AFTERWORD

—I hope everyone can appreciate just how revolting Regulus is!

Hey everyone, it’s Tappei Nagatsuki, the mouse-colored cat! And it seems like this font is actually the default size now!

And with that déjà vu greeting out of the way, thank you very much for following along with this volume of the main story! How was Volume 18?

I suspect all you Re:ZERO readers who have followed along through eighteen volumes have realized it by now, but I really love sudden, dramatic reversals! The moment when characters actually manage to turn things around after having been put through the grinder in desperately hopeless situations is just the best!

Re:ZERO volumes are often spoken of as being filled to the brim with absolutely depressing developments, but for the author, the happiness afterward is really the main draw! But there is a certain catharsis to it that’s proportionate to how intense, deep, and overwhelming the adversity is.

Because of that, an author has to hold back tears while making the characters endure even more suffering. No matter the story, there is always some sort of conflict between the beginning and the end. That is the romance of it all—and fate.

So even while the main characters are enduring horrific circumstances in every volume, the comeback is always lurking just around the corner. Every battle has its ups and downs, and I hope you’ll enjoy watching how our favorite cast takes on enemies with their fair share of peculiarities!

And now for the standard thanks in the middle of a packed page!

To my editor, thank you for all the work with the intense fighting without any break at all between this and the last volume! I said that there was conflict between the beginning and the end, but it was practically fights all the way through!

To the illustrator, Otsuka, I’m sorry for all the notes and directions involved this time, particularly with Emilia’s outfit change. But Emilia in her wedding dress and Regulus in his white tuxedo and his eminently punchable face were just perfect! Thank you so much!

To the designer, Kusano, I was amazed that you pulled something entirely new out for the eighteenth volume. I can’t wait to see what else you have in store, but it was a fantastic job as always this time!

Matsuse’s manga version of Re:ZERO is entering the climax of the third arc in Monthly Comic Alive, and both it and Tsubata Nozaki’s The Ballad of the Sword Devil are still being serialized to great reviews! Every month is fun to see!

To everyone else at MF Bunko J’s editorial division, all the proofreaders, and all the bookstores, thank you very much for all your work!

I have so many other things that I need to share that I can’t list them all. Re:ZERO could only exist with the support of so many people, so thank you, and I hope you’ll keep supporting it in the future!

And finally, to the readers who are always supporting this series, I hope to see you again in 2019!

December 2018

<<While rubbing a stomach that has grown due to busyness>>

“You know, I don’t know what this preview-for-the-next-volume-or-whatever thing is, but I don’t recall ever saying anything about accepting this job or agreeing to handle it, so what exactly were you thinking, pushing it onto me? It’s not that I particularly hate it. It’s just that there’s a certain level of consideration that must be paid. That’s the bare minimum of respect in order to not upset the person you are asking for a favor, no? Not even bothering with that is saying that you don’t think that person is worth even that bare-minimum level of respect. Wouldn’t you say that’s practically a form of violence?”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“What would you even have me say anyway? That the theater screening of the second OVA, The Frozen Bond, has been officially announced? It is some story of my bride #79 and some gray cat meeting, but if you actually think about it for a moment, there are far more important events that could be depicted, right? You should have a bit more consideration when asking me to do this.”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“And also, you are too slow as it is. When is the next volume? Volume 19! When’s Volume 19?! Next year? March 2019? Going on sale at the same time as Volume 4 of the short story series? Do you think that somehow makes up for the amount of time you’re making me wait? You know, time is a limited commodity. Everyone only gets a certain amount of it. You certainly can’t expect someone to be content with you just stealing away their time like that out of some selfish, egotistical desire. It’s sick, I tell you, sick.”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“Also, what is this? Taking part in the seventieth annual Sapporo Snow Festival? What is that, even? How is that related to anything? You can find more details by going to see the first OVA that’s being screened in theaters? What is this?! Who do you think I am?! Don’t expect to get away with playing me for a fool!”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“There’s still more? According to the flyer for the 2019 Sapporo Snow Festival, there is a Re:ZERO display in the HBC Finland plaza? Do you expect me to apologize for the oversight? You think tearing a cover in a fit is enough to earn you forgiveness? Where is the sincerity? Where, I ask you!”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“And last is something that is a staple by this point—a birthday celebration at Shibuya Marui for the Oni sisters… What even is that?! Exclusive goods are available there, apparently! Some fantastic display or whatever! I’m surrounded by people who don’t understand a thing!”

“Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“I can’t be bothered with this anymore. You know, I’m tired after everything that’s been going on, so I’ll be retiring for a break. Such a dullard has no qualification to be my wife.”

“—Yes, that’s absolutely right, sir.”

“Ha-ha, that’s a good response. Anyway, I’ll be leaving here since I’m so busy.”

“…………………………Just die already.”
