479 – Treant’s Second Evolution

Cleaning up the remaining maris caterpillars doesn’t take long. They swiftly began digging holes to escape upon witnessing the hades mandragora’s death.

Aro plunges her enlarged left arm into the ground where the last one is burrowing, scooping up a spray of dirt. The caterpillar flies up, a chunk torn out of its body. After confirming its death, Aro runs towards me.

“Dragon-god-sa…ma?

Aro suddenly stops and looks up at me, her eyes open wide.

What’s wrong, Aro?

Treant… What are you…?”

Her expression blank and her voice trembling with rage, Aro aims an arm above my head. The treant desperately retracts its roots in an attempt to plead innocence.

I-it’s okay! It was necessary for the battle! I haven’t been taken over!

I take treant-san off my head. Volk and the others have also arrived, so I’ll take this chance to check everyone’s levels.

Their level increases are:

Aro: Lv: 55/85toLv: 67/85

Nightmare: Lv: 48/70toLv: 53/70

Magiatitie-jii: Lv: 57/70toLv: 61/70

Black lizard: Lv: 1/80toLv: 28/80

T-the rate of growth is incredible… I guess there were a lot of them. Hunting the caterpillars might actually have been more efficient than the mandragoras.

Aro’s rate of growth is particularly incredible. Not only is her magic stat high, but she also has superb wide-range magic skills. She excels at cleaning up swarms of lower ranked opponents.

Now then, treant, please show us how you evolve!

Hah! Master-dono!

The treant happily stands up straight.

Ah, do you also want to do it behind a rock? Though you need [Fake Life], so you can’t do it entirely alone. Well, if you don’t want me, I can do my best to not look…

No need for the concern.

My suggestion was shut down immediately… Does the treant actually want to be seen? Is this some kind of perversion…? No, it might just be a different way of thinking about evolution.

Well, if the person in question (or rather, the tree in question) says it’s fine, then there’s no point in me pressing the matter. I fire [Fake Life] at the treant. It’s always been my partner who’s done it for Aro and the treant’s evolutions, so it feels a little weird to do it myself.

Black light envelops the treant ― and then, in the next instant, it suddenly shoots up, piercing through the light. The slender arm-like branches on either side grow thicker and thicker. To begin with I’m starting down in shock, but as the treant grows, my gaze inevitably travels up until I have to crane my neck to look up. It’s seriously big.

It’s easily seven metres tall. I’m still slightly longer than the treant is tall, but I lose in terms of height. Oi, how am I meant to carry you now?

[Tyrant Guardian]: B+ rank monster

A huge treant. Its imposing appearance makes it worthy of the name “guardian”.

It possesses a terrifyingly resilient and solid defence.

Using a variety of close combat skills, it pummels its opponents into submission while using its overwhelming durability to win battles of attrition.

However, a [Tyrant Guardian] is at its most terrifying when it loses itself in rage and abandons defence.

O-ooh…! I see, treant-san is finally B+ rank. It’s genuinely strong now. It almost feels like too much of an upgrade from [Magical Tree].

O-ooh…! There’s [Heat Ray]! For that matter, [Flight]…? I don’t see how that could work. Though I’m super grateful if this means I don’t have to carry it.

I’ll check out the skills that intrigue me.

Characteristic skill [Indomitable Guardian]

The guardian will never fall to the same attack twice.

Provides resistance to attacks that have been received before.

O-ooh…! It’s something that would have been better if it was obtained sooner, but it’s still a super strong skill. It’s especially good as the treant doesn’t have many resistance skills.

Characteristic skill [Gravity Compression]

Confers a strong weight to an object, increasing its density.

Applying it to the user raises attack and defence, but reduces HP slightly.

Is it the applied version of [Gravity]? The defence and attack boosts are useful too, but if used in combination with [Clay], it might have some interesting applications.

Normal skill [Guard Lost]

A support magic skill. Lowers the target’s defence, but drastically raises attack.

It can be used on enemies and allies alike, so it has many opportunities for use. However, it is difficult to master.

O-ooh…! I see, it sounds interesting. It could be used to boost the attack power of an ally, or to lower the defence of an enemy… The problem is whether or not treant-san can use it effectively.

The last skill I’m curious about is… This one. Or rather, I’m hoping it’s what I think it is. I was worried about how I was going to bring treant-san back across the ocean, but depending on what this does, it might not be an issue.

Normal skill [Tree Spiritisation]

Allows for transformation into a tree spirit.

While in spirit form, HP, attack, and defence are halved.

O-ooh…! With this, perhaps the treant can turn into a carryable size.

[1] – The [Dragon’s Lost Property] title skill is a play on words that could also mean [Thing Dropped by a Dragon].
