Chapter 3

  The Divorce Papers Are Signed

 - Reinhard, check if his heart is beating! - shouted Subaru as loud as he could. His ears were ringing with excitement.

He was convinced he was NOT beating.

Other than a little knowledge of astronomy and what he had observed in Regulus, he had no reasonable basis for thinking so. He did, however, have a hunch, and a strong enough one that he could give his hand a slash right now.

If intuition really works, this is the moment I should trust it!

- Hm?

What's going on?

Suddenly, the air became thick. So much so that Subaru was no longer sure where the ground ended. A shiver went through him. It made him uncomfortable.

I know the feeling...

That force pushing against him was Regulus' gaze.

The Archbishop stood far away, but his gaze, even from such a distance, reached the very bottom of Subaru's soul and made the boy feel as if someone was driving rusty pins into his eyes, as if his arms and legs were frozen.

- Focus. I'm the one you're fighting!

Turning his back on the Sword Saint, Greed acted recklessly. His opponent did not miss this opportunity. The sound they heard when the white scabbard of the Dragon Sword struck the Archbishop's head brought to mind the sound of a building being blown up. All the while they were fighting, the water in the canal was turbulent and boiling. But now, after this blow, a wave was created so strong that a huge whirlpool formed, exposing the bottom of the canal.

What power... If I got hit with something like that, I'd die a hundred times... And Regulus, of course, was fine.

- Don't underestimate me. I am toying with you because I am gracious, but my patience also has limits," announced the Archbishop and smiled sinisterly, correcting his hairstyle after the blow.

Reinhard jumped back... He was about to jump back, but stopped in mid-step. His sixth sense told him that danger lurked behind his back.

- I have touched all the space around us. All of it belongs to me," he heard as he was about to retreat to another direction.

Regulus was now very close to him. He looked at him with hatred and superiority.

The Sword Saint used this moment to launch another attack, and just a moment later, the tip of the scabbard of the Dragon Sword was thrusting into the enemy's chest. Under normal circumstances, this blow would have torn Greed's body apart, but he only smiled mockingly.

- Bravo," he said coldly. - This tragedy is only happening because you can't understand how pointless your efforts are. I see no more salvation for you, but I promise that you will die spectacularly.

- Hmm? Subaru was right.

- What? - The smile disappeared from the Archbishop's face. He lowered his gaze and opened his eyes wide in astonishment. He realized that he had been outsmarted. Reinhard's punch didn't hurt him, but it wasn't supposed to either.

Enraged, he violently embraced the red-haired man and drove his fingers into his back. Everyone heard the sound of bones breaking.

- Have you ever experienced a flight to the moon? - he asked, looking up. Above them in the night sky shone a great white disc. Greed hurled Reinhard toward the stars.

As a kid, Subaru tried many times to toss the ball so high that it flew into orbit. Of course, he never succeeded. However, after the throw of the Archbishop of Sin, who also possessed a mysterious and powerful power, the Sword Saint flew up vertically. He flew and flew, not slowing down at all, until he became so small that he disappeared from their sight.

- Re... Reinhard! - shouted Subaru and held out his hand to the sky.

Subaru!

- Penetrating Hearts?! Reinhard, are you alright?!

You were right. His heart's not beating. I'm sorry, but it's gonna be a while before I get back. You're gonna have to...

He snapped. Apparently the reach of the blessing had run out.

- Well done, Reinhard! - muttered Subaru. He was worried about his friend, but understood that he wouldn't help him now.

I have my work cut out for me... Everyone is counting on me, and so is he.

- Subaru! Do...

- He'll be fine... I know it sounds weird, but you don't have to worry. At least not right now.

- I see! Then it's our turn. What's the plan? - she asked eagerly.

At first, Subaru was taken aback by how quickly Emilia stopped worrying about the Sword Saint, but he immediately understood.

She also wants to contribute to something and knows he would like that.

- Reinhard trusts you, but I trust you even more! - shouted Emilia.

- Well, normally everyone trusts me. Now I'll have the enthusiasm to work!

He clenched his fist, grinning from ear to ear. He was grateful for the faith placed in him.

It's time to take up the baton!

- It looks like you guys are having a great time, rogers.

They turned, hearing the voice of the enemy. Regulus was walking on rough water, nonchalantly straightening his collar.

- Maybe it's time to give up hope, what do you guys think? After all, you are about to pay for every insult and humiliation. Isn't that what's going to happen? Fornication, adultery, all deserve the harshest punishment... The punishment of many deaths...

He got rid of his most dangerous enemy, so he has time for speeches again?

- Are you accusing the most virtuous heroine of this century of harlotry? - muttered Subaru, who felt weary of the Archbishop's tiresome, mocking monologues. - There must be something wrong with you.

- What?

- What you heard, snowman! Move that empty head a little!

Regulus had not expected such an insolent answer. He had run out of words.

- I don't even want to know what kind of circuses you've been up to now, but I can see you doing whatever you like. The good stuff is over! Haven't you noticed? You're in a jam.

- What? Excuse me? What's the problem? Don't make me laugh. What do you even mean? Uh, no. I don't want to know. I'm not gonna waste my time with the empty words of some con man.

- Forgive me, but I'm going to say what I have to say anyway. You don't have to hear it, however, remember that YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO HEAR. And yet, you so enjoy talking about what you have a right to!

- The right to listen? - A bewildered Regulus paused, clearly intrigued.

Well, finally some positive feedback. Good thing I'm a big mouth. He dances when I tell him to dance!

- That's right! - he continued, taking a mocking tone. - Because you want to know how we're going to beat you, right? It would be stupid for you to die without understanding what happened! - He winked.

- Garbage... - Regulus exploded with anger, exactly as Subaru wanted him to. He jumped from the canal to the shore to catch the boy.

- I won't let you do that! - shouted Emilia.

Countless spears surrounded the Archbishop and locked him in an ice cage. Emilia figured that since she wasn't going to hurt him anyway, she might at least be able to immobilize him. However, Regulus merely waved his hand, and the icicles splattered into dust. He walked out of his prison with his head proudly held high.

- It's the same thing over and over again, like a monkey! When will you finally understand? When will it get through to you? Learn! It's not enough to have a pretty face, you have to have something in your head! What an insolent loser!

So Emilia's ice trap doesn't work either... Oh, well.

- I finally understand. He just has a damn nasty character," Subaru announced in a tone that suggested a great discovery.

- Yes... That's right... Er... - Confused, Emilia looked at him uncertainly.

- But I'm serious. This is not about insulting him. His character is the key, He gets joy out of humiliating others, out of looking down on them, so instead of getting it over with as quickly as possible, he goes around and plays at parrying our attacks," he analyzed.

He constantly claims to be fulfilled, perfect. His weak point is precisely this belief in his own uniqueness combined with a fragile ego. We'll hit that.

- So we can set traps for him and he will fall into them. This is where we have the advantage. We gain time!

- Enough to beat him?

- Penny for penny! I'll figure something out, we'll get him together. Do you trust me?

- Of course.

What guy wouldn't be happy to hear something like that from a girl in a wedding dress? A new force has entered Subaru.

- Emilia-tan, listen...

Subaru leaned over and began to explain something in her ear that clearly surprised her. For a moment, fear appeared in her eyes, but she quickly got herself under control.

- We will win," he assured her at the end. - He will beg for mercy. And when it's all over, you'll let yourself be picked up again, won't you?

- Fool! - replied Emilia and turned towards the approaching Regulus.

It was time for her to do her part as well.

- Al Huma!

For the umpteenth time, the sky above the Water Gate City was cratered with ice that collapsed on Regulus. As expected, the projectile only seemingly crushed him this time. In just a moment, the mass splashed into millions of silvery particles that filled the air above the canal.

- For all the power in your mouth, you have very little to show," cried Regulus, spreading his arms. The ice dust around him turned white. - Do you really think you can defeat me just by being stubborn? This is simply ridiculous. Who do you think I am? This is an insult... Hm?

He tried to find them with his eyes, but all he could see among the ice shards was Subaru's back moving away.

- Running away? At a time like this? How is this? How is this?! What is this! - he wailed and went after the boy in a flash.

The black-haired man didn't stand a chance. Just a moment later, the Archbishop was right behind him and was reaching out to grab him...

- And this is the moment to showcase my ‘skill’! Parkour!

- What!

Subaru judged Regulus to be a man who loses his common sense in anger. He was right. The more the Archbishop got angry, the easier it was to see through his intentions. The boy easily dodged, then jumped, grabbed onto the wall of the nearest building, and began to nimbly climb over it.

Greed from the ground level looked at him in wonder. Out of anger, his eyes ran blood.

- What is the meaning of this! Am I dealing with a real monkey here! Behave yourself! - He cried out.

Listening to those screams, Subaru had already managed to pass two floors and was on the roof.

It took Regulus a moment to realize that someone was missing.

- Just a moment... - he whispered, and his face darkened. - Where is Seventy-Nine?

Shit, a little too soon. I'm lucky it's only now anyway, but it could have waited a while longer....

- Come on, answer me! Where is Seventy-Nine?! Where did you hide her?!

- Whoa, you really call girls numbers! As if they were objects. That's very interesting, especially since, apparently, you tend to chase boys. What? You really think I'm going to tell you? Is there a synapse malfunction?

Looking deeply into his eyes, Subaru began to spin circles with his finger near his forehead. Regulus couldn't know what the phrase meant, but the boy managed to convey its meaning.

- You're gonna get it, monkey boy... We're about to be counted...

He didn't even try to climb up to where Subaru was. All he had to do was put his hand against the wall and immediately there was the sound of brick crumbling. The roof the boy was sitting on fell a meter down. The whole structure wobbled dangerously.

Subaru glanced below him.

Oh boy!

Regulus pushed half a floor away in one motion. Fragments of the wall and whatever was inside in the space the Archbishop had shifted collapsed somewhere behind, and what was left was not particularly stable.

It's about to collapse!

- Damn him! - shouted a panicked Subaru, struggling to land on the roof of the building next door. Fortunately, he could rely on his Guiltywhip.

Decomposed by Regulus, the object disappeared from the surface like a sinking ship.

- Come on, come on, come on! Run like vermin, like a rat... Hurry, because if you wait too long, you'll be finished. You'll be a wet stain! From a wife thief you will become a trampled tomato! - cried the clearly amused Archbishop, starting to demolish one building after another.

He cut a floor out of each one. Satisfied, he watched as the pushed out fragments of the walls destroyed the neighboring buildings. He acted like a child who pulled out one block and watched the whole structure collapse. He enjoyed ruining this beautiful city.

The Subaru meanwhile was speeding, trying to escape the hurricane of destruction, from one wobbly roof to another. At one point he hit a wider gap. He hooked the tip of his whip over something on the other side and jumped, flying straight for the window.

- It’ll work!!! - With a scream, he smashed the glass and fell inside.

Which way now! The stairs! I need the stairs!

Something very strange was happening with the building. The layout of the interior changed every moment, as if the Archbishop was playing with it like a Rubik's cube. Subaru had to decide quickly because any moment of inattention could cost him dearly.

Regulus' mocking voice came to him from far away.

- Cha. cha, cha, cha! You're such a filth! You obviously have a knack for running away with your tail between your legs! Say something else, you wife stealer!

Ignore him. You don't have time to listen to this crap. You need to focus on survival.

The words of the man from whom he learned parkour resonated in his head: "There will always be a way. Certainty. You have to act with confidence. Focus so you don't miss the exit. The moment you give up will be your end. Fate sealed."

There will always be a way.

This golden thought was a thousand times more valuable than anything Regulus had to say.

It doesn't matter how much wiser his words would be, because x times zero is still zero. There is nothing to compare this chatter to my Master's advice!

- Surviving...

Clind's words were meant to show what the secret of parkour was, but Subaru related them to all of life. He believed that there was great wisdom in them. He was going to repeat them to himself every time he found himself in a hopeless situation and close to breaking down.

The worst is when it's so bad that your legs and arms get heavy and you can't do anything. When bad thoughts fill your head. I already know that then you have to look for a ray of hope. You need to warm up your body, cool down your mind. Clear your heart. The most important thing is to somehow get out of a situation that leads to certain death. Now I can, for example, escape from a place where I am in danger " or change the circumstances so that I am no longer in danger, or at least less in danger. In other words...

He took a deep breath.

- E, Regulus! I know what your Authority is all about," he yelled as loud as he could.

He was still inside the crumbling building, so he didn't stop parkouring for a moment.

Or maybe he didn't hear over the bang? Or did he hear but didn't swallow the hook? No, if I'm right about his character, he must have swallowed it.

- Excuse me? Very interesting. Are you saying you saw through me?

Subaru heard a grim voice, and the building around it stopped undergoing its bizarre transformation, though it continued to crumble due to gravity.

- Great, what a difference! Well, thanks!

It got even more difficult. Subaru's task didn't change one bit - he had to get outside at all costs. He ran along the leaning wall, rolled across the floor and smashed the window, then jumped out through it, curling the tip of his whip around the frame to slow his momentum a bit. He landed on the ground, following the rules of the art by performing a somersault at the end. Finally, quite safe now, he fell on his back on the pavement.

- Phew... Phew... Oh, shit...

He was panting heavily. He felt the pain in his lungs and his pounding heart. His fingers and toes were numb.

He barely escaped with his life. At the last moment, because he was already starting to run out of strength. If he had thought of what to do a little later or decided a little later, he would have been dead.

However, I was right. I analyzed him well. He is simply a turd. Or more accurately, he thinks it's his sacred right to have everyone just nodding their heads as he makes his speeches about his own greatness. That he is entitled to everything. He claims he doesn't need anything, that he is fulfilled, but he can't live without comparing himself to others. Such is his sensitivity about himself that he constantly demands that the world validate his awesomeness. He uses his power to intimidate others into doing things the way he wants them to and thinking the way he does. He doesn't do this to vent his aggression. He just comes across as such a nasty, complacent little type. He bullies people not to prove he's stronger, but because he has such a fragile ego. It's what made it necessary for him to go into a direct confrontation with Reinhard, it's what makes him unable to ignore my talk. When the fight starts, his ego is more important than reason. He is the kind of guy who has never known defeat. He absolutely must destroy his enemy, trample him. Otherwise he won't feel that he's really won. He can't stand the nonsense I say...

- Well, there you go, have you had enough yet? Are you done running around? - asked Regulus mockingly. - And you wanted to challenge me! Truly, you're in the clouds...

Even before he could speak, Subaru sensed it approaching. He jumped to his feet and wanted to keep running.

- Well, there you go. I guess you're not running away after all! - he heard. At the same time he felt a gust of wind, and next to him, where just a moment ago his head was lying, there was a huge hole in the sidewalk. If he had been lying there half a second longer, he would have been dead.

- As you can see, pretending to be strong doesn't help. You don't stand a chance with me anyway, Work on accepting your true weak self.... Not that I'm reproaching you, but I just see it clearly, as I am extremely humble myself. - Regulus looked down at him. He was now in an excellent mood. He happily propped himself up with his shoulder. He had finally rubbed Subaru's nose in it. - Well, what's next? You said you figured out my Authority. Not that I believe it. People like you say whatever comes to mind, but I suppose you want to know how your guesses compare to reality? You want to know before you die? I'm gracious, so I'll take pity on you.

All according to my prediction!

- Well, gracious you are... - muttered Subaru.

Now, I could try to gain time by puzzling him, but that's not a good idea for two reasons. First, if I start guessing what Authority he has and make a mistake, he'll kill me instantly. Second, and more important, I have to do my best to get him to give me as many clues as possible.

- So what, you don't say anything? Or don't you have anything to say? So you lied after all? Lying should be punished...

- Of course not. I'll tell you in a moment," announced Subaru, kneeling on the pavement and giving Regulus a menacing look.

The Archbishop waited with.an indifferent face for the continuation.

- Your power is clicking pause during the game! - he fired, pointing a finger at him.

Regulus was stunned. He completely failed to understand what was being said to him.

After a moment, however, surprise gave way to rage. He felt humiliated. Before he had time to explode, Subaru spoke up again:

- Or else... - he said, opening his hand. - You have a Lion’s Heart that makes you stop time! What, did I guess? Ha! You're silent, but your face is enough for me to answer!
