Chapter 58: Not Just Mere Zombie Puppetry

TLer: Noodletown Translations

Editor: Sigil

Just from looking at the advanced zombie’s ability in combat, one could tell that she was much stronger than the other mutated zombies. The most obvious difference was that an advanced zombie had already developed a basic level of consciousness.

Mutated zombies like Ye Lian only had a consciousness that was merely budding.

However, the big sister zombie that wasn’t wearing underwear obviously had a trace of genuine awareness. It may not have been complete, but compared to zombies who acted on instinct, it was a qualitative leap in cognitive function.

One could only imagine what kind of terrifying killing machine she’d turn into if she was given the opportunity to continuously evolve.

Lurking within the shopping mall would provide her with a copious source of food for a long period of time. Mutated zombies that emerged would serve as her evolutionary nourishment. However, the intrusion of Ling Mo’s group had ruined her future prospects.

This was the first time Ling Mo had been injured by a zombie, and even almost killed by it since he obtained his zombie puppeteer skill.

To say that he had no lingering fears was false. In reality, Ling Mo’s heart continued to furiously thump even after distancing himself from the shopping mall.

“That was far too savage… I didn’t think that monsters who were so much stronger than mutated zombies would already exist…”

Ling Mo’s face turned a little unsightly, but his state of mind calmed down again shortly after.

Clearly, there were few advanced zombies in existence. That being said though, there might be a few more advanced zombies like her in this large city filled with millions of zombies.

But all of those zombies had slowly evolved on their own, while Ling Mo on the other hand could use his ability to speed up Ye Lian and Shana evolution.

If one advanced zombie was this strong, then how strong would he be if he had two of them?

Ling Mo had even started imagining how existences that were even stronger than mutated zombies would be like…

“Rather than making wild guesses, why don’t I raise the two strongest zombies in existence myself!”

Ling Mo’s eyes suddenly blazed with passion. Shana herself had already said that she didn’t want to return to how she was in the past. Going by that logic, Ye Lian probably wouldn’t want to either.

Since they could no longer return to human society, they had to possess enough strength to survive in this world. Otherwise, they’d be targeted by other stronger zombies sooner or later.

The sneak attack on Shana today just so happened to serve as a wake up call for Ling Mo.

In addition, the basic level of consciousness the advanced zombie displayed showed that a zombie’s evolution did improve both their physical and mental abilities.

His current goal and his initial desire didn’t weren’t in conflict!

Bringing around the two most powerful zombies in existence as he freely moved about this city filled with a sea of zombies would be incredibly awe-inspiring…

Sii… At this moment a sharp jolt of pain from his shoulder immediately broke Ling Mo out of his beautiful dream. He grimaced as he held his shoulder and looked for a relatively safer place to take shelter.

After taking off his clothes, Ling Mo’s eyes couldn’t help but twitch. The advanced zombie’s strength was way too strong. Not only did it leave five fingerprint shaped bruises on his shoulder, it even made his shoulder swell up a little.

Danger lurked around every corner at the end of the world. Even if he had special abilities and two strong mutated zombies at his side, he still ran the risk of dying at any time.

If it were someone else, they might do their utmost to avoid danger, but Ling Mo chose not to.

Fantasizing was nice and all, but achieving it was no small feat. Helping Ye Lian and Shana evolve meant that he needed a large amount of gels…

On the other hand, Ling Mo had realized his own shortcomings after this battle. It was very difficult for him to utilize his zombie puppeteer ability when he encountered enemies with greater spiritual strength such as an advanced zombie. He also found out that close combat was his weakness as well.

With his current combat prowess, he only held an advantage when he was faced ordinary zombies. He wouldn’t be able to withstand even a single blow in the face of an advanced zombie!

If this kept up, he’d end up being a burden for Ye Lian and Shana. Relying on them for protection was absolutely unacceptable for Ling Mo.

Ling Mo felt that his zombie puppeteer ability still plenty of room for development, his battle with the advanced zombie today served as a thorough wake up call for Ling Mo.

Simply relying on his control of zombies wasn’t enough. He had to figure out how to further develop the potential of his puppeteer ability! Aside from using it to controlling his puppets, could he also use his special ability to raise his ability in combat?

Of course, the process of figuring this out probably wouldn’t be so easy.

“What’s there to be afraid of? Compared to other survivors who have nothing to help them, at least I have the potential to improve myself, and the will to live on!”

Ling Mo secretly looked upon himself with disdain for a moment. Since he had this ability, he should full advantage of it! Regardless of how difficult it may be!

After all, compared to ordinary people was already very lucky.

For ordinary survivors, apart from joining camps like Wang Lin’s and working together to survive, there was almost no other way for them to avoid being killed. Those with thicker skins could also rely on the strong. There were always some people out there that in the world who were willing to accept vermin. For example, Shana. She was currently a mutated zombie, but in the past she was a silly girl.

A majority of the survivors would, in such a dangerous and terrifying environment, have likely lost their goals in life. Now, their new objective in life was to continue living.

Ling Mo was no different. However, he now had a more important goal. It gave him the determination and courage to plunge into dangerous situations, and even more reason to take risks for the sake of getting stronger.

While he thought that, he clenched his teeth as he raised his arm and pressed on his shoulder. The pain that jolted through him was so intense it caused him to gasp.

Hiss “Fortunately, I didn’t fracture any bones… Shana, help me out.”

Ling Mo pulled out a tube of ointment for relieving pain from his pocket. It was a part of his harvest when he previously looted a pharmacy.

An ordinary tube of ointment like this that was worth ten dollars was now a precious resource that could only be found. After all, fighting among zombies all day would lead to inevitable injuries. Usually some of the more minor injuries could be left untreated, but injury to one’s limbs could lead to fatal danger. For example, Ling Mo at present had difficulty raising his hands, let alone fight.

But Ling Mo suddenly revealed a wry smile when he handed the ointment to Shana.

Shana’s eyes were still glowing red, likely due to bitter battle she fought earlier after being ambushed by the advanced zombie and being sent flying shortly. With Shana’s current state as a mutated zombie, although she could hear and understand what Ling Mo said, making her help him apply the ointment in her hostile state was a little…

Ling Mo swallowed his saliva and silently shifted his gaze to Ye Lian when he saw the murderous intent in Shana’s eyes along with her faintly trembling lips as she stared at him.

Although she was controlled by him, Ye Lian was still the one who personally applied the ointment…

Under the gentle caress of Ye Lian’s petite and soothingly cool hands, Ling Mo endured the pain in spite of his body’s convulsions. When Ling Mo wore his clothes once again, a layer of cold sweat had emerged on his forehead.

However, even with the help of the ointment it would still take at least a few days for Ling Mo to fully recover. At the end of the world, having medicine to apply on one’s body was already extremely luxurious. Others that were less fortunate had to rely on their own body’s regenerative abilities to recover.

If it were a zombie, an injury of this level wouldn’t impact it at all. Their recovery would be swift as well…

For a mutated zombie like Shana, she wouldn’t receive any injury even if she were sent off flying.

After heaving a sigh of relief, Ling Mo pulled out a plastic bag and retrieved his spoils of war from Ye Lian’s hands, the viral gel from the advanced zombie.

Ling Mo could tell that this piece of gel stood out from the rest even though it was in the plastic bag. Its volume was even smaller than a mutated zombie’s gel, but it was almost entirely blood-red, without a single shade of variation in its colour. When placed before his eyes, it was as if he were looking at a piece of crystal clear ruby. Although Ling Mo was full of resentment towards the advanced zombie, he had to admit that this piece of viral gel did indeed look magnificent!

And the longer one stared at it, the harder it’d be to tear their eyes away from it…

If they weren’t told, would anybody realize that it was pulled from a zombie’s brain?
