568 – Position of the Intruder

Making my wings larger with [Dragon Mirror], I fly up. Just the air currents of my passage are enough to throw Alphiss’s zephyr off balance.

“Guh… This much won’t…!”

I release a [Dimension Claw]. As Alphiss struggles to regain her balance, a rift carves through the cliff wall behind her. She opens her eyes wide.

『…The next one will hit. You can’t do anything here. Fall back.』

As I say that to Alphiss, Lilixira prepares another four chakrams in her hands.

“As I thought, you’re far too naive.”

『Hey, if you do that now…』

The strength of those chakrams lies in their irregular trajectories and wide range of attack. If four of them fly though the area chaotically, it wouldn’t be strange for Alphiss to be hit.

“When I saw who came, I thought she wouldn’t slow you down at all, but now that she’s tripped you up for even a second, that’s perfect.”

The four chakrams mercilessly fly from Lilixira’s hands. I-is she serious…?

I already knew that she viewed the lives of her subordinates as disposable. But, Alphiss was her attendant. I’d thought she must have had some feelings for her, but there’s no hesitation at all in Lilixira’s movement.

I’m different from Lilixira. Even though Alphiss is Lilixira’s subordinate, I can’t kill her in cold blood.

At this point, there’s no way the strength of a single Holy Knight will make a difference. Even though it cost me a second, I don’t regret that I only threatened her. But, Lilixira seems to be different.

No, in this situation… The area around Alphiss might actually be safe. Lilixira might have seen my threat as an attempt to fluster her, and launched an attack to avoid showing any weaknesses.

Even though I’ve grown used to dealing with her chakrams, dodging them still relies on luck to some extent. Having an idea of where she’s aiming is a huge help.

I fly down to Alphiss. Either way, her attacks can’t hurt me much. I don’t want to take multiple sword hits, but I can kill her immediately if she attacks. It’s fair to say she’s not a threat.

“Ara… This is a shame.”

One of Lilixira’s [Aprajita] chakrams suddenly appears with [Immortal Step] and flies towards me. I’m surprised, but immediately know how to react. If I was my normal size, it would hit me, but in this form I can easily dodge.

I press down on the air with my wings, darting to the side. Suddenly, I notice something.

On this trajectory, it’s going to hit Alphiss. No, don’t think about it. How many Holy Knights have I killed already in this battle? I can’t loosen up now.

Alphiss must have come here prepared for death, too. I gave her a chance to run away. I also have Aro and the others waiting for me. No matter how I think about it, I can’t afford to protect her.

Suddenly, the events of the royal capital pass through my mind. Soon after Lilixira betrayed me and I was her and the Holy Knights, the slime became a Legendary monster and went on a rampage. But then… in exchange for the Holy Knights healing me, I promised to stop the slime.

Alphiss took part in the betrayal, but… She persuaded those around her to stop attacking and called for them to heal me. If it wasn’t for her, the city of Alban might have been entirely razed to the ground. For all she knew, I could have been attacked and killed by Beelzebub before I could do anything. Nevertheless, she gave up on trying to finish me off, and choose to save Alban.

After that was over… I heard something strange from Aro. Apparently, Alphiss warned her and told her to quickly escape from the castle. That was what led to Aro fighting her.

When I first met her, Alphiss seemed oddly high-handed, but now I can understand. She probably isn’t shrewd enough to be able to smile at someone she knew she was going to betray. That’s why… If possible, I don’t want her to die.

It’s not the result of logical thinking, but a spur-of-the-moment decision. Making my body bigger with [Dragon Mirror], I fly backwards and stop Lilixira’s [Aparajita] with my shoulder.

I managed to deflect it. But, my left shoulder is gouged open, and my left wing is torn.

“Why…?”

Alphiss asks me, an expression of shock on her face.

『Why do you follow her! Looking at her now, knowing what she’s done to you, how can you not see!? I know you let me go in the royal capital and tried to save Aro! I know you can think for yourself. So hurry up disappear!』

I shout at Alphiss with [Telepathy]. She weakly lowers her sword arm and freezes atop the zephyr.

“I, I…”

Four swords of light appear in Lilixira’s hands. Now that my wing is injured, she plans to fight me in close combat.

“Alphiss, it’s a wonderful surprise that you could be so helpful. It seems forgiving your self-centred actions was for the best after all. Please fly around and stay close.”

Lilixira… Only you could do something like this…!

『[Ideal Weapon]!』

I transform my forelegs with [Dragon Mirror].

I’m running low on MP, but that’s the same for Lilixira. I’ll end it in one burst in a counterattack.

In my hands, a giant sword and shield appear, shining with bluish-purple light. The shield is the same [Oneiros Flugel] as before, but the sword is new
