Short Story 1

Milaine

Mylene Rapha Holfort

It has been more than ten years since she, from the United Kingdom of Repard, had married into the royal family of the Kingdom of Holfort.

Silky platinum blonde hair, beautiful and melancholic eyes.

Although she was well past thirty, her beauty has dazzled younger men.

The first of them was Leon, who has made his mark in a very exceptional way.

From being the third son of a rural baron, who had no hope of inheriting, to a Marquis.

He played an active role in the battle against the Principality of Fanoss, and the following year, he enraged the Republic of Alzer, while studying as a foreign exchange student.

He is called “The Fiendish Knight” in the kingdom, and abroad he was feared as " The Ultimate Weapon of Holfort".

Many people took pity on the Republic of Alzer, which accepted him as a foreign exchange student.

Leon, who is unruly and difficult to deal with, shows no respect to the king.

However, he treated Mylene as if he were a true gentleman, and among the people, many rumors were shared regarding him as " The Queen’s Toy Boy".

She is treated like a queen who fascinated even that Fiendish Knight.

Mylene sighed at the pile of documents placed on the office desk.

“Why am I doing this?”

Even the documents that would normally be handled by her husband, Roland, had been sent to Mylene.

Mylene herself gave in and accepted them, but sometimes she became irritated.

As she was going through the documents and signing them, one of the maids informed her that she had a visitor.

This visitor was her son, Julius.

When she gave her permission for him to enter, her son, strangely bright, greeted her with a refreshing smile.

“Mother, you look well. I would like to make a request of you.”

Mylene was disappointed from the bottom of her heart by her son who greeted her and asked for a favor.

The unnecessarily long greeting was also a problem, but she also thought that, as a prince, he should observe a little more manner in the royal castle.

If this was back when Julius was still Crown Prince, Mylene would have then corrected him harshly.

However, Julius is now just an unmoored prince.

Originally, he was deprived of his status as Crown Prince, and was in a potentially desperate position.

If such a son had a good time every day, Mylene would respond as a mother thinking, "Are you all, right?"

“Julius, you’re looking great every day.”

“Yes! I'm having wonderful days.”

His eyes sparkled and he looked like he was really having a great time.

“So, what's your request?”

She wanted to say something sarcastic, but as his mother, she was happy to see her son looking so elated.

However, after hearing Julius’ request, she stopped signing her documents.

“Actually, I'm thinking of opening a store.”

“... A store?”

“Yes. If I want to be a cook, I'd like to practice somewhere. However, I don't think any store would accept me because of my position. That's why I thought of improving my skills by setting up my own shop!”

Julius was speaking passionately to Mylene with a serious expression, clearly seeing nothing wrong with his request.

Mylene was saddened by such enthusiasm that he didn’t show when he was Crown Prince.

“I can't believe the prince wants to be a cook.”

At what point did Julius go off course?

She wasn't sure, but it seemed to be when he entered the academy.

He ended up being seduced by that girl, Marie.

Mylene knew that a lot of men failed in their relationships with women, but when it came to her son, she wanted him to be a good boy.

“Be patient before you open a restaurant. If you really want to be a cook, try to get guidance from the head chef at the royal palace.”

“Huh? No, what I want is to make skewers, doesn’t our chef have a different specialty?”

“S-Skewers?!?”

“Yes. I want to make skewer dishes. It's going to be a first-class skewer outlet!”

She wished he was joking, but Julius' expression was serious.

Mylene felt like crying.

Mylene put her hand to her forehead as she felt her head hurt, and decided to check with her husband, even though she thought he could not be trusted.

“I will consult with His Majesty.”

Then, for some reason, Julius took those words favorably, and told Mylene where Roland was.

“If so, let's look for my father at once. He should be in the lands nearby the castle right now, and if it’s possible, I would like you to hurry. I'll help you find him, too.”

“... Please wait. I have a lot to say, but really, don't move. Why isn't His Majesty at the castle?

I thought he had plans for today.”

“Didn't you know? He's on his schedule to fool around, and he's using the excuse of learning about the lives of the people in the lands nearby to pick up women.”

At Julius' words, Mylene clenched her papers.

“That bastard! You put me to work and he's playing around all day?”

“Hiiiiiiii!”

Julius recoiled and broke out in a cold sweat at the sight of Mylene's furious figure.

Mylene rang the doorbell, called the maid who was waiting outside, and ordered in a cold voice, "Please bring in His Majesty."

The issue of Julius wanting to open a restaurant was left unresolved.

It was evening.

Sitting on a bench near the fountain in the courtyard, Mylene was watching the sunset.

“My husband is a bastard, and my son wants to give up his position as Crown Prince and become a chef who prepares skewers. ...Where did I go wrong?”

Keeping the guards and maids away, Mylene looked a little tired.

Just then, a maid arrived with a package.

“My queen, I have a letter and a package for you from Marquis Bartfort.”

“From Leon? Is it something urgent?”

Mylene almost cried when she received the letter and package, and checked their contents.

The letter from Leon began with the words "Dear Queen" written on it.

It was not an urgent matter, but a summary of his most recent situation.

And there were also many words giving his concern for Mylene's health.

When she opened the package, she found a memento inside.

The letter read, "I found a perfect souvenir for you during my trip, so I'm giving it to you."

“For heaven's sake, this guy is really…”

Mylene’s face lit up.

The gentlemen and maidservants guarding her whispered and talked.

“I'm sure it's a love letter. Is the Fiendish Knight so bold?”

“The Queen is pleased.”

“It's not easy being queen.”

Mylene was glad to see the memento, but she could not hear the voices of the people watching her.
