Chapter 54.2

The following day, they had a flight at noon. Ji Bai’s parents both came to send them off. His mother still had a dark expression, but she did not say anything.

As the plane was cruising through the clouds, the cabin was quiet, lights were dimmed, and many people were sleeping. Xu Xu gazed out of the window for a while, then turned around to look at Ji Bai.

His head leaned against the back of the seat, yellowish light hit his face, and he looked handsome and peaceful. Thinking of his words yesterday, Xu Xu felt a tender emotion.

According to him, in the future, she would not need to deal with the “mother-in-law relationship” as it would no longer exist – because all would be transformed to a “mother-child relationship.” After he said this, she felt more at ease.

If every man dealt with the difficult relationship between a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law like him, China’s familial relations would be a lot more harmonious.

Although there were some regrets, with these kind of affairs, it’s impossible to live up to everyone’s expectations. It was all…thanks to his efforts.

Xu Xu closed her eyes and gently leaned on his shoulder.

After a while, the flight attendants started serving meals. Xu Xu had no appetite, she ate a few mouthfuls and then put the chopsticks aside. Ji Bai patted her head, smiled and said: “Don’t eat if you don’t feel like it. In the evening, I’ll take you to a place where we can have some good food.”

——

They arrived at Lin City in the afternoon. When they reached home, the first task was to clean up the house a little. Looking at the bright, clean and tidy home, their hearts were warmed .

One’s own home was the most comfortable – this was really an eternal truth.

After they finished cleaning, Xu Xu took a shower. She kept the door half opened for Ji Bai. Once she had finished her shower, she went straight to bed.

In Beijing, for the sake of Xu Xu’s reputation, they had no choice but to sleep in separate bedrooms. Since vacations were rare, but he could not get close to Xu Xu – Ji Bai was very depressed. He kissed and fondled her a little more forcefully than usual. As he watched the fair, frail body getting quickly covered with love bites, the fire in his heart burned more intensely and his actions were slightly more rough and wild. He had a calm smile on his face as he kissed and bit Xu Xu’s hands and feet from time to time. Xu Xu found this both unbearable and funny, and her face flushed with embarrassment. The curtains were pulled tightly, the whole room was immersed in silence, only the two people in the room were aware of the sweetness, the excitement and the lingering tenderness.

But Xu Xu found that sex was indeed a good thing. After the release, the gloominess she was feeling after the trip to Beijing disappeared completely. Her mood lightened, the dark clouds in her mind vanished, allowing the bright moon to appear.

Ji Bai had already done it twice. Even though he wished to continue, normally, by this time, Xu Xu would twist around complaining repeatedly that she was tired. After all, he cherished her body, so he turned away from her body when she reached out and pulled his arm: “Do you want to continue? One more time? It’s fine.” Ji Bai’s dark eyes sparkled as he looked at her, his forehead beaded with sweat. He smiled. This was the most beautiful invitation he had ever received. He bent down and kissed her warmly: “Ok. How can I not?”

Finally, it was already evening. Xu Xu sluggishly dragged her weary body to take a shower. Ji Bai was smiling as he saw her enter the bathroom. He looked at the clock on the wall, then said: “Da Hu is looking for me in regards to some matters. I’ll go and see him, and then I’ll go to the restaurant directly and wait for you there.”

“Oh.” Xu Xu did not care either way.

——

Twilight enveloped the beautiful and clean city as the car breezed through the cool night. Ji Bai gripped the steering wheel with one hand and pulled out the ring box from his breast pocket with the other hand. In his eyes there was a shallow/slight smile.

He had selected a very quiet and beautiful restaurant in the suburbs. He made no arrangements of cheesy violin serenades or red roses, nor of reserving the entire restaurant with great fanfare. But there were emerald green velvet sofas, white wool carpets, and the table was set in the open air, right next to lush green mountains. The water from the springs streamed down from the transparent roof, and the whole room was sparkling. The winding streams visible from the window would reflect the moonlight and starlight

Kid, will you agree?

He was thinking about this when the phone rang. It was Da Hu.

“Boss, are you back in Lin City?”

“Yes, I’ve come back.” Ji Bai remembered that tonight there was a ball game. Da Hu was probably looking for him to watch it together. He smiled and said, “Tonight I have no time, I need to be with Xu Xu.”

Da Hu paused for a moment, then replied: “Boss, we found a corpse in the mountain.” He paused, “A very strange corpse. You and Xu Xu need to come over quickly.”

Ji Bai hung up the phone, and stared at the ring in his hands and put it back in his breast pocket. He called Xu Xu: “We can eat out another time, there is a new case, I’ll come and pick you up.”

——

The incident had occurred in a remote mountainous forest area very far away from the urban area. Although there were national and mountain roads through the forest, the area was part of the ethnic minority autonomous county. It was sparsely populated and there were no inhabitants in several areas near the mountains. If the farmers had not climbed up the mountains to look for herbs, the body would never have been discovered.

Ji Bai and the others drove to the foot of the mountain and then took the path to climb up the mountain. A little later, there were no more paths and everyone had to thread through the thorny bushes carefully. The terrain was dangerous, Ji Bai had Xu Xu closely following behind him. When they encountered a particularly difficult stretch, he carried her on his back. Lying on his warm and generous back, Xu Xu looked at his quiet silhouette in the night. Because of the case, her heart was anxious, but her mind was calm.

By the time the other criminal police officers arrived near the corpse, the sky had brightened .

At this hillside, a low-lying grassy area had been cordoned off. Behind this area was a towering cliff, surrounded by a few scattered trees.

A strange feeling arose in Xu Xu’s heart when she first saw the body – this body seemed to transmit emotions that were too intense.

It was of a woman in her twenties, wearing a thin, yellow sweater and a pair of slim black trousers. She was curled up sideways on the sunny grass. Black hair was softly spread over her shoulders. Her oval shaped face looked slender and had a beautiful silhouette.

Her skin was very fair. Dew had settled on her cheeks, hands, ankles … … every inch of the exposed skin was glittering like crystal jade. Under the dark green leaves, her body made a sharp visual impact. Her cheeks had a hint of blush. Her lips, tinted with pink honey lipstick, still seemed to have a trace of a gentle smile.

It looked like she was asleep.

A fresh and beautiful woman, quiet and well-behaved, was asleep in front of them.

For the below note: Lao/Old Mo = Ding Mo. She’s referring to herself in Third Person

Author’s Note: Lao Mo wrote about this mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship, not to increase the twists and turns in the story or to increase the conflict between the two. These last two chapters show all of you a brief scene of the relationship. If you think about Ji Bai’s identity and status, there should certainly be some issues and if this wasn’t written, it felt incomplete. Furthermore, our small snail (Xu Xu) is not experienced in this area and needs to mature and grow.

(Sigh~), but Lao Mo really cannot write about mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships. It’s tricky, all of you can see this, and if it isn’t written well, please be understanding. We’ll go on with the case and romance ah….On a separate note, there was a reader yesterday that pointed out that this was the first time Old Mo’s written about a mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationship. After that, I suddenly discovered a horrific fact. All the male leads in my previous criminal, wuxia (martial arts), and science fiction novels had mothers that unexpectedly died young (passed away when the male leads were younger)…..orz…of course, Lao Mo did that to focus writing on the plot of the story and to save writing too much about the protagonist’s relationships.
