Chapter 3

Part 1

The Tokyo Station platform was crowded with people.

The passengers of the limited train “Tsubame” got off immediately when it arrived. Many people carried large luggage, this being evidence that many came from far away. Meanwhile, a young man got off to the platform from the entrance of the first class.

He had a big trunk in his hand. However it wasn’t a beautiful man, but Hishamaru dressed in man clothing. Her fox ears and tail were hidden and she wore a hat. She rolled a slightly larger shirt, slacks and leather shoes. Her thin white wrists were in contrast with the large trunk she was carrying, however, her power of being fox possessed made her feel it light.

Hishamaru's beauty attracted the attention of the people around her, but she didn't care at all and watched the surroundings with a keen eye. Then, following Hishamaru, a man and a woman in kimono got off the train. It was Yakō  and Kokage, escorted by her brother. Kokage was dressed in kimono for the rest of the trip and Yakō  was wearing a hat with a summer Obi tied to a single garment, and not a kariginu as expected. But he was a young man now. He was like a long-established young master.

"Oh, we finally arrived."

He stretched out his body and his back, tense form the long journey.

Kokage on the other hand, hiding behind her brother, had a tense look.

And from the train, Kakugyouki finally showed his height. He wore the usual suit and was carrying a long box on his right shoulder with various curse tools inside.

When Kakugyouki appeared the curious eyes naturally scattered. He had a presence you wouldn’t want to be involved with even if it did not bother.

Hishamaru gently brings her face closer to Kokage.

“Kokage-sama, is everything all right?”

“Yes. I am tired, but my eyes are fine.”

"Don't overdo it, if anything happens, please ask immediately."

“Thank you, Hisha-san.”

Kokage answered with a smile. She was wearing glasses, well glasses without a degree. The right lens was engraved with a curse mark and also a piece of paper, a talisman, was tied to the vine on the right eye side. Both were measures to temporarily seal Kokage’s curse. There was of course no change in the mysterious spiritual body that possessed her.

“Hey… Let’s go!”

Kakugyoki urges the Lord. Due to many years of habit, he hated being exposed to the public for long periods of time. Hishamaru raised her eyebrows, but Yakō  started walking without worrying about it.

With Kakugyouki in front and with Hishamaru behind, the Tsuchimikado siblings were heading home.

Not mentioning Kakugyouki , who has visited various parts of Japan for a long time, Yakō  and Hisamaru also visited Tokyo several times. Kokage was the only one that came to Tokyo for the first time.

“How’s Tokyo, Kokage?”

“No matter what I say… I still don’t know.”

“But from the spiritual point of view, it's completely different from the village and other towns. Anyway, the flow of people is thick and lively. It has a unique appearance.“

"Well, that may be the case, but that's not the point right now."

She was fascinated by the hustle and bustle of the big city, and it seemed that she couldn't afford to worry about the state of spirit. Her brother laughed at his restless sister's attitude.

"In the past, the capital of Kyoto was like this …  no, the population is not comparable to that time. The imperial capital, Tokyo, is completely a "magic city ” . ”

Yakō , who muttered so, suddenly turned his smiling smile into a sneer.

" …  Well, there are so many disturbing people."

The cool touch contained in the voice is reminiscent of the coldness of a blade. Hishamaru stared at her master's back, but said nothing.

When they got out of the ticket gate, the number of people increased further. Kokage looked like she was at a loss.

Kakugyouki went through the crowd without worrying about it.

“Yakō- aniue! Kokage - anesama!”

A lively voice echoed. Then, while dexterously avoiding the crowds, a boy rushed over.

This was Hisateru, the son of the Kurahashi family. And behind him, it was the head of the family, Takamitsu. Hisateru hugged Yakō 's waist with the momentum of running up, then looked up and said with a big smile.

“Welcome to Tokyo!”

“Hi, Hisateru! It's been a long time since spring. I'm fine …  you don't need to ask.”

“I’ve been waiting for this day, my brother will be staying in Tokyo for two, no, three days, right?”

"Haha. It's not going to be long, but I'll be a nuisance for a while."

With his hand on Hisateru's shoulder, Yakō  looked up at the boy's father. Takamitsu grinned toward the lord, who was far younger than him.

“I think you should consider moving your base to Tokyo. Anyway… head of family, first of all, thank you for your long journey, and Kokage, it was a terrible disaster.”

“Oji-sama, my immaturity is a great inconvenience.

“Stop, Kokage! You have no fault! The first thing we should apologize for is the unsavoury retainers who forgave the bandits, then, that new family head who had vacated the house and walked around early in the inauguration? In any case, it is not for you to worry. I'm doing everything I can to help you. You're going to get on a big boat, and for the time being, take a look at Tokyo. Let Hisateru guide you.”

“Hi, Kokage-nesama! I will guide you everywhere!”

Said Hisateru. Kokage crouched and said “Well, thank you!”.

From Yakō 's point of view, Takamitsu could be regarded as a stubborn relative who had a long-standing temperament and many complaints. However, at the same time, he was one of the few "reliable elders" in his family. That was especially appreciated at times like this one.

“Let’s not stand. Let’s move first. We are preparing with our arms crossed. You can expect a tantrum.”

In  late summer, Tokyo was dyed lightly at the end of the day.

From the window on the second floor, opened to bring in cold air, you could see the street corner across from the side color. The telegraph pole which stood in the tree-four story building was not seen in the country. On the electric wires that crossed the air, birds were resting their wings and cast shadows.

A wide range of roads were paved and black-painted cars came in and out. The clothes of the people who go on the road were different, too.

All the men wore hats with their suits, and the women were light, cool, and many dressed in clean Western clothes.

The scenery was that of an unfamiliar city.

But some were familiar. Although invisible to the eye, the grounds of the mansion were covered by a magical barrier. In addition, there were signs of several shikigami in the premises. There were a variety of types, from those of small use to those guarding the residence. Perhaps, because of this, the house itself was a brick Western-style building, but somehow it had an atmosphere that was connected to the residence of Tsuchimikado. This was also a house of magic, the Kurahashi’s family main residence.

Hishamaru was one of the guests. Unlike the drawing room on the first floor, this room was used by relatives and subordinates. Now, Yakō  and Kokage, Takamitsu and Hisateru, were sitting in chairs across a round table. Hishamaru was near the window, and Kakugyouki was holding his back against the wall. Hishamaru also put out the ears and the tail that were hidden at the command of her master. The wind blowing in from the window from time to time was gently patting the soft fur.

Tea cups were lined up on the table, and tea was steaming. Yakō  advised the shikigami to take a seat, but Kakugyouki remained standing because it was easier for him. Hishamaru was also reluctant to relax at the same table as the Lord, as her buddy was waiting away. He managed to get a firm resignation, and he was trying to put it aside.

The Kurahashi family was a related branch family, but it was not “family”. Where Kurahashi's eyes were, her position as a shikigami should be clarified.

-  Rather than what the Kurahashis do, Yakō -sama is too easy on his shikigami.

She wasn’t going to deny his kindness, however, now that Yakō  was the family head, external “kejime” should be more important than before.

However, Hishamaru was so careful, but sorry glances at her standing were made not only by Yakō  but also by Kokage. Next to that, Hisateru had an unseen gaze of interest towards Kakugyouki. It seemed that there was no choice but to worry about the legendary demon. When his father whispered, "Hisateru." he hurriedly sat down again.

"Um …  Kokage-aneue? It's your first time in Tokyo? How is it? Do you like it? ”

Hisateru said a line similar to Yakō , perhaps trying to show a grown-up side.

Kokage responded with a gentle smile, "Yes, that's right."

"I was surprised that it was much more lively than I expected because Japan should be at war on the continent right now and I haven't heard much good stories these days, so I thought the capital city of Tokyo had a darker atmosphere.”

"Don’t worry about that kind of thing , aneue, Japan is the land of gods. It may be a bit of a struggle, but we're going to win in the end. There's no way a prosperous imperial army will be behind another country."

Hisateru replied with a clear answer.

After all, Japan had never lost in war. Although there were many domestic wars, they have never suffered a decisive defeat in external and international wars, from the old crown to the new Sino-Japanese War, Russo-Japanese War, and the previous World War. Of course, the role of Bunroku and Keicho, the so-called korean troops have been withdrawn by the Japanese side, but the biggest cause was the death of Hideyoshi Toyotomi. If you don't win, it doesn't mean you're "defeated" .

The country of Japan had built its prosperity by struggling with its mighty enemies many times without giving in. This was proof that Japan was a sanctuary where eight million gods lived, the land of gods. At least that was what Hisateru believed.

Yakō  turned to his father, with a slightly ironic look, not sure it was fine.

Takamitsu shook his shoulders with a slight bitter laugh.

"Well, this is what this kid believes. In fact, not a few people innocently believe that. It's not only him."

" …  Rather, the case of the Onmyoudou came up because there were a certain number of people with similar ideas in the upper ranks of the military."

“It’s not that simple. But, even if it doesn’t hit, it won’t be that far away? I don’t believe that the military is that “pure”.

“Isn’t it a mistake of “ignorance”?”

"I have to admit that the two are often confused in recent years."

Kurahashi responded calmly, with a poisonous tongue.

"Also, in this country, cleanliness and purity are more respected than necessary because of the tendency to avoid injuries. Even blind beliefs based on ignorance can be accepted if they are pure."

"That's not the story of the military, isn't it? The military is the problem."

"The military is a group of Japanese people. Of course, when you look at the individual, you get that impression, but when you look at the whole thing it’s not. Perhaps that spirituality also hinders modernization.”

“Instead, I think that Western thought is easily stained”

"It's just the surface. Or should I say only the part that is convenient for me? However, it is natural. It's been only seventy years since the new. There are not many people who have come into direct contact with the West. When society's consciousness changes, it's not an ordinary thing."

With that said, Kurahashi drinked tea.

Hishamaru listened a little.

-  Society… I don’t get it…

She was a country person. Although she had various experiences following Yakō , she was a little familiar with magic and saw herself as an ordinary person.

On the other hand, the conversation between Yakō  and Takamits was objective and broad-minded. Above all, it does not rely on open-minded public opinion. Hisateru, who was supposed to be the beginning of the story, couldn't keep up with his father's interaction with his beloved Yakō . Kokage also had a troubled face. Perhaps she had a similar look on her face too.

Did she notice the situation around her?

"By the way, Kokage. Tokyo is not unaffected by the war."

Takamitsu continued, with a somewhat shattered tone.

“Now, on the  first day of the month, Kōahōkobi, I have to refrain from enjoying it. It was decided just the other day. For example, not only playgrounds such as billiards, but also cafés in bars are basically closed and it seems to encourage a rough meal of one soup and one dish and a Hinomaru bento.”

"Oh, after all, that's the case. It's hard in the war, so it can't be helped, right?"

"It's more of a relief than saying that it can't be helped … . I think you’re the only one who can laugh like that now. It's already hard to get the kind of favorite items. It will further slow the distribution of goods. "

"Does that mean the war isn't over yet?"

"It's not over. It's getting worse than it is."

Kokage's expression was clouded by Takamitsu, who asserts plainly.

Yakō  prefaced.

"I'm not very familiar with it."

"The political situation has changed a lot in the last half month, right? The war has begun again in Europe."

"Oh, that's going to be a big deal."

At Yakō 's question, Takamitsu was very heavy.

August 23rd. Germany announced the conclusion of a non-aggression treaty with the Soviet Union as Japan continued to fight Soviet forces near Nomonhan on the Manchurian border.

The Japanese government and the military were stunned by this. After all, Japan and Germany had a Japan-Germany defense agreement, so to speak, they were allies. Furthermore, the Axis  Alliance, which strengthens relations between the  three  countries into a military alliance, was proposed by the german side, and the government and military had been arguing for a long time about whether or not they would accept the proposal.

The sudden action of Germany was said to be a brilliant attack of the blue sky exactly for Japan because it shelved it unilaterally, and it teamed up with the Soviet Union which was in the state of combat with Japan. In fact, the Cabinet has since resigned, leaving a statement that "the european heavens and the earth are a complex mystery."

Then, on September 1st, Germany started marching across the Polish border. Two days later, Poland's allies Britain and France declared war on Germany. Of course, the Soviet Union should show some movement in the near future.

The war was expanding.

"But is that just Europe?”

"Unfortunately, it's hard to say that it's a fire on the opposite bank. If multiple powers move in this age, it's possible that there will be another global war."

"Do you mean that Japan will be involved?"

"Yes. And Japan's relations with Britain and the United States are getting worse now. Moreover, if a global war begins with Germany and the Soviet Union joining hands, it's no longer a four-sided song. However, when the war begins, it is doubtful how effective the non-invasion treaty is."

The Kurahashi family was informed because they had strong ties to the political and business world. Perhaps they've heard information that newspaper reports didn't convey. His eyes on international affairs were calm, and his analysis was far from optimistic public opinion.

"To be honest, Japan's diplomacy is poor. Compared to the Western powers, the experience points are too different. But that's why it can't be helped. I want to set my position in the international community as soon as possible."

" …  I don't know. The military still seems to be messed up inside."

Yakō  muttered.

It was a small implication. Hishamaru regained her fox's ears, which she had tilted. Takamitsu also immediately guesses and responds.

"Is this the case?"

"I've heard from Sōma -kun, but …  it seems like he's a competitor."

"If you believe him."

"If it's still unclear if it's true, at least it's not a lie. There's no reason to lie, and if this is Sōma 's tactic, it's too roundabout. Kurahashi is also exploring, but well, that's what he guessed."

Takamitsu responded frankly to Yakō , who dared to speak cautiously. Kokage's expression was a little stiff, perhaps because she found out that she had moved on to a topic that was relevant to her.

Satsuki immediately contacted Yakō  and apologized for the sweetness of Sōma 's side when he learned that not only the dark temple but also Tsuchimikado's mansion had been attacked that night. On top of that, he explained to Yakō  and Takamitsu about the circumstances he had laid down at that time.

According to Satsuki, it seems that Sōma 's hostile faction inside the army attacked the dark temple and the Tsuchimikado family's mansion the other day. They were fighting with Sōma  over the initiative to rebuild the Onmyoudou, and the assailants are said to be the ones they guided behind the scenes.

There was no evidence, but there was no doubt. Satsuki confirmed it.

After that, Satsuki returned to Tokyo and was still exploring the movement of hostile factions.

Meanwhile, Yakō  and his colleagues proceeded to analyze the magic that was cast on  Kokage in the village.

That night, the operative that attacked Tsuchimikado's mansion used the " sign ", and Kokage unfortunately saw it. "I saw it with my right eye." As a result, she was possessed by the mysterious spirit body called by it.

The caster who used the sign  was arrested, but the caster did not understand the sign he used. It seems that he used it but wasn’t the one who prepared it. By the way, he asked Shinra to check with the intruder of North Star Temple, but it was similar. They were probably "disposable" operators hired for money, as Satsuki threw up that evening.

Fortunately, to date, Kokage's possessing spirit hasn't seemed to harm her. Probably because there was no one to instruct and it was in a waiting state. However, this spirit body seemed to be connected to someone. He is always reporting the whereabouts and condition of the possessed subject to someone, perhaps the true caster who prepared this.

Yakō  created the spectacles that Kokage was now wearing to seal off the effects. While wearing these glasses, the spirit possessing Kokage cannot recognize her. However, this was a temporary measure and was not a fundamental solution. Even if the spiritual body could not be recognized, Kokage was still "possessed". In the end, there was no choice but to dispel this technique and take over the spirit body.

It wasn’t an easy task. However, with some time, the curse could be dispelled. That was Yakō 's idea.

However, he didn't know how long it would actually take until he tried it. Also, if he got rid of the spirit in that way, he would lose the clue to reach the spellcaster who prepared this "sign of the priest".

- Yakō -sama, if this is the end of the matter …  If you never have a chance to see the spellcaster over there, you might have chosen to concentrate on dispelling it …

There was no guarantee that he would withdraw. Rather, it was a person who bothered to make the spirit body possessed. Even if Tsuchimikado withdrew from this matter, it was possible that he would still interfere.

Then what would they do?

Regardless of the inside of the army or the reconstruction of the Onmyoudou, only this spell and the spellcaster are directly struck. That was certain.

That is why it was combined with today's move to Tokyo.

"Anyway, Sōma  has a strong influence on the upper management, so why do you have competitors?"

" Sōma  doesn't dominate the army. Even if it's influential, it's limited. Rather, it's out of the mainstream of power."

"Then it wouldn't be a power struggle."

"There is a sidestream conflict in the sidestream. Also, the victory or defeat may be related to the superiority or inferiority of the mainstream. I mentioned it as pure, but on the other hand, the military organization is also the Fukumaden. There are various political dynamics working inside."

Takamitsu briefly explained to the skeptical Yakō . Then, he stared at the head, who scratched his head, "Is it politics in the army?" With a gentle face while smiling.

"It seems like you’re still not good at it. However, you are now the head of the Tsuchimikado family. Please be a little careful in that direction as well."

Takamitsu said so, but in reality he wouldn't have any political expectations for the young head.

Takamitsu was the most noisy of all relatives for Yakō 's ruggedness and freedom.

But, in fact, he had never tried to stop Yakō , even though he may complain.

"In the end, “talent” is “bias”."

Was a word that Takamitsu gave in front of Hishamaru a long time ago.

Takamitsu, unusually drunk, forgot what happened. "That talent is huge and pure, but its hugeness and purity consist of extreme 'bias' at the expense of other qualities. At least, there is such a side. Then, the fault of that should actually be the beauty fortune-telling one which supports the genius. What do you do by force to level it? If it's not enough, it's all you have to do to make up for it. It is nothing but fost, such as let's take down the person who is in the far height which cannot be reached to the ordinary husband to the height of the mediocre husband just because it cannot be reached. Don't you think so, Hishamaru?"

Takamitsu and Hisamaru are by no means close friends. Rather, Takamitsu often pays attention to Yakō 's treatment of Hishamaru, so it can be said that Hishamaru has a strong sense of weakness. Even Takamitsu has rarely tried to imitate him by talking to Hishamaru, even if he doesn't give special treatment.

For that reason, the line that Takamitsu, who happened to be alone at that time, said was very impressive.

In fact, Takamitsu, as he said at the time, fully supports him in the political aspects that Yakō  is not good at. He wouldn't tell him, but for Takamitsu, Yakō  was the head of Tsuchimikado, who can be proud of himself as the Kurahashi family owner.

- Maybe …

It may be none other than Takamitsu who recognizes and loves Yakō 's talent the most. "Anyway, we have to leave the faction conflict within the army to Sōma  and do what we can."

"Is it really okay to leave it to me?"

"If you're worried, you can cooperate. Sōma…  Rather, Lieutenant Sōma  Satsuki's position is a bit complicated."

" …  Is there a discrepancy between the position in the army and the position in the clan?"

When Yakō  points out, Takamitsu smiles invincibly, wondering what he knows.

"He is a lieutenant as well as the head of Sōma . Many of his superiors are clan members, and the facts are known to some extent around him. And above all, he is still young. Being young in the organization can be a factor in making an enemy. Do you have any idea about that?"

" … "

Yakō  silently did not respond to the teasing line of Takamitsu. He reached for a tea cup and poured a little cold tea.

"He also appears at night. Let's decide the next setup there."

When Takamitsu told him, Yakō  remained silent. Hishamaru shook her tail softly and quietly, staring at the Lord.

Satsuki visited Kurahashi's house just before midnight.

"I'm sorry for the night. I was unexpectedly late."

"Did something go wrong?"

"No. In this case, the problem is that there is nothing."

Apparently, he was busy investigating the case of the curse, but he ended up missing. After greeting Takamitsu, Satsuki sarcastically bent his lips toward Yakō , who was beside him.

"I made an effort to make a nice report for the Tsuchimikado head. It ’s not a good result."

" …  No problem, but the unexpected delay was due to the movement of the enemy, right? It’s because we came to Tokyo."

"Hmm. It's a good guess. That’s probably right."

"Hey, wait a moment, Yakō ? The spirit that possessed Kokage should be sealed. Why is your location known?"

"This time, Yakō 's move to Tokyo wasn't a secret. You can tell if you keep an eye on Tokyo Station… That's what Yakō -dono said … "

"Oh. To tell the truth, I loosened the Kokage seal a little in advance. They knew I was in Tokyo."

Takamitsu was amazed when Yakō  revealed it calmly.

" …  Did you dare to provoke the other side? I guess Kokage knows."

"Of course I agree. Well, as Lieutenant Sōma  said, I didn't get the expected reaction. That person is unexpectedly cautious."

"If he’s really cautious, I don't think he'll launch such an attack."

As soon as Satsuki's visit, the three talked to each other without moving from the front door. Hishamaru, who couldn't see it, called "Takamitsu-sama!" and Takamitsu hurriedly led them all to the reception room on the first floor.

The reception room on the first floor was larger than the rooms on the second floor, and the interior was luxurious, however, it wasn’t as beautiful, but it was well organized. Surprisingly, this area may have been Takamitsu's hobby.

The reception room was intentionally created in the center, with sofas, chairs, and side tables near the walls. Yakō , Satsuki, and Takamitsu sat in appropriate places, and Hishamaru stood beside the door near the entrance.

Both Kokage and Hisateru were already sleeping. In addition, Kakugyouki was on guard outdoors. As Yakō  said earlier, he invited today the enemy that set up the "night attack" on the mansion of Tsuchimikado and the dark temple. It wasn’t sure if there wouldn’t be a third time.

"It's hard to imagine that he would attack here. It's in the middle of the city, facing the main street. It's different from the village of Tsuchimikado and the mountain temple. Besides, the Kurahashi family is a well-known family. It has a bigger presence in Tokyo than the mid-retired Tsuchimikado family. Even if you pretend to be a thief, you shouldn't be able to deal with it."

" … "

"What is it, Yakō -dono? Do you have an objection?"

"Has Lieutenant Soma been talking to Takamitsu-san for a long time?"

" …  It doesn't matter now."

Satsuki glares at Yakō  with an irritated face. Hishamaru just laughed. Then suddenly:

- Speaking of which…

That's what Takamitsu said earlier.

Satsuki was in a complicated  position. He came by car, a private car. Perhaps it was Sōma 's man who was driving, but the car left. Satsuki was the only one who entered the mansion.

Not only that night, Satsuki was always alone. It may have been normal for a young lieutenant, he was the clan's head and was not accompanied. He was always acting alone. It might have been his external "consideration".

“Ggghhmm”, Takamitsu cleared his throat.

"Let's reconfirm the current situation. Sōma -kun, is it okay?"

"Yes, that's not a big deal. Originally, the establishment of a research institute for magic was a plan that Sōma , who had permeated the military, had warmed up for many years. However, the path to realization was not concretely  seen. After all, it's "magic". Objectively, t here are many mistakes. No matter how credible people are, it was a difficult field for the military to formally focus on."

Satsuki talked plainly.

"But …  you continued by yourself. ”

"A spellcaster …  a genius who had "persuasiveness" to magic. Sōma 's plans began to seem possible."

That said, Satsuki's line of sight extended to Yakō .

"In short, Yakō -dono. The return of Abe no Seimei, who appeared in the O nmyoudou  sect of Tsuchimikado supposed to be dead, Tsuchimikado Yakō . His reputation swept the magical world over time and one dream of Sōma  reemerges. It was the reconstruction of the abandoned Onmyoudou. With the young genius of Tsuchimikado as a pillar, he would gather expectations and money from the upper army with his talent. He was perfect for achieving Sōma 's purpose. The solution was unexpectedly visible."

"It's terrible. Isn't it terrible to leave it to others?"

"Oh, Sōma-san , you intended to behave in a big way? After all, we'll take care of all the settings. The restoration of O nmyoudou  should be a long-cherished wish for Tsuchimikado. If so, rebuilding the Onmyoudou must be an offer that you wouldn't even hope for, such as a story.”

He had no choice but to laugh, Satsuki squeezed his shoulders.

Hishamaru secretly convinced him.

When explained in that way, there was a reason for Soma's argument. Rather, it was a valid view. In fact, if Sōma  had been negotiating with "Tsuchimikado", things might have gone well.

But when they visited, "Tsuchimikado" became " Yakō -sama. ”

A young new head who loved magic more than anyone and was fooled by magic, but gives up on the future.

Hishamaru gently asked for the Lord's complexion. Yakō  frowned annoyingly. In the life of the Lord, it was not uncommon for people to expect one-sidedly. And in such cases, the desires of the expecting side are usually selfish.

"In the end, Sōma 's plan was stalled, but some saw it as an opportunity. That's the opponent this time around."

In Satsuki's explanation, Takamitsu slams with yeah.

"I heard that you are a competitor, but does that mean that you are also a military person? Is that also related to magic?"

"Yes, that's right. It's a faction within the General Staff Headquarters, led by Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi. I'm wondering if you've already heard this, but this is a faction dispute. Of course, there are many enemies."

" …  Who is that lieutenant colonel? Is it a magician?"

Yakō  asked. Satsuki agrees with "Oh".

"It seems to be a former Shugendo, but he seems to have stayed. The problem is not so much the skill of the individual, but his wide network of contacts. The mountain where he was, was the training ground of the so-called back magic people, and there is quite a face. In the present age, it seems to surround a lot of evil sorcerers who have been devoured."

"Is it like the dark temple?"

"I wonder if it's similar. I'm sure there was no interaction with the dark temple. Rather, if you know more about that temple, you can't set up such a sloppy night attack. Even for minions of Debuchi, they are not practitioners, but thugs who use magic."

" …  It's strange. How did those guys get the "Sign of the Priest"?

"Even if his minions are thugs, I don't know how far his network has grown. It's possible that he had a weird connection and the spells came in. Of course, just because we don't know the back there is a possibility that a skillful spellcaster is hiding in."

"It's vague. Well, I went to Tokyo to find out."

Yakō  sloppily buried himself in a chair, throwing his legs out and looking up at the ceiling, looking at the curse through the light. Takamitsu bitterly coughed, but he didn't seem to notice at all. Hishamaru, who was watching silently, shook her pot without making a noise, sighing inwardly.

Takamitsu gave up and shook his head then turned to Satsuki.

"But …  I can't believe it. I wonder if a person in the army would do something wrong with the darkness?"

"Debuchi himself hasn't come out to the scene. He just turned his hand behind the scenes. Given that, this kind of back-office work can be said to be the normal work of the General Staff. If you do something a little crazy, the top will be manipulated. "

"What? Then do you know the upper management?"

"Are you talking about our power struggle? That's right. Even if you say the upper level, the "upper" in this case is Lieutenant General Yano of the General Staff Headquarters."

"Him? I've met him before. Rumor has it that he's a pretty sharp guy."

"It's a raccoon dog. He is an outsider to magic, but he really understands its effectiveness. He knows the value of magic as a technique, not because of his devotion. Thanks to that, the reconstruction of the Onmyoudou itself is very active, but if anything, he shoulders Debuchi’s faction. From us, Sōma , it is easier to give and see. Of course, I won't give up on that."

" …  I see, it's like a songwriter." (*?)

Takamitsu stroked his mustache with his fingertips while folding his arms.

Yakō  was tired.

"A lieutenant general to a lieutenant colonel? If you're asking me something, it's full of enemies, right, lieutenant?"

"In the sense of a magic research promotion group, both Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi and Lieutenant General Yano are our allies."

"If allies are competing with each other, there is no more help."

"Shaking hands with your right hand and hitting each other with your left hand is the real thrill of adult quarrel."

Satsuki returns a bad smile. Hishamaru's ears moved suddenly. After all, he is basically a man who doesn't like it. Hishamaru snorts a little.

It seems that Yakō  has finally closed his mouth, but soon.

"Whatever."

He tightened his expression and sat back in the chair.

Satsuki and Takamitsu payed attention to Yakō .

Yakō  was, of course:

"I understand the background of the matter. On top of that, I would like to clarify Tsuchimikado's position. First of all, our purpose is not a faction conflict in the military, nor is it the reconstruction of the Onmyoudou or the promotion of magic research. It's Kokage's possession drop. To that end, we find and catch the man who came up with that technique. Sōma  can think of cooperating to accomplish Tsuchimikado's purpose, not because of their own circumstances."

It was a plain but strong and solemn voice. The Lord made these statements when he was "serious."

In a sense, Takamitsu put aside Sōma , saying, " Yakō , that is … " However, Satsuki won Takamitsu. "Of course." and the head of Sōma  replied immediately.

“In this case, Sōma  also has a fault. Let's promise that we will do our best regardless of the circumstances here. However, aside from the onmyoudou and magic research, there is a possibility that we will be involved in faction conflicts."

"If it becomes an obstacle in the process of achieving the purpose, there is no way. Anyway, as far as I can tell, the first thing I want to investigate is his private army-magician group who says that the lieutenant colonel will follow him. It may be true that it's mostly roaring, but my guess is that there's probably a magician at the core of the group."

"Apart from Debuchi?"

"Yes. Just as the lieutenant carried me, the lieutenant colonel may have brought someone."

"I see. If you're a new face, it's understandable that you don't have any information. But why do you think so?”

"I have learned a little about the “Sign of Priest”."

Said Yakō , showing the curse he had in his hand.

"First of all, the spells contained in this curse have a double structure, and each spell is likely to have been created by another caster."

"Another magician?

"Yes. The composition and context of the art are totally different. Both are really original. However, the one with the highest degree of perfection is the underlay. It is simple but exquisite, and before it is called a curse, it is a kind of form. And the other spell that was added later is incorporated in a form that makes use of the original characteristics of such a curse, and weaves the spell as a whole. The spellcaster under Lieutenant Colonel Fuchi obtained the "Sign of the Priest" in some way and used it to create a new sign."

The young o nmyouji explained fluently, fluttering and swaying the sign.

"So, at this time, the original source of this sign and the creator of the Kokage sign are considered separately. Of course, we should pursue the latter. And the magician who devised the sign controls it. It's definitely a Shinto art. It's probably a form close to folk beliefs. There should be little interaction with other schools. However, it's not a new religion that came out yesterday-today, but its history. I think it is a school with a track record."

" …  It's quite specific."

"First of all, as I said earlier, I don't know who he or she is, but the magic he handles is very unique. This is a characteristic of the indigenous folk religion magic system. If you have a chance to learn some magic, it will be a little similar, but as a practical magic, there is "ripe". In other words, this school has been secretly researching without appearing on the table for many years… I mean, it's like a clan that was suddenly invaded by the military recently, Lieutenant . "

Yakō  said with a laugh, Satsuki put a weave between his eyebrows and said, "Stop it."

"But …  I see, it's persuasive. When I think about it again, the spellcaster is not stopping Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi, but is responsible for the attack on the dark temple. Was it witnessed and carried up?"

"There’s more. The technique  of this school is summoning ."

Hisamaru had already been told by the Lord about the speculation around that. On the other hand, Satsuki and Takamitsu quickly hardened their expressions.

The summoning wa s a type of necromancy. In famous places, there wa s such a group , but they we re said to bring in the souls of the dead and communicate with the will of the people.

In other words.

" …  Is it the kind of dead spirit that is fooling my sister?"

"Oh. I avoid assertions, but at least it's similar. The guy who made that sign manipulates the soul of a person. In Tsuchimikado, there is the "Taizan Fukun Ritual”, but it's "miscellaneous". However, it can be said that it is an "easy" technique. It's only because there is a "curse", but I think this is quite a threat."

Satsuki exchanged a keen eye with Takamitsu. They confirmed each other's thoughts, but it seemed that neither of them came up with it.

Spells related to souls are not uncommon. Rather, it may be said that it is the right path of magic. But on the other hand, many of the "soul" spells have extremely ambiguous effects. Therefore, it is also a field with many "mistakes". Even among sorcerers, it was used to hear the topic of "it" in half.

However, when it comes to "genuine", there is no doubt that the magician's ability is at a considerable level.

-  The enemy's ability is real…

She couldn’t let her guard down. Kokage's safety  was at stake. Hishamaru secretly burned her fighting spirit in her heart.

Satsuki muttered to himself.

"A Shinto that is strong against humming …  Maybe it's from the Tohoku region.”

" …  Kurahashi, let's find out immediately. But when that happens, I'm finally worried about Kokage."

"The spectacles are working well, and I'm always watching the possessing spirits. It should be safe for the time being. But… there are many parts of the original technique that have not been clarified yet."

With that said, Yakō  stared at the spell in his hand.

Since Tsuchimikado was attacked and Kokage was possessed, Yakō  has been sparingly trying to unravel the technique while sleeping. However, the first spell in the sign was so difficult that it made Yakō  hold his head.

"And Tokyo is, so to speak, an enemy land. I don't know when the magician over there will interfere with the spiritual body. After all, let's find the enemy magician as soon as possible. First …  It feels bad to be left alone."

Part 2

The mastermind of the hostile forces was Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi, and given his identity, the background investigation should not be too difficult. Hishamaru and others thought so, but unexpectedly, the investigation did not proceed.

The General Staff Headquarters seemed to be busy with the european circumstances. In addition, it was said that Nomonhan was desperately trying to put an end to the growing turmoil due to a number of misunderstandings. Inevitably, it was not the case when in a faction dispute. Satsuki hasn't been able to visit Kurahashi's house since then. According to Takamitsu, he was running east and west.

"But that's also a story within the General Staff."

Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi's group of magicians was his private army. It may have been favored by the military, but it did not belong to it.

Also, Yakō  wasn't just waiting. With the cooperation of Kurahashi, he continued to collect various information. In particular, Kakugyouki, who was in Tokyo until last year and has a good sense of land, was also asked to investigate the "Sign of the Priest".

"I didn't want to complicate the story, so I gave priority to Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi's magician, but …  To tell the truth, I was a little worried about the source of the sign."

The more he looked up the sign, Yakō  couldn't help but think of "a certain onmyouji" that he had heard from Kakugyouki before. Kakugyouki himself didn't remember the sign, but he seemed to be wondering if it had something to do with it.

"Even if it's irrelevant, the onmyouji seems to be very familiar with the behind-the-scenes developments of the magical world. Meeting them may provide useful information."

That's why Kakugyouki was now following the Lord's command and looking for his old acquaintance, the "onmyouji", alone. He hasn't found him yet, but he brought back various information in the process.

Hishamaru could not help but feel inferior to her partner, who was still relied on mainly. But on the other hand, she also understood that while Kakugyouki was absent, her responsibility would increase. Moreover, in the words of the master, this was an enemy land. She couldn't let her guard down even for a while.

She had a feeling of tightness, but Yakō , who wa s the key, went around Tokyo every day with Kokage and Hisateru without much tension. Of course, she knew he was trying to lure the enemy, however, when she saw him shopping in Ginza with Hisateru, and seeing Kabuki today and Yose tomorrow, her inspiration became a little empty.

However, it may be better than Kokage, a brave girl who had decided to put herself in danger for her brother and for the sake of her family, became depressed by her brother's tourist mood every day. At the end, she reopened and was just enjoying the sights of Tokyo.

"I'm sorry, and I hope you'll have to stretch your wings. Even if something happens anyway, your brother will do something about it."

However, the misleading remarks may be a sign of trust in her brother. Hishamaru laughed back at Kokage.

Kokage's unconscious sense of trust in her brother, Hishamaru wanted to be part of that trust, the shikigami of Yakō . With Hishamaru, she could trust her brother even more. She wanted to be in a position that seemed like that. No, it had to be.

Anyway, it's been a few days since they came to Tokyo. Aside from the many military forces, Yakō  and his colleagues had a peaceful day like the eyes of a storm.

That day too.

"Onii-sama. There is a movie I want to watch today."

After lunch, Kokage, wearing the glasses, asked her brother.

He was completely enjoying Tokyo. "That's unexpectedly bigger than mine." was Yakō 's secretly sneaky sister's evaluation, but it may not be wrong.

However, Satsuki contacted him on that day for the first time in a while. Moreover, it was a rare telegram. He came urgently. At first glance, Yakō  received it and said, "Oh."

"I wonder if this is …  I'm sorry, Kokage. The movie is coming again. We won’t leave the mansion today. Hishamaru, can I leave Kokage to you?"

"Please wait, Yakō -sama. Are you going to go alone?"

"No. I don't know what it will be like. I'll bring back Kakugyouki."

Yakō , said while reading the telegram. Hishamaru, bit her lips after receiving her master’s instructions.

It's natural to have an escort on Kokage's side, but Satsuki admitted that the Kurahashi family's mansion was unlikely to be attacked. That's what Yakō  wanted from Hishamaru, to deal with his sister for declining the movie invitation.

As far as Yakō 's personal safety was concerned, as long as Kakugyouki was attached, there was no problem. Then, in order not to disturb Kokage, she was the right person in the right place to remain on her side.

However…

"Oh. If we don't go to see the movie, I'd love to read a book. There are a lot of books I don't know in Kurahashi's mansion, so you don't have to stay by my side, Hisha."

Kokage said bluntly. Hishamaru suddenly turned around and winked in a way that made him think. She blushed, feeling like she had been seen through.

"Ah, ah, Kokage-sama. I never dislike Kokage-sama's escort, rather it is an honor!?"

"Yes, yes. I know. I already know the enthusiasm of Hisha, but I don't want to be swayed all the time next to me reading a book."

As Kokage says, Hishamaru finally turned her face red. Yakō  finally noticed the state of the shikigami and scratched his head with a bitter smile.

"Hmm …  well, I don't know when Kakugyouki's guy will come back. I'll just tell him to go back to the mansion. Hishamaru you go with me."

"But … Yakō -sama. Then the problem … "

"No. Get ready. I have some things to do before I leave."

As if shy, Yakō  commanded bluntly.

In the end, Hishamaru prepared with the Lord and was sent off by Kokage, who had a big smile, and left Kurahashi's house.

 ?

The telegram specified a restaurant called "Tamura" in Nihonbashi.

It was a sukiya-style sake shop. She wasn’t familiar with this kind of place, but even so, Hishamaru has visited several times with Yakō 's companion guided by Takamitsu. Time was ticking. It was still a little early for this area to be crowded. When Yakō  arrived at the store, they were immediately guided to the back.

Naturally, the ears and the tail were hidden. Hishamaru explored the spirit of the store as she crossed the corridor behind the Lord.

For the time being, she didn't feel any suspicious signs. Shortly after, they were passed through the tatami room at the back of the store.

It was a Japanese-style room that was smaller than expected, but had gorgeous furnishings, a horizontally long table in the center. A customer was sitting on the upper seat.

A man in an old-fashioned suit. He had a gray Kaiser beard and gray hair. However, he didn't look like an old man. He was in his fifties at most. Contrary to his tight body and pins and his straight spine, he had a gentle face and wore round glasses.

Yakō  looked at the man and lifted his eyebrows lightly. Hishamaru also glanced at him and was about to get ready.

-  This…!]

Immediately, Yakō  raised his arm slightly so that only Hisamaru could see. Hishamaru immediately extinguished her agitation and pretended to be calm.

He didn't know how far such a master-slave exchange was transmitted to the other party. However, when the man saw Yakō  enter the room, he smiled while sitting.

"Tsuchimikado Yakō , right?"

"Are you his Excellency General Yano?"

"Oh. I thought I wasn't surprised, but I already knew it. Maybe it's your magical technique?"

"No. It's just a guess. And I don't think your Excellency was willing to hide it."

"Hahaha. I see, it's a very clever word. You're right. Sit down, you in the back too. Don't hesitate."

The man, Yano, also called out to Hishamaru, who was behind.

He was  a friendly and cheerful person. However, the way of talking put quiet pressure on the words "I already knew". Yakō  took the initiative and sat across from Yano. Hishamaru sat down gently, diagonally behind him.

She was gazing at Yano silently and observing carefully. Yano didn't seem to care about Hisamaru's line of sight, perhaps because he was accustomed to being seen by others.

"It's one way or the other, but maybe it's a great one."

Before leaving Kurahashi's house, Yakō  said such a line. In other words, the telegram that arrived at the mansion was an invitation from Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi or Lieutenant General Yano, and probably the latter. It seemed that he didn't even think of fragments from Satsuki himself. Sure, Satsuki wouldn't do this at this time of the year. Also, even the side who sent the telegram must have been half aware that this was a camouflage.

The "movement" of the enemy that has been waiting. The problem was that aim, but it was Lieutenant General Yano who came into contact with him, and when it came to a secret visit at a restaurant, he had some expectations.

"Frankly, we're in a beehive-like fuss right now. Not just the General Staff, but the entire Imperial Headquarters."

"I'm asking. It seems that there are days when my acquaintances can't go home."

"Um. The same thing as the previous world war may happen again. We must work together to decide the direction Japan should take in the future. That is urgent. But that is the case. It's easy to move on. Opinions are still divided. It’s a noisy state!

"Thank you for your patience."

"To tell the truth, I want it right now."

"What is that?"

"It will be decided. The magical unit, the "experimental unit" that Debuchi and Sōma  are chanting."

" … "

Yakō  avoided giving a prompt answer when the maid came into the room at that time, probably at the instruction of Yano. After preparing each tea on the table, she left the room without saying anything. During that time, both remained silent. Hishamaru kept observing Yano all that time.

The frank and unadorned wording creates a person who was rigid but familiar.

According to Satsuki and Takamitsu, Yano was a cut-out person, a raccoon dog, and a musician. In other words, he was a person who should not be judged only by the impression of the surface. In fact, he felt a slight high-pressure mixture in the passages. It was an atmosphere that naturally tries to stand on top of people.

However, Hishamaru was not observing the figure of Yano.

" …  I have read all the plans they have submitted."

Yano resumed talking.

"Well, even in the experimental stage, the existence of a unit that can actually move will be effective in spreading the "new technology" of magic. However, if it is really possible to create a magic unit that can be used at the level they are advocating. If so, its true value is first and foremost as an "intelligence agent" and as an "operator"."

Yano's facial expression and voice tone have changed. In addition, Hishamaru also concentrated on the story.

Yano continued.

"Intelligence, counterintelligence, information manipulation, sabotage, and assassination. If these missions could be performed by magic, this would be tremendous. After all, to prevent, of course, to sense. Even difficult. In Western countries that rely on scientific civilization, they can't compete at all."

" …  I'm saying, there are spells from other countries, and I think there are spells that have been introduced to the land. There will also be new movements. In fact, magic and mysticism are being reviewed in Germany, I hear."

"If so, we have to hurry even more. We need to secure a magical advantage ahead of other countries."

" …  to another country?"

When Yakō  dared to confirm, Yano grinned happily.

"Yes, but are you curious?"

"Opinions are divided, right?"

" …  Hmm. It's easy to understand and not help. Of course, if you help, it's better than that."

Yano replied leisurely. Yakō  smiled very faintly. Contrary to each other's calm attitude, the air was tense.

-  This guy …

Hishamaru couldn't stop her facial expression from becoming steep.

Yano presented magical intelligence and crafting activities, which  was a way to operate as a spy. What's more, he said "I want it right now" because "opinions are divided". It suggested that the scope of activity he expected of the magical unit was not limited to foreign countries. Rather, he said he wanted to use magical units to gather opinions within the “current” army.

-  Do you intend to treat Yakō-sama  as a hand soldier who will take the helm in your own army?

Though resentingly  Hishamaru unable to answer if it was different from what was given by Sōma  and Kurahashi.

No, she didn't want to answer, she knew it. Whether it's Sōma  or Yano, there was no difference in the essence of what they wanted from Yakō . Only the standing position was different. Becoming a civilian employee may more or less include "that meaning".

That's why Yakō  stubbornly avoided being used by the military.

“One word, your excellency. Spells are by no means all-purpose. Also, whether you are an intelligence agent or an agent, you need specialized knowledge and skills to be useful. It’s not something that can be imitated every morning.”

"It's enough to make you think you can, Tsuchimikado."

Yano had a calm attitude and gently denied it.

"People, when they see the possibilities, believe somewhere in their hearts, no matter how they make decisions with their heads. What is important is the "persuasive power" for that purpose. Isn't the reason why magic is accompanied by exaggerated rituals, after all, to "convince" people?"

" …  It's more of a religious field."

"Hmm. By the way, the difference between the two was also mentioned in the plan. However, it is the same from the viewpoint of human mind manipulation. Rather, ancient magic was with devotion. The affinity will be high. I think it should be used."

" …  I admire your insight. You are already an excellent magician."

"Hahaha. It is an honor to be endorsed by the Onmyoudou sect."

Hishamaru sweats at the exchange between her master and Yano.

Yakō 's folly had the bluntness that would have been unbearable if Takamitsu was present. Of course, Yano should have guessed Yakō 's attitude, but he was holding it calmly without changing his complexion.

-  Is this also "politics"?

Yano felt that he was better than Yakō  in terms of "the ability to organize and handle people”. It was something different from the trust that Takamitsu had.

"Now, let's get into the main subject. As I said earlier, we are very enthusiastic and need urgent results. Therefore, we do not want any extra conflict. Rather, I have to shape it as soon as possible. So I would like to ask you again for your cooperation."

" …  I should have already told Lieutenant Sōma  the answer."

"The situation has changed. That's why you came to Tokyo, right? And if you have a problem now, I can solve it right away."

" …  What exactly is the solution going to be?"

"It's easy. All you have to do is give orders."

"So Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi obeys?"

"That's the army."

Yano says plainly and puts his mouth to the hot water. Hishamaru diverted her eyes, in line with the tea-drinking behavior.

Without changing his expression, Yakō :

"What happens to Sōma  in that case?"

"I'm saying to betray Sōma . If you cooperate, it's not uncommon to collect Sōma ."

"But Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi will not agree."

"Adjustments will be needed, but I just have to steer. After all, the very situation of Sōma  or Debuchi has led to a delay in the plan. Also, you came to Tokyo. The problem is here, so it shouldn't be a bad story to join hands with me and break through the status quo together."

Yano kept smiling. Rather than loosening, the pressure was increasing. Finally Hishamaru noticed. In other words, this is the kind of force that turns "adults" to "children ” .

Yakō  closed his eyes once.

And quietly,

"Your Excellency, first of all, I'm very sorry, but I have no intention of working as an intelligence agent under you."

Yano's smile was still present even after the refusal.

"I think you can understand…"

The pressure increased as he said.

“Regardless, “this” is not just a request for cooperation. I advise you, but it’s just going to be a hassle, right?”

It wasn't said in a bad tone, it was just a "guidance". In fact, this is just a kind teaching for Yano. To young people who are talented but do not know the world, the military is telling them to listen carefully because the world is like this. How tolerant he was to a cheeky young man, or maybe Yano really thought so.

As expected, Yakō  laughed.

Whether Yano noticed that the head of the Tsuchimikado family, who maintained his "gratitude" until the last minute, was the last to smile.

"Secondly."

Innocently, Yakō  continue d .

"It seems that His Excellency is a little annoyed by his stagnation or light oversight. I see, I can only sell fights to Tsuchimikado. I have to give back."

Yano changed his expression for the first time. "What?" Frows suspiciously.

That was the time. Hishamaru quickly cast her gaze at the entrance of the room. Immediately after, a man called from the other side of the sliding door, which was closed as "Your Excellency." When Yano replies, "What?", A young man opens the sliding door and enters the room.

The man crouched beside Yano and quickly heard something.

Yano becomes frowned upon.

" …  Is Satake?"

She heard a voice leaking back.

Apparently, there was an unintended visitor. Moreover, she remembered the name Satake. Certainly, Colonel Satake must have been one of the Sōma  clan in the General Staff, which Satsuki had previously spoken at the Dark Temple.

And it seems that Yakō  followed the same thought as Hishamaru.

"It looks like a visitor, your Excellency. We should leave." He said, and he sat up without stopping. Yano bitterly bent his lips.

" …  Tsuchimikado-kun, let me be clear, the result will not change. Rather, it will get worse. Time is regrettable. Will you bother me?"

"Yes. Thank you for inviting me, Your Excellency. It was very helpful. Thank you."

As if Yano's line had not been heard, he bowed and left the room. Of course, Hishamaru also bowed and immediately followed. It was a form of crushing the face of Yano, but it should be seen that he had already exhausted his "gratitude".

Above all, they had to prepare for the next move.

" … Yakō -sama."

"Hishamaru, how do you see it?"

"I’m sure it is the same technique."

"That’s right. Then, if done well, it's just before, or … "

Cross the corridor to the entrance of the restaurant. It should be an unplanned departure. The maid approached them in a hurry, but after she called out lightly and thanked her, they left the store without dealing with her.

However, when they left the store.

"Oops."

Hishamaru was silent and swift, and Yakō  grinned funny.

It was Satsuki in military uniform who had his back on the wall outside the store. It has a quiet look, but it has an unprecedented swordsman atmosphere.

"Is the direct confrontation with the lieutenant general thrown at Colonel Satake, lieutenant?"

" …  I hate it."

Grumpily throwing it away, Satsuki turned to an unusual, stubborn look. Yakō  blew out involuntarily.

"Don't look at it like that, Lieutenant. Don't worry, I haven't made a secret agreement with Lieutenant General Whitebeard."

" …  Tsuchimikado should do his best to achieve Tsuchimikado's goals. Sōma  will only cooperate, as declared."

"What, Lieutenant, don't be strangely sharp. I apologize for moving without consultation. But honestly, I don't think we were consulting with each other, right?".

"The requirement over there would be an invitation on my side anyway. Are you going to kick me?"

"I'm not interested in the great army."

When Yakō  squeezes his shoulders, Satsuki finally makes an unpleasant look, "Is it the army again?"

"Can't you put up with belonging to the army so much?"

"I said so from the beginning"

"Why? If you are going to be important in this country now, your choices are limited. Or are you seriously going to retire and crush the rest of your life with that youth, that position and that talent?"

At that time, Satsuki had a youthful look for some reason. Pure question and slight irritation. And frustration.

-  That is…

Hishamaru blinked and looked back at Satsuki.

She understood the spirit of Satsuki's words. Because the frustration with the Lord certainly exists in Hishamaru's chest.

Yakō 's innate lack of attachment to "profane". The unyielding attitude that is not commensurate with his age, position, and talent, while understanding that he is, can sometimes be asked "why?".

Yakō  didn't stick to things that would be valuable to many. While being loved by heaven, no, because he was loved, there was no garment. Or that was the reason why he was loved by heaven?

At that time, Hishamaru became familiar with Satsuki for the first time.

However,

" Yakō -sama. Now…"

"Oh, that's right. Lieutenant, I'm  sorry, but let me change the place for the time being."

"I don't mind …  what? It's a strange way of saying it."

"Yeah. In fact, there are various translations."

" …  Hey, wait. Did you prepare something for the seat with the lieutenant general?"

"Yeah. Well, not to him. It would be profitable if I could get rid of it…"

Satsuki exclaimed at Yakō , who mutters brilliantly, and then mourns. Perhaps because of his mind, he seems to be getting more and more intimate with him.

Did he change his mind, eventually?

"All right."

Satsuki said with a toothache-bearing face.

"Once you declare it, I won't bother you. I will cooperate in any form. So please, please give me an "explanation". "Commentary" is fine, or "excuse", it doesn’t matter. It is rather welcome.”

“No, what? If the other side rides the provocation, it will fight with the faction from now on. That's what I ended up with.”

"Wait. What does this mean? Is Debuchi also present at the current seat?"

"That's right."

Yakō  easily admits, with a secret tone that seems to reveal the mischief.

“It's not like Lieutenant Yano called me, but in the - first place, it wasn't exactly that "I was there" but that "I was peeping”.”

After saying that, Yakō  tilted his head toward Satsuki and smiled with a grin. Hishamaru did not overlook the passing of "joyful fighting spirit" in his eyes.

"Lieutenant General Yano was possessed by a spirit body. It's the same technique as my sister's. Lieutenant, this is my intuition. Isn’t Debuchi a much stronger opponent than you and Takamitsu-san are assuming?"

 ?

"Ke. In other words, it was spotted properly."

"It would have been nice if the lieutenant general's visit was at least half a day earlier. I was able to do something as it is."

An old but large wooden private house. Two men were lurking between the six tatami mats on the second floor.

A forty years old man with sharp eyes and a thick impression and a thirty-something years old gentleman somehow resembling a weasel. The former wore a dirty military uniform loosely, and the latter was dressed in cool clothes . He scratched the crossed legs in the middle of the tatami mat, blew a cigarette, sat on a piece or window frame, and looked at the cloudy sky at sunset.

Under the open window, there was the Sumida River flowing slowly. The thick clouds that cover the sky were dyed red inside by the sun, and looked like a burning plume. The surface of the river that received the light seemed to have blood floating on it. It was a beautiful but ominous sight. However, the man sitting on the window sill looked not at the river below, but at the townscape of Ningyocho on the other side.

"Now…"

While looking over there.

"How would you do, Lieutenant Colonel?"

" …  Tsuchimikado can't take the example of the demon."

"Yes. There is only one young companion. It's an "invitation" on top of that, so it seems like a pretty confident person."

"The young head of Sōma  must have had some trouble."

"It's awkward, but it's okay if you don't target Lieutenant Sōma , but it's a lot of trouble if you prolong it."

In response to the gentleman’s reply, the man in military uniform snorts wildly. He pressed the cigarette he was smoking against the ashtray and brutally manipulated it.

" …  Okay. Take the invitation."

"Yeah. It's a really sudden development."

"You really need to make judgments on the field. I'll go. I'll have the people below right away."

"No, it's fine"

"What?"

"I'm afraid of shooting in a city like this. Then you don't need a half-hearted person. Let me do it alone. Anyway, I can't do it from the other side."

The man said calmly, staring at the other side with a thin gaze like a needle. Then he stood up and crouched in front of a wooden box in the corner of the room.

He opened the lid. There were a number of spells inside. The same sign that those who attacked the dark temple and Tsuchimikado's mansion had. It was "The Sign of the Priest." His thin red lips made a razor-like smile on his face.

The man in military uniform snorted again, watching the situation, took out a new cigarette and lit it. He inhaled deeply and exhaled deep smoke.

"Okay. I'll leave it to you. Show me your hand, Dairenji."

Part 3

"Dairenji religion ? I don't know."

After answering, Yakō  turned his face to check with Hishamaru, but she also shook her head. It was a name she didn't know.

"Well … " Satsuki responded.

"Originally, it's an indigenous, unnamed school. As you might expect, the selling point is to summon dead spirits and interact with them. It's a field with a lot of deception and similarities, but it seems to be "genuine". In fact, it seems to be a school that has been going on for quite some time. It was developed as a new Shinto religion in the Showa era, and it began to call itself the Dairenji r eligion."

"That's Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi?

"Oh. The founder of the Dairenji religion was Dairenji Komichi. It seems that this guy had an exchange with the mountain where Debuchi trained. However, according to the investigation, it is this man's son who is under Debuchi. He had an outstanding spiritual power from his childhood and was treated as an inspiring child. It seems that there was an expectation for this son as one of the reasons why Komichi made his school into Shinto."

" …  What's his name?"

"Dairenji Kenmyou. In fact, it seems to be a considerable user. He is not well known, but he has a considerable track record behind the scenes."

"Well, if he can really manipulate souls, that's right."

One after another, Satsuki was reporting information that Sōma  had looked up to date. Yakō  listened with interest.

The sun has just set. The late summer sky was cloudy, and at sunset, the area was rapidly dimming. Instead, people turned on the streetlights and the neon lights began to light up. However, neon seems to be self-restraint these days, so it wasn’t so noticeable. By that amount, the city looked calmer than before.

Yakō  and his friends head toward Tokyo Station from Ningyocho in the twilight illuminated by street lights. That said, they were not trying to return to Kurahashi's residence. Their pace was very slow, and it seemed as if they were taking a leisurely stroll while enjoying the scenery.

"Let's take a different path this time. Certainly Nihonbashi is near here, right?"

They went all the way to the bridge. Hishamaru, of course didn’t complain,  and Satsuki as well, and followed to the top.

Nihonbashi was a bridge built in the 8th year of Keicho, and was the starting point of the Five Routes, which was the main artery of the Edo period. It was a famous place that was often depicted in world picture prints. The current stone bridge was rebuilt from the previous wooden structure in 1884.

It was a beautiful stone bridge with double arches and was about 50 meters long. The width was also close to 30 meters.

In addition, lions were displayed at both ends of the bridge, and a bronze statue of Kirin was displayed on the central decorative pillar. Standing in front of the Kirin statue, Yakō  looked up at the pillar.

"Kirin here has wings."

" …  The lion statue was like a guardian dog on the shore, but this one looks like a Western dragon."

"It's cool, isn't it? Ours doesn't have wings. When I see something like this, it's a bit unsatisfactory."

" Yakō -sama, to put it bluntly, wouldn’t you bend your navel again?"

"That is not right."

After laughing cheerfully, he noticed that Satsuki wasn't there, and asked.

"What about the lieutenant?"

"He said "Wait" and left."

When asked about Yakō 's aim, Satsuki grimaces, slaps his tongue, sighs, and finally reopens. Then he was in a hurry to report what he had learned so far.

-  If you think about it, he hasn't been swayed by Yakō -sama's "thoughts" yet.

Looking back at the direction he came from, Hishamaru saw Satsuki just crossing the bridge and approaching them. However, Hishamaru squints. He was holding a whiskey square bottle in his hand.

The seal has already been opened, and when Satsuki arrived in front of them,

"I kept you waiting."

And drank a trumpet in front of Yakō  and Hishamaru.

" …  the lieutenant is well-behaved."

"I think it's better than bad people."

" …  Did you hear Yakō -sama's explanation? Why are you drinking alcohol?"

"Because I heard the explanation. I can't do it without drinking alcohol."

Too frankly, Satsuki caped the bottle again. He had already opened his collar and took off his peak cap to expose his red hair. Because there was usually no gap, it looked like a very soft wind.

-  Bad soldier…

Unexpectedly, this may have been the nature of the man. Hishamaru was looking cold in the guise of a red stranger, but after exhaling a drunken breath, Satsuki took out the bottle towards Yakō .

Hishamaru rounded her eyes because she didn't immediately understand the meaning of this. Then Yakō  received the bottle, and was also drinked.

" Yakō -sama!?"

"Kka! It's strong."

"Ku … !? So… Sōma -dono, what are you imitating?"

"What. You can drink it too."

"I'm not asking for sake!"

"Hmm. That's right. Hishamaru should be stopped. This liquor is strong for you. The ears and tails may come out."

“ Yakō -sama, what I’m saying is that's not the case!"

Yakō 's strange floating is because he's looking forward to the future. It's the Lord's usual bad habit. On the other hand, Satsuki seems to have already settled down. He took out a cigarette and lit it. He put his arms on the railing of the stone bridge and let the smoke flutter while looking at the river. Yakō  also put his shoulders and elbows on the parapet while holding the bottle. He narrows his eyes pleasantly to the wind running on the surface of the river. The wind was also shaking the red hair next door, but this one remained in a moody look.

As the Lords stopped, Hishamaru exhaled a lot and then had no choice but to watch the area. However, her consciousness inevitably goes toward the two.

While Satsuki was looking into the distance he said.

" …  as I said earlier."

The story was cut.

"Isn't Lieutenant General Yano being manipulated by Debuchi?"

"It didn't look like that. It's just out of the cylinder."

" …  When did it start, the lieutenant general’s possession."

"I don't know that much. Well, the spiritual effects haven't come out very much. I don’t think it’s been months."

" …  But it isn’t recent…"

Satsuki laughed lightly as he smoked.

However, when Hishamaru looked sideways was surprised that it wasn’t the cold smile that he had. It was rather the opposite.

Yakō  shook his shoulders with a small, nasty look on his face.

"By the way, not only I but also Hishamaru have spotted it in an instant. Takamitsu-san would have known immediately if he had the opportunity to meet in person."

" …  I'm sorry for the knot hole."

"Because it is not suitable, it can't be helped. It's okay, even if not good at magic."

She said lightly, but Hisamaru was about to reveal her hidden ears.

Satsuki, with a cigarette in his hand, looks like he has crushed a bitter insect.

"It's an unwilling decision. If it's part of my power, shouldn’t I have shown it at the dark temple?"

"That's exactly the basis for the decision, Lieutenant. A true magician wouldn't show his trump card that easy."

" …  Looking ahead to the negotiations later, don’t you think that I dared to show my trump cards?”

"I don't think so. That tag is meaningful enough even if it is lying down. In short, the lieutenant had no other choice but to use the Yase Doji to protect himself quickly and reliably."

When Yakō  made a guess without a lid, Satsuki spat.

"Without a doubt a real genius. I wonder how well it is known on the Debuchi side."

"I wonder. If you have four such protections, it's enough. Just call it the first, and you're not behind most spellcasters, right? Even if the person himself is a little bad, isn't there a big problem?"

"Don't say shit."

"But you're not confident, are you?"

Satsuki bits his tongue. He got up from the parapet and took back the bottle of whiskey from Yakō 's hand.

"There's a problem. I'm still a legitimate member of the magical clan. I'm the head of Sōma .”

Satsuki capped the bottle with a smoky cigarette in his hand. Yakō  didn't seem to care.

"That said, magical talent depends to a large extent on its innate qualities. It's more constructive to be diligent than to be weird, right? Besides, the qualities of a magician and the qualities of a master are different."

" …  It is the arrogance of a talented person to be so easy-going. It might be good if you have accumulated a good track record and won the trust of the clan. But, unfortunately, I'm still young. Besides, if you don't have the skills of magic, how can you put it on paper?"

After squeezing his neck and floating his story again, Satsuki leaned against the parapet again.

"By the way, I have to apologize for that, the case of Dairenji that I talked about earlier. It seems that some days ago, it was already known among the Sōma  who were looking for it. However, the report did not come up to me. Thanks to that, I ended up at the last minute like this.”

After bitterly confessing, Satsuki roughly throws the whiskey.

Yakō  received it dexterously and said, "What?"

"I thought the timing was too good for a reason. Is it sabotage?”

"I'm not going that far, but …  well, I can't deny that it's seen as sweet. The elders support me, but that doesn't mean that I personally get a lot of people. No. Unfortunately, I'm a hated person."

The tobacco smoke of the cigarette extends in the wind blowing from the river. Satsuki twisted his body and placed his elbows on the parapet, shaking his red hair, a testament to his "blood”.

"Honestly, I envy you. You and the son of Dairenji, with respected and awe-inspiring talents suitable for a successor. If there is such a thing, me too a little more…"

Satsuki looked at the river’s surface where the streetlights were reflected. The corners of the eyes were bitterly distorted. The profile must have been Satsuki's true face, neither a lieutenant in the army nor the head of Sōma .

Hishamaru, who was listening to the unexpected flow of conversation, had an uncomfortable feeling.

-  Talent…?

The previous Takamitsu line was recollected. In an organization, youth can be a factor in creating an enemy.

At that time, she thought that an organization was an "army", but the same may apply to a "clan". Satsuki's enemies weren't just outside.

That’s why Satsuki always acts alone.

In addition to caring for military superiors and colleagues, Satsuki may have had to show off his own power, even to the Sōma  clan.

It was a short thought, but before she knew it, Hishamaru was surprised to find that the Lord was silently looking at her.

Yakō  grinned and laughed.

"Don't be fooled, Hisamaru? Apparently, Lieutenant General Yano is soliciting, but he was impatient. He’s trying to entangle us with unfamiliar hands, right?”

“ … ”

She looked at Satsuki in a stunned way, the bad soldier was shaking the tip of the cigarette up and down, looking at the river with a plain face. However, the edge of the lip was raised only slightly, biting off the laughter.

Hishamaru's face immediately turned red.

“ …  Hmm. I'm not going to do things that I'm not used to.”

“I want you to stop making fun of my shikigami. Isn't there another reason for being hated? Anyway, that's it. When I was a kid, I felt like a lord.”

“I don’t dislike the fact that you have a dragon, family head. You may have a clue, but I'm not impressed with the fact that you decide things based on your own experience.”

"Then, why don't you give another reason? For example, I'm just going to use it as a bargaining material while half-teasing even serious troubles like now…  If "young people" are just imitating that kind of thing, then they will get antipathy."

"That's why you can say things like that to other people's affairs because, Tsuchikikado Yakō , you're talented and people around you have to admit you. Besides, Kurahashi-dono. You'd better bow to him a hundred times. If he hadn't put you all up in that position, the collar around you would have been much worse.”

"I'm talking about you, not me, Sōma  Satsuki. I understand that as the head of the family, I feel a close eye on my magic skills, but no one will follow me, even if I misrepresent my true intentions and position it diagonally."

"I see, the return of Abe no Seimei is different. You’re a star with a strong desire from the family. However, what kind of feelings do you have when you are aware of this and given the opportunity to revive the family you turn your back on the times and wish for a retreat?”

"Again. How many times do I have to say it? I hate the army, Lieutenant!"

"Hmm… If you talk to Kurahashi, you can tell from those passages. The revival of O nmyoudou  is Tsuchimikado's long-cherished wish. Isn't it a story? Talent is scary. Even such a head is respected."

After saying it, Satsuki suddenly spewed smoke out of the parapet.

He manipulates the cigarette and turns to Yakō  with a glimmer. It is a very bad look, but it is a look with a poison that seems to be drawn into something. In contrast, Yakō  muttered, and remained clogged with words clogged up. He looked away and grabbed the whiskey he had in his hand.

- Yakō -sama…

Hishamaru was a little surprised. Apparently Satsuki has finally struck Yakō 's "weakness".

Should she say something? But she didn't know what to say. Hishamaru truly supported her master's choice, whatever it may have been. But what she was looking like for now was not a faithful defense shikigami.

" …  What about you, Lieutenant. You're not good at magic and even hate it, but why are you working hard to develop it? That's the clan's wish, so you just obey it?"

It wasn't like Yakō , no he seemed "like", it was a childish phrase. On the contrary, Satsuki returned a grown-up smile.

"Wrong."

He casually denied.

"I'm looking for magic for all people because I feel bad. I'd like to show off the brute force and face of those who see magic as special. Magic is something you take for granted."

" … "

Yakō  didn't respond immediately. For a while, he stared at Satsuki as if he was searching, put his mouth on the bottle of whiskey, then:

" …  If you make such magic, this time it's just another party or face. The magic ruled by the military is not a bad thing."

"I think the reason why I'm so bearish is that I'm good at "magic" but not good at "politics"? Don't worry, just don't let the army follow you. I'm not Sōma , I'm not. "

" …  Is Lieutenant going to replace Lieutenant General Yano's ambitions?"

"It's true that someone has to stand in that position. I'll tell you the truth, as long as a "persuasive" magician like Dairenji has come out, you're pulling into the countryside. No matter what you do, things won't go back. Even if Debuchi fails, someone else will just come out. The military will never leave it if it turns out to be valid. You can get it with any hand. And once the system is settled, Tsuchimikado has no veto power. Whether you want it or not, you will be forced to use magic under the army. It's also a "new spell" that the army made for the army."

Satsuki then separated from the parapet, stood straight and looked at Yakō .

He said with a serious voice.

"Tsuchimikado Yakō . Why don't you confess? I know that you really want to do this job. After all, you're a child of magic. You're just afraid of the army. I'm just doing it."

" …  What's wrong with being scared. Those who are in the army are addicted to the horror of the army and do not notice it."

"That's why you are aware of the horror, you can steer yourself. You can guide the magic with your hands in the direction you want."

"I…"

" Yakō ."

Strong and quiet, Satsuki called.

It was just a voice, however, Hishamaru felt that it was a strong "spell."

And maybe Yakō  too.

Satsuki speaks. Innocently spin the curse.

"Do you love magic, unlike me? If so, protect what you love. Take action for that."

" … "

Yakō  was silently staring at Satsuki. Hishamaru kept an eye on them.

The intentions of the young heads were balanced between the two. Various thoughts and wishes fold to create a pattern.

Satsuki was the first to relax.

With a smile that the villain shows to his accomplice:

"I don't have the talent for magic anyway. It doesn't matter what your taste is about the destination of the magic and the new magic? Tell me. The magic you want."

“ … ”

Yakō  turned his face down and looked at his feet. A small whisper leaked from his mouth. "I … "

"What I want is … "

After tweeting and silence, Yakō  slowly turned around and

-  Eee?

Yakō 's line of sight was Hishamaru. Involuntarily, she was afraid. It was so sudden that she couldn't read the Lord's intentions. However, she soon realized that it was different. The Lord was not trying to tell her something. Yakō  was just looking at Hishamaru.

Yakō  at that time was strangely nostalgic. She was familiar with it.

His face as a child. His look when he was a boy. An expression with regret and a feeling that he can't give up when he can't reach the ideal he envisions. It was the face of a boy's determination to swear something to the future self.

The shikigami did not forget her duty, even though she was stared at by the Lord and was fascinated by Yakō .

-  This is …!?

Tension runs quickly throughout the body. At the same time, Yakō , who was watching Hishamaru, noticed. The spirit of the area begins to move rapidly. The magical power crawls around the bridge.

When she noticed, the traffic was cut off. There was a barrier for paying people. Hishamaru turned around as if she had been flipped, and Yakō  shook his tongue sharply. Later, Satsuki sensed the situation and suddenly pulled out his pistol from his waist. (*?)

"Enemy!?"

"Oh, they’re finally coming!"

When Yakō  yelled at Satsuki's question, eerie shadows formed on both ends of the popular disappearing stone bridge.

Four bodies on the north side of the bridge and four more on the south side. Each was a "shadow" in the shape of a person who was over two meters tall. When you look at a strange giant that collects and compresses darkness, you get the illusion that the darkness covers your field of vision. Satsuki took his eyes off the terrifying spirit.

"Is this… demons!? Are they demons?"

" …  Ku!"

Hishamaru unravels the hidden ears and tail.

As Satsuki said, the shadows that appeared were onis. In other words, there were eight demons. This was unexpected indeed. It was hard to believe.

-  Is it illusion? No, but … !?

The miasma emitted by the shadow in front of them was undeniably a demon. In addition, the surface of the body, which seems to have solidified the darkness, swayed, but there was a distorted projection on the head. Some are one, some are two or three. It was a horn. After all it is a demon. However, was it possible even for Yakō  to use eight demons at the same time?

-  I'm sorry.

Kakugyouki was absent. Even if Satsuki summoned all four Yase Doji, they’d still have to deal with the remaining four. She was ready to fight when she left Kurahashi's house, but when the enemy's strength was so high, she couldn't reach it. She was irritated and tense and didn’t have time to think about what tactics to take.

"This is interesting. No way, a summoning of demons. I see. Dairenji has certainly a great skill. And it's really …  really unique. There is still more to the world. A real army magician…"

Yakō  gave it with shining eyes and Hisamaru said " Yakō -sama". "Yeah." replied Yakō , cursing the shadow demons.

"Hishamaru. Apparently it was cleared of people, but just in case, check if there are any ordinary people around.”

"But can I afford that …!?"

"Hey, wait, Yakō . Is it a mess? Are these demons?"

"Yeah. At least they’re not real demons."

Yakō  calmly refused. However, while his voice was calm, his whole body was already full of magical power. He was ready for battle.

"Originally, a demon is something that the human soul changes and "consists of". Dairenji must have turned some summoned spiritual body into an "instant demon" with a curse. The technique is amazing, but the idea is even more amazing. And the confidence. If you fail, it's a way to bounce back on yourself. You can't do it with ordinary preparation. However, when demons with such a power are being used at the same time …  "

Yakō , who was looking at the shadow demons, turned dark for a moment.

" …  Yeah. If you're not good at it, you're using praise. There's no way to commit contraindications. It's like a crazy magician …

Yakō 's voice, which criticized the enemy, was more admiring than angry. It should be said that it was Yakō 's bad habit to praise the enemy at such a time. When it comes to magic, even ethics are transcended at times - "fair".

"Oh, that's right, Yakō -sama! There must be an enemy caster. Let's hit it directly, not the demon!"

"No. Unfortunately, this is a "released ceremony". Dairenji should be in a remote place."

"Then it's a temporary withdrawal! Pull out from one side before we’re surrounded. The expansion of the commotion is hoped for the other side, too. If we just break through, we'll be able to do it.”

"Sweet, lieutenant. The ogres are not necessarily eight. I will prepare an ambush in addition to the show."

Hearing Yakō 's expectations, Hishamaru was almost overwhelmed.

-  On top of that, more ambush?

What Yakō  was saying was only a possibility. As long as the enemy's ability was unknown, it should be taken into consideration. However, when that happens, there is no way to do it.

What will they do? Hishamaru clenched her teeth.

"So, with that in mind, let's adopt the opinions of the two. Lieutenant!"

"Wh… What?"

"The expansion of confusion isn’t desirable, right lieutenant?"

"Says a fool. If you can get through this place, it doesn't matter whether the upper management turns pale or the newspapers!

"All right. Then Lieutenant, let’s show to Lieutenant Colonel Debuchi and Dairenji Kenmyou that "persuasive power"!"

At that time. The shadow demons who were squeezing together approached all at once. The movement was decided.

It was not fast. However, the steps shook the stone bridge.

Hishamaru suddenly pulls out a talisman. Satsuki raises his arm and tries to summon Yase Doji. However, in control of it, Yakō  commanded it high.

"I command you in the name of Tsuchimikado Yakō , get out, Hokuto, come and show your power!"

A tiny sunrise blinked on the ground, and the twilight on the bridge was blown away. The shadow demons are stopped from moving as if they were blown by a gust of wind. Eye-catching. The light and the divine spirit of the light evaporate the surface layer of the body consisting of darkness in an instant.

The golden light born above Yakō  stretches flexibly and becomes a band of light. Raised up to heaven. Then, the light condensed and formed as if the darkness condensed and became a demon.

It was a dragon. A dragon with a long and tough body covered with golden scales.

"Hokuto!"

Hishamaru looked up at the sky and cheered. By the way, I was completely forgotten. Hokuto, the guardian beast of Tsuchimikado, was taken over by Yakō , who became the head of the family. It was one of the few real dragons at the time.

Perhaps pleased with the summoning after a long time, Hokuto swam in the night sky and shook its body. Then, it noticed that the cityscape under its eyes was unfamiliar and bowed down to look into the ground as if to say what was this.

Yakō  looked up at the dragon and smiled. Next to that, Satsuki also looked up overhead and opened his mouth.

" …  What …  this is … "

"Yeah? Doesn't the head of Sōma  know the dragon?"

" …  No. Of course …  I know … "

This is exactly what it means to have no words. Satsuki temporarily forgot everything that happened that day and was just purely looking at the dragon.

" Yakō -sama!"

"Oh, I'm still using praise. Even if it hits Hokuto, it hardly collapses. It has a strong spirit body."

The shadow demons, who had been temporarily stranded, were approaching again. Hokuto noticed the shadow demons and moved its nose unpleasantly. It seems that it didn't like the devil.

The dragon challenged to attack immediately, but

"Wait, Hokuto! They are good. Hishamaru, let's go!

"Yes!"

"Hh, hey? Where are you going?"

"Lieutenant too, don't resist. It's dangerous."

"What is!?"

Without answering, Yakō  shook his arm.

At the command of the Lord, Hokuto turned around in the air, then it drew a circle all around and came down to the ground at once. Satsuki didn't scream, probably because he looked up. The dragon stretched out its two front legs and dexterously scooped up Yakō  and Satsuki. Hishamaru also ran without a break. She flipped the fox's tail, jumped up, kicked the railing of the bridge, and jumped on the back of the dragon. As it was, Hokuto soared high in the sky, leaving the shadow demons on the bridge.

"That!"

Satsuki was staring at her eyes, clenching his teeth.

When Yakō  put his foot on the dragon's claws, he stood up clinging to its arm and looked forward, despite the wind blowing.

"Cross the river to the northeast as it is!"

"Is there the enemy spellcaster?"

"That's right, I've traced the magical power. It's probably the hideout over there. I'm gonna hit him."

A golden dragon flies in the sky of the imperial capital.

Hishamaru looked around, with her hair and tail fluttering in the wind. Wide field of view. She could see the cityscape of the expanding Imperial City, lit by artificial lights. It was a vast world completely different from the village of Tsuchimikado. It seemed that the reason why Takamitsu continued to preach Yakō  to appear in Tokyo could be understood by looking at this scenery.

Yakō  was too big to fit in a village. Certainly, this place may be the right place to put his talent.

Hokuto swimmed in the night sky. The wind swirled and hit the ears.

Then, "voices" of people, under its eyes. The people of the Imperial City who noticed the dragon were yelling and pointing at the sky.

It was a different war pocket than what she felt when she was prepared to die when facing a strong enemy and was driven to a corner. A kind of tremor that Hishamaru has never experienced before. No matter how strong your heart may be, you can't do anything about it.

For example, it is a sign of a huge change.

Or it might have been the touch of an inevitable fate.

People are looking up at the sky and making noise. This turmoil-heat-will eventually propagate wide, deep, big and strong. And that wave brings irreversible "something" to the world where Hishamaru and her friends have lived.

Waves created by her beloved master, Tsuchimikado Yakō .

And …  probably the waves from Sōma  Satsuki that guide him.

-  I…

I must be at the mercy of the waves. Just like the people of the world. It was her desire. If she could ride the waves of Yakō , she’ll just innocently swim in the waves.

However….

It was chilling. The battle mark was not drawn. Hishamaru was confused by her tremors and just stood up in the fear of springing up.

"I saw it. That's it. An old wooden two-story house. Can you see it?"

"Ye, Yes!"

"OK, let's go!"

Yakō  shouts. The voice echoes happily no matter how much he denies.

And if Yakō  shouted, she would respond to it, in a loud void, no matter what it meant.

“Yes! Yakō -sama!"

Riding a golden dragon, a young onmyoji boarded an enemy land. The spellcasters who met did not go down easy, however, the battle took less than half an hour, and it ended with the victory of Yakō  and others.

However, that did not end the series of incidents. Lieutenant Colonel Yutaka Debuchi and Dairenji Kenmyou were not seen in the old private house that became the battlefield. By the time Yakō  and his colleagues boarded, the two masterminds had already disappeared.

All that was left was a single note. It was one of the paired spells that connected to the spiritual body that was possessing Kokage.

" …  Ah, ah. I want to do it.

An antique-like motor was making a hard-of-hearing noise. The boat with the two men was going down Arakawa, ups and downs in small increments.

As he sat at the bottom of the ship, he looked back at where the trail stretched. He had a wry smile on his mouth as if a beast had stripped its fangs.

Beyond Debuchi's line of sight, the creature of fairy tales was destroying his base, which had been lurking up to Satsuki. It was a scene where he had no choice but to laugh.

"When I poked the ogre, a big snake came flying. No, I was afraid. Even if it is rotten, it is the head family of O nmyoudou . Abe no Seimei's return was not exaggerated."

Routed general. It was an attitude that he couldn't think of as a commander on the run, abandoning his subordinates before the fight. However, if Debuchi's face had no regrets or apologies, there was almost no anger.

"Ke. Young Sōma  pulled out a big portable shrine. This guy's going to be re-working on it."

While whispering, he left his back on the boat, took out the sound, and played a match in a strong wind.

However, it didn't catch fire, and he called out to "Hey, Dairenji!" and his "portable shrine" on board.

Dairenji was fragile, with both hands stuck, and was looking into the battlefield behind him.

Tears are flowing from both eyes wide open as a side effect. Still, without blinking, he was squinting at the golden dragon and the onmyouji who used it. The  sight was almost invisible.

"Dairenji, can you light the fire with a sign?"

" … "

"Hey, are you listening?"

"…Great."

Dairenji continues to shed tears, as if he didn't react to his partner's words. On his fair-skinned face, there was an expression of joy.

"All the rumors were true …  No, none of them were true … . That was Tsuchimikado Yakō . The young head of the Onmyoudou sect, Tsuchimikado. Beautiful. Brilliant. What a precious, dazzling technique. It's a curse of the gods …  "

It seems that his heart was not there. Debuchi bits his tongue and has no choice but to reach for the matchbox again.

With such a partner's attitude, Dairenji lifted his hand that was poking at the bottom of the ship and spread his arms wide.

"How stupid and shallow I was to send a deceptive demon… For those who celebrate the curse of the gods, there is no better way than to reward them with the skills of the gods. Lieutenant Colonel, I am determined. I’ll do it, I’ll dedicate myself to God …  "

Dairenji screamed with an emotional gesture. Debuchi lifted one eyebrow and just said, "Yes." Finally, he succeeded in igniting the cigarette and took a rest with satisfaction.

"Well, I have to go underground for a while. Let's go leisurely."

A boat with two people goes down the river, making noise.

It was two years later that Debuchi and Dairenji returned to Tokyo.
