ShangriLa Frontier Chapter 305: Little Girl’s Secret Nighttime Classroom Part 1
「Choosing between a human being and a monster…… The art of choosing is also something an Avenger must be adept at. And what better way to judge someone’s ability to do that than make them choose on the spot?」
Who do you wish to save: a child being attacked by a monster? Or maybe a woman who is about get raped and killed in a dark alleyway?
I think that most people would choose the child in this particular situation, but one glance at the eyes of the Sensei here tells me that this would be a wrong choice.
「It’s only a matter of cognition, what matters is the side at which your consciousness is leaning towards…… Actions and consequences are mere by products, something that is of no consequence in here.」
Are you able to forget about the little girl’s plea for help while saving the assaulted woman? Or can you lock it away from your consciousness that while you are facing the monster and saving a child, because of that an innocent woman is going to meet a rather grizzly end? And how can you know that said monster is there in the first place? How can you know that it’s not a trap?
Sensei has showed me here that the essence of being an Avenger is all about being able to make the right call when the situation requires it of you.
「What you have showed me here is indeed a rare result…… You choose one of the options, but you do not avert your gaze from the other problem at hand. You must always maintain a wide field of view when it comes to your mind, right?」
I don’t think that I understand that all too well, but basically what she meant by that is that you weight your options and carefully decide which ones are worth prioritizing, right? Trying to show off here with your advanced algorithms, huh, game?
「I mean, but even without that, those two……」
「Ahh, yes. That’s right. Those two? Paid actors, nothing more and nothing less. And I must say that they performed their respective roles rather nicely, if I do say so myself.」
In other words, I was played here like a god damned fiddle. Or that my heart just suffered a critical hit with that performance just now. How can I bring myself to trust what I see after this……? But no, I get it, I really do. Thanks to that the whole scene was much more realistic.
「I get it that they are a talented actors, but don’t you worry about their safety sometimes……?」
「No need to worry about small things like that. Those guys are professionals. If need be, thy can even pretend to be dead and they can do it so good that even a professional assassin would fall for it.」
No, that’s not really what I meant here…… No, wait a moment. They can even play dead so well that a professional assassin would be fooled? That’s actually super amazing! My interest is picked! Is there some sort of a special job that can grant you acting skills such as those?
「Alright, nevermind that for now. Back to the topic at hand. What is the score of my aptitude test? Did I manage to pass?」
「Hmm, let’s see here…… When it comes to Avengers, they are generally divided into “Anit-Human” and “Anti-Monster” types. However, you seem like the type who can handle both of those types if need be, so I shall leave the choice to you.」
「Then make me an “Anti-Monster” type.」
Normally I would not mind to fight against human opponents, but after my experience both in the Bakumatsu and Round Table, I get a feeling that some sort of refreshment would be a good idea here. Besides, I’m not playing ShanFro because of the need to go PVP, so that’s that.
「…… Right. Follow me, then.」
「Eh? Ah, oh, yeah, right! Right after you, Sensei!」
Eh? What is this, what’s this all about? Ah, please don’t do this to me, Tias-sensei! I’m already half-naked, so please don’t add to my anxieties here! My pure maidenly heart will not be able to stand it!
「Now, onto the practical test…… You will have to beat down a certain someone.」
「By beat down, you mean……」
The practical test. This is the reason why we are moving further and further away from the Ancient Ruins right now.
It seems that the quest was still going on, and that it was all a part of it…… I wonder what I will have to do now?
Earlier I was forced to participate in a rather shameful display when I, the half-naked female avatar, was dragged around the town by a little girl wearing nothing more but a bikini armor. And now we have arrived at some place and Tias-sensei points her finger somewhere…… What is this? A cherry tree that looks like an oversized golem? Ah, no, that’s not it? You mean that other thing? That something over there?
「Over there?」
Oho, what’s this? Something is running towards us at speed that can only be described as furious. Ah, now it’s running towards that golem-y thing and…… and it pushes it aside like an American football player the member of the opposite team…… What the hell is this, this thing? It looks kind of like a sea anemone, but with legs……?
「…… That thing. Beat the living crap out of it. The faster you do it, the better.」
「A little bit more of an explanation would be much appreciated here!?」
Tias—sensei lets out a deep sigh…… It was very similar to a reaction on a cutscene that you could not skip, even though you have seen it a bunch of times already.
「This thing is called a “Maneater”. As the name might suggests, it devours people for nutrients. But only their arms, to be more exact.」
「So this thing is made entirely out of human arms!? That’s gross.」
I see…… That explains a lot. And why do I get a feeling that this thing would be a perfect fit in Lulilas? Yeah, it would fit like a glove there…… But wait, weren’t sea anemones attached to some of the fish people and other monsters there? I think they did.
「The name that was given to that creature is “Aigaio”…… It grew too insolent and it hunts for people closer to human settlements, therefore we received a request to dispose of it.」
「And are there any prospects of you lending me a hand here, Sensei……」
「…… I am very sleepy right about now, so while you’re at it, I’ll be taking a nap. For about five minutes or longer.」
「Time Attack time!」
You don’t mind, do you? Come on, sea anemone! I’m going to make a seafood out of you!

Seriously though, you thought I am a fool or what? Even though this thing might have had a hundred arms, it would have to grab me with at least one of them. And in order to grab me, it would have to get closer to me.
That being said, this monster was no match for my “Operation: Can’t Reach a Place Where It Itches”. I was really fortunate here that my body became smaller do to the gender change, so I used that advantage to just run around the monster’s legs and sting its ankles into oblivion.
「W-What’s my time, Sensei……?」
「Five minutes and eighteen seconds. Oh well, I would say that’s a rather good clear time.」
