“The Evil King isn’t there, pon.”
“Uh-huh.”
“The Evil King isn’t there, pon.”
The girl tilted her head at a forty-degree angle, eyeing Fal. It was almost impossible to divine Fal’s thoughts using only body language. But still, you could get a clue as to what was going on in its mind based on the tone of voice and repetition of the question.
I suppose considering what’s going on right now, I don’t even really have to guess, the girl thought, returning her head to its original position. Her joints made a loud cracking noise. “You’re wrong that the Evil King isn’t there.” On top of the swivel chair, the girl pulled her knees in and touched the soles of her feet together. “I don’t remember ever making them play a game with no Evil King. It’d be physically impossible for the win condition to be the Evil King’s defeat if the final boss didn’t exist.”
“There was no one on the throne, pon.”
“Who says the Evil King has to be on the throne? The name ‘Evil King’s castle’ is just a name. Nobody ever said the Evil King would be there—not me, and not you.” The girl touched her finger to the desk and flicked it. The swivel chair spun around. “If they can’t find their enemy, then it’s their fault for failing the task. There’s nooo reason to be whining to the master about it. I wouldn’t tell them to figure it out right then and there, but the game is made so that they can figure it out after they reach the fake throne. I gave them hints, too. I’m fair. I don’t lie or trick people. Unlike her.”
Gradually, the chair’s spinning sped up. Even when it was whirling around so fast that the girl was too blurry to see, her voice remained clear. The junk piled on top of the desk did not get sucked into a vortex, and the chair didn’t break, either. It just made odd noises as it twirled along.
“By the way, hasn’t Snow White come back?”
Fal was silent and gave no reply to the girl’s casual question.
