278. Baby Spider Evolution
The baby spiders were restless, crawling back and forth, and sometimes bumping into each other.
One spider swayed as it crawled near me.
Partner lowered her head and the spider crawled on top of her.
So, it didn’t go to me, but to Partner huh.
Well, Partner was the one who picked them up and she was the first image they saw after they hatched, so they imprinted more on her than me.
The spider who crawled on Partner’s head was wobbling though.
【“What’s wrong with these guyz?”】
Partner looks at me concerned.
Don’t worry, they’re just evolving.
And, at this timing too.
Partner tilts her head in confusion and looks at the baby spiders.
…… Can she not see their status?
Maybe I can teach her…… no, it’s probably the same concept as the Twin Head I fought before.
Like how I can’t use〖Fake Life〗or〖Death〗.
While watching over the baby spiders closely, they suddenly stopped crawling around.
With their body shaking, they raise their head and torso up.
“Gra~a……”
Partner makes a worried growl.
She uses〖High Rest〗on a nearby spider.
…… No Partner don’t, they’re not injured or anything.
Still, even I’m not sure what’s happening.
I keep watching them in anxiousness, until one of the spiders in the center stopped shaking.
The others diverted all their attention at the center spider.
The center spider begins to grow larger.
The once tiny small spider is now growing into a medium-sized dog.
A part of its body couldn’t withstand the strain of the swelling and a crack formed around its neck area.
The skin covering the head of the spider is peeled off and its contents are exposed.
The exposed skin on its head looks soft like human baby skin.
Breathing air, it expands and contracts repeatedly.
Looking closer, there’s bits of fuzz around it.
Is this what they call “molting”?
I thought an evolution would look more game-like.
It stretched its upper body forward, shaking off the skin below its abdomen, like trying to take off a costume.
And then, it kicked off the shed skin, with the full body looking all soft and smooth.
The spider wobbly stands up with its soft-looking legs.
The exposed skin slowly hardens upon contact with air.
Following the first one, the rest of the spiders shortly shed their skins as well.
One after another, they throw the shed skin to the sides.
After they’ve all molted, they adjusted to their grown body size and started eating their old skin.
…… I feel like I just witnessed a rare event.
Being able to see that just once in my life is enough for me.
Regardless, haven’t these kids eaten enough yet?
Come to think of it, Ball Rabbit and Partner are gluttons too.
I remember those times when the shoujo (monkeys) kept stealing my dried meat back in the days, and there was that one time when Black Lizard got her head stuck in a jar that was filled with poison and she was running around the whole cave trying to get her head out.
Since I’m actually human, my thoughts are only about processed food, so maybe my perspective on that stuff is shallow.
I mean, I’m a monster who says thanks before a meal.
Each of them has different designs now and the pattern on their backs are a light green.
So, these are the evolution lines of an Arachne then.
Now that they’ve evolved, they should calm down now……
The mother Arachne was larger than a human.
But, these guys are only the size of an average domestic dog.
Maybe one more evolution is needed for them to be like their mom.
Once they evolve into that, I should expect more sophisticated behavior from you all.
Looking at one of them, I check its status.

Umu umu, a Kid Arachne, I see.
I was also a “kid” dragon not too long ago as well.
That sure brings back memories.
I wonder if I’d still evolve into a Plague Dragon if I had chosen the kid line directly and not the baby one.
Their evolution line will most likely be〖Baby Arachne〗→〖Kid Arachne〗→〖Arachne〗.
For now, let’s heal them up, Partner…… Partner?
Looking at Partner, there was a black figure stuck under her chin.
It climbs up to Partner’s face.
Partner nudges her head up in surprise, but there was a black web stuck on Partner’s scales and it didn’t fall off.
“Gra~a! Gra~a!”
Partner freaks out and shakes her head.
W-What is that thing…… a spider?
Counting all the Kid Arachne, there were only seven of them. They’re missing one.
So, one of them evolved into that black thing.
It’s probably the spider who stuck close to Partner before evolution.
Did that one pick a different evolution……?
When it looked at me, I saw its white humanoid face.
“Gru~o?!”
I got so surprised, I let out a growl.
N-Now that I’ve gotten a closer look, it’s just a white mask attached on its head.
Its real mouth is below the mask and I’ve just now noticed its eight crimson eyes.
Wait, it’s not a mask, but…… a shell?
There’s like three crescent moon painted on it that forms an eerie smile.
W-What is this spider……
