his bottle, he found a safe spot and waited till the sun set.

Sand Ogres had poor eyesight and coupled with their innate resistance to heat and cold. As a result, they weren’t afraid of the scorching sun and sandstorms and were active in the day.

At night, their vision shrinks to a radius of 100m. They weren’t able to distinguish between men and beast past the 100m. Unless they were desperately in need of food, they rarely ventured out at night, making it the perfect time to hunt a mob of Sand Ogres.

A cloudy night rolled in as the orange hue of the sunset was blanketed by an ocean of darkness. It was a moonless night, barely a star to be seen in the sky. It was the perfect time to hunt the ogres. He left his hiding spot as he approached the only source of light in the darkness.

He spied on the ogres’ settlement from a distance. 30 ogres. Not a single one of them exceeded 10 metres ---- All of them were at the BlackIron tier.

Ogres’ weren’t known for their intelligence but perhaps due to the influence of human settlements, they began to mimic them. The settlement was surrounded by a tall wooden fence which encircled a cluster of makeshift shacks. The sight of the shacks and the 30 ogres painted a picture reminiscent of a tiny human village. If the humans were over 5 metres tall and the shacks the size of a two storey house.

As Lin Huang circled the fence, the thunderous snores of the ogres echoed in the night. Lin Huang locked onto his first prey. A roughly 5 metre tall ogre sitting cross-legged in this shack while he picked his feet. With a slurp, the ogre licked the dirt off his finger as he inserted his finger into his mouth. Disgusting.

Lin Huang was starting to worry about the intelligence of his future summon. However, he quickly banished this thought. Spotting a hole in the fence, he decided on a plan to lure the ogre out. He picked up a stone and tossed it through the hole in fence and at the feet-picker.

The ogre scratched his head as he picked up the stone and started walking towards the direction he saw the stone came from. He saw a vague shadow behind the fence but because its interference, he couldn’t get a clear picture. He slowly got up and picked his three metre long club before lumbering towards Lin Huang’s position.

Sand Ogres’ had a massive appetite and usually couldn’t find enough meat to satisfy themselves. As such, they wouldn’t reject meat that offered itself up for dinner.

Behind the fence, Lin Huang was grinning as he saw his prey approaching him.

Soon, the ogre circle around the fence and came face to face with Lin Huang. He spaced out for a moment before lifting up his stone club and started attacking Lin Huang.

Lin Huang immediately ran off to a sand dune nearby. This greatly infuriated the ogre as he smashed the fence next to him before chasing after Lin Huang, with a fevered look of hunger in his eyes and drool dripping from his mouths. Humans were a rare delicacy for ogres due to their tender meat as such it would be remiss of him to ignore a delicacy that offered itself to him.

The ogre swung his club recklessly as he chased Lin Huang to the dune. However, his eyes suddenly went dark as he saw a red shadow flash past him, his headless body crumpling to the ground with a thump soon after.

“Good Job, Shirou!” Lin Huang praised the teenager as he lifted his thumb at him.

Shirou had a combat rank of Three-Star BlackIron and with his recent advancement, his combat strength was nearly that of a BlueCopper monster. With the aid of his Blood Arts, decapitating that ogre was easy.

*Ding* Kuro’s customary system alert rang out in his head as a translucent message popped out in front of him.

[Congratulations Master, You have attained --- Sand Ogre Monster Card fragment x1]

At the same time, a stream of white Prana flowed into Shirou.

“I almost forgot. When monsters killed each other, the survivor absorbs the defeated party’s Prana.” While Lin Huang knew about this, it was his time witnessing it.

Humans on the other hand did not possess such a trait. The only time a Human is able to absorb a monster’s Prana is when he advanced in rank. The body absorbs a portion of the monster’s Prana. This was known as Prana Baptism. In normal situations, without the aid of special Life Arts, the Prana would only dissipate instead of being absorbed.

However, as Shirou absorbed the ogre’s Prana, an unexpected change happened in his body.

The normally dim third section of his Life Wheel rapidly lit up and soon was full. The 4th section started lighting up, followed by the 5th, 6th … all the way till the 28th section.

As his Life Wheel sections stopped lighting up, the Prana around Shirou dissipated.

What just happened?! Lin Huang was stunned by the sudden turn of events. He did not expect sudden increase of Prana. Previously due to his Prana Consumption rate and severely damaged Life Wheel, he only had a couple months to live. However with this serendipitous replenishment, he no longer lived under the constant threat of death.

“Kuro, does my sudden increase in Prana have anything to do with the ogre Shirou just killed?” Lin Huang voiced his suspicion.

[Monsters summoned by the Monster Card, have a Life Wheel tied to their Master. Both Life Wheels will maintain a parity in Prana. As such there is an even split in Prana gained by killing a monster. However, if the monster’s Life Wheel is full, all of the Prana gained will be absorbed by the Master’s Life Wheel.]

Kuro’s answer came as a shock to Lin Huang however it at least ruled out the possibility of the increase being due to another bodily defect.

Killing a single ogre awarded me over 20 sections worth of Prana. If that’s the case, I will be able to fill my Life Wheel if I continue killing ogres?!

As this thought crossed his back, he excitedly turned around and dashed to the ogre’s village...
