Chapter 169 - Interlude

It took some time for Reese to recover. When he did, he chuckled hoarsely, as though the action would prompt Daneel to reveal that it was a joke. When no such thing happened, lines deeper than any that Daneel had ever seen on his face appeared on his brow, and with a serious tilt to his face, he said, "You're actually serious. You mean to do it. That's… absurd! I'm sorry, but it's just crazy! It's a fool's errand! All you'll get is an early death!"

Daneel had been staring into empty air while Reese had been thinking things through. During that time, he had only traveled further down the line of the decision taken, and by now, the conviction that this was the best thing to aim at had grown stronger.

To an outsider, it might seem impulsive, but who could say for certain that impulsive decisions could not be the correct ones? Impulsive decisions had led to him becoming almost a deity on Angaria, and in fact, this one was based on a lot of sound reasoning that he had been able to blaze through with the push of all the anger he still felt, even after all that had happened after his loss in control.

The Garbonors were the root cause behind everything happening on all the islands. He wanted to save them all...so why not go to the very essence of the problem, instead of beating around the bush and letting lives disappear while he battled in shallow waters, afraid or uneasy about going into the deep sea where sharks lay?

He had already had the intention to go after them, so what they had done here and in all the islands they had targeted had only made him decide to skip a few steps. His vision was also based on a sort of confidence he had acquired after his recent ordeal. The system had told him before that it needed two days to program those huge crystals to communicate with Angaria, and call upon his power. Now, he had done it in a split second, and when asked, the system had told him that in his rage, his dominatingly powerful consciousness had worked out everything needed and had even managed to trace out the location of his power by feel alone.

Such feats that would never be capable of one who stayed in firm control of their emotions were not unheard of. This was the one good thing that had come out of the entire thing, and it had told him that he wasn't alone here.

The power he had left behind was the quintessence of all the love and support showered on him by the people and the Will of Angaria. True, magic is different here, but this power was like a smith's hammer that would work on any metal, no matter which smithy it was taken to.

If worst came to worst, he now had something to fall back on, and this gave him a sort of confidence that was truly liberating. With such might backing him up, it would be sheer foolishness still fix his sights on anything not worthy of his time.

Everything he had done on the islands seemed minor compared to what he was setting out on now, but he saw that it had all been necessary to reach this point where he was ready to do what was needed. If compared, the former was like playing soccer on a street whereas the latter was the world tournament, but without the experience of one, one could not succeed in the other.

Seeing that Reese was still waiting for an answer, or at least, an assurance that he had only spoken out of anger, Daneel sighed and said, "I understand why you're worried, but don't be. I know my limits. I'll do what I can while still keeping my wits about me, so don't worry about me. I'm worried about you. Are you healing well?"

What he said didn't really give Reese what he had been looking for, but still, with a shake of his head and a shrug, he said, "Oh, yes, without any trouble. Your friend was a godsend. Without him, so many would have died. He has top-notch skills in healing, so I thought he was an expert...until he said that he had only dabbled in the subhect for a time as he had had a habit of nursing wounded animals he found near his home. Thankfully, he didn't say it around too many people…"

Daneel laughed out loud and nodded, imagining how it would have been for those people to hear that they were being healed by someone who had used to work on animals before. Quickly realizing that those animals might just have been complex life forms akin to the Godbeasts back on Angaria which were powerful beings capable of intelligent thought just like humans, he stifled his amusement and swallowed down the urge to say that healing humans might actually have been easier if what he was thinking was true.

Hearing the tent flaps rustling behind him, Daneel turned around to see Seline enter, then freeze. Knowing that it was time to tie up the last loose end, he watched as Reese looked at them both with thoughtful eyes before reaching a conclusion that was definitely wrong.

Getting up with a nod, he started to make his way out, stumbling around everything in his path. Looking at him, though, Daneel suddenly got a thought that made him stand up and say, "Seline, I know what you want to talk about, but give me a bit of time. Graiton is much like my friend, here, limping and trying to put on a brave front even though it hurts inside. Something needs to be done for them before they break. Reese, this is what I need you to do…"

An hour later, a large crowd was gathered in the mines of Graiton. All those working inside had been called out, and at the moment, except for the central corridor where people teleported to when they arrived here, the rest of the place was completely empty.

Unlike Larefa which had been mined for so long that its reserves were close to being completely diminished, there were only a couple of levels to Graiton's mines. A silence enshrouded the place, a silence that echoed of all the pain and blood that had been shed here, a silence that wormed into the minds of the slaves, in particular, warning that it would return if they took just a single single misstep.

In front of them all, at the very edge of the crowd stood Daneel along with all the tall slaves he had taken with him. They had just set down the massive chest they had brought here on his request, and right now, they sat with their backs to the walls of the main corridor of the mine, panting due to their exertion.

Standing with his hands folded behind his back, he studied everyone present. He hadn't really decided how he was going to do this, but as he looked into the eyes of all the Graitonians who had believed that they had been saved, but had then been cast into doubt due to the arrival of the Garbonors, he understood that actions were needed here more than words.

Hence, holding his silence, he walked to the chest and touched it. On all five sides, the wooden edges fell away, with the top sliding to the left then thunking to the ground, causing an echo that travelled deep into the mines.

What lay within made many gasps appear, and a moment later, when the two objects began to enlarge as if absorbing the air all around, the Graitonians moved back, some even trying to run in the crowd, spewing confusion and chaos around them.

"Watch closely."

With a single command, Daneel silenced them all. All their eyes latched onto the two objects, and while wincing inwardly, they looked at the boulder-shaped things with hands jutting out all over, whose fingers had begun to twitch and move, as if reveling in freedom after a long time of being imprisoned.

They grew until they covered the entire corrider. Then, they set off, rolling down the entryway as if hunting for something.

With bated breath, not knowing what to think, they waited. A few seconds later, a sound reached their ears, and when a few understood what it was, they gasped.

Daneel didn't leave the others guessing for long. He clapped his hands once, and a deep rumbling heralded the return of the two objects that had gone forth into the Pit. They were soon in front of him, one behind the other, and when he clapped his hands again, a round opening appeared in front of each.

From both the openings, crystals fell out, shining, sparkling, glittering in the bright light near the teleportation matrix, and at that moment, pin-drop silence reigned in the Pit.

Turning around, Daneel addressed them all in a queit voice. His words carried through the air, through the walls...and into the very hearts of each and every one present.

"A step forward, a step back. They pushed and made us take a step back. I kept my promise, and I've brought us a step forward. From now on, no Graitonian needs to toil in the Pit. No longer shall sweat and blood be the cost to be paid for these fruits of our home. We shall rise, and with us will rise Graiton. Heed my words. They shall pay.. Long live Graiton."
