Chapter 3: High Tower

The setting changed again.

This is the destination that Ferris, Kiefer, Pia and Zola are heading to.

In the basements of the Church in the capital Aitanra of the Remrus Empire.

Here,

“…….”

Luke Stokkart was investigating the area.

The design of the church is very complicated. In fact, it is abnormally big.

Although the tower above ground was nothing but tall, the underground section was huge, and it was also filled with people offering lives as sacrifices to god.

The empty shells of humans who had been toyed with by the gods, were heaped here.

In this underground facility, there were already many floors on which there were these humans who crawled on the ground and had arms growing out their backs. (Note: creepy much?)

Whenever Luke tried to pass by them, the arms would attack him as though trying to turn Luke into one of them.

Hence,

“……”

Luke waved a hand. Then he waved the thin string wound around his finger through the air. The line sliced through the purple arms.

Arms flew.

Watching these arms spin through the air,

“Where, is God?”

Luke muttered.

Then he remembered Riura’s words.

Those were words regarding the monsters that existed in this world.

Words regarding those named the <Priest>, the <Hero> and the <Goddesses> who had created humans’ monsters.

These monsters in the Remrus Empire were probably part of those monsters too.

Ever since earlier, a voice had kept resounding in his head as though trying to brainwash him, yes, that voice called itself <God>.

<<I am God. The god who gives you fortune and happiness. Commit yourself to me. Lend me your body.>>

This persuading voice was heard often.

Of course, because he had dismissed the part of his mind that could hear that voice, it was no longer of concern to Luke.

“…… Well, even if it wasn’t this kind of person who calls himself a god, I wouldn’t trust him…… But everyone listened so obediently.”

He said this, and then surveyed the surrounding humans with pity.

Then,

“These…… If I kill Remrus will they recover? That would be good.”

He muttered.

The arms attacked again.

He dodged swiftly, and continued to advance. Simply by manipulating the line with his finger, he cut through all the hands that attacked from behind his back.

He moved forward, maintaining this attitude.

What he was looking for, was the stairs to the level above.

“…… That map wasn’t easy to prepare, but I didn’t even get a chance to use it.”

He had infiltrated the inner workings of the church before to conduct an investigation and had even made a map, but had left it at the inn.

Of course, he had memorized the details of the map. Because he had made it himself. Furthermore, his memory was the kind that would not easily forget something that he had seen.

That was why he had completely memorized the contents of the map, but the place he was currently in was not a location illustrated on the map.

He had not known that there would be such extensive grounds underground.

How should he put it, going by the level of magic available nowadays it should be impossible to build such a huge facility underground. That was why Luke had not found out about them.

“…… I really didn’t expect the opponent to be <God>, how negligent.”

He tried a bitter laugh.

Although no one was asking him about this, but because his ability to feel emotions had been damaged, he would often carry out this kind of exercise to express emotions.

Laughing stupidly with his eyes narrowed nearly into a line, he searched for the stairs up.

Then he ascended.

But he was still in the underground facility.

“……Hm.”

He looked around this floor.

As with before, it was filled with sacrificed humans. Their numbers were increasingly unstoppably, so many that they were nearly emerging onto the surface.

But he was no longer looking at these humans.

He only observed the configurations of the floor, ceiling and walls,

“…… I keep getting the feeling, the people who constructed this underground facility – Ah no, they might not be humans – But they really knew how to grasp what others were thinking.”

He moved on.

This time, within a few minutes, he found the stairway leading up.

With every floor that he went pup, he found the stairs quicker.

“…… Well then, I’ve reached the first floor.”

The first floor was a huge hall that seemed to be a chapel.

But it was deserted.

Luke turned around, surveying the hall. Then he looked in the direction of the door, which was open.

It was bright outside.

Because he had been underground up to now, he had no idea whether it was day or night, but going by the position of the sun,

“It’s nearly time to prepare lunch for Captain.”

He smiled.

Of course, right now, Milk and Luke were many miles apart.

“…… Captain, are you eating well?”

As he said this, he exited the chapel.

There was not a trace of a person outside the church. No, in this country, there no longer any signs of life at all.

Casting his gaze out, there were only humans prostrate on the ground, the arms sprouting out their backs tightly entangled together.

Although he did now know the meaning of this, he was sure,

“It’s something bad. Just the sight of the light makes me uncomfortable.”

He muttered.

Then he turned around to look at the top of the church that he had just left, a tall building like a tower.

“Remrus has to be somewhere in this tower…… Probably at the very top.”

After saying this, he stuck out his tongue and rolled it. As though stimulating his throat, he pressed down on the root of his tongue. Then because of the stimulation to his throat,

“Guh”

He made a small sound.

At the same sound, a coin shot out from his insides, through his throat and into his mouth. He extended his tongue again, releasing the coin into his hand.

It was a silver coin inscribed with a snake with two horns.

That was also from Riura.

Apparently it was a <Rhule Fragment>, a coin with the power to kill a god.

Luke looked at this coin,

“…… Well, if Duke Riura isn’t lying, but. No matter how you look at him, that guy looks like a fraud.”

He laughed.

Then he placed the coin in his pocket. Although he did not know if he would use it, he still had to be prepared.

Killing god – although he couldn’t just believe Riura’s words so easily, but to prepare everything that could be prepared was his policy.

To secure an escape route, he surveyed the church and walked along its perimeter. He lay lines everywhere, preparing traps, diligently making preparations.

Preparations were easy. Because there were no patrols or soldiers, in fact there was not a person a sight. But even so, he still diligently laid down his traps. As the church was too huge, it took a lot of time, but he prepared patiently.

Then once more, he returned to where he had been earlier. The main entrance to the church.

He looked at the church,

“…… Well then, should I go up from inside, or climb up on the exterior before entering, what should I do?”

The traps that he had laid outside were designed to counter any attacks regardless of which path Luke took to escape.

“Coming back isn’t a problem, but how should I get there?”

He pondered this. What if, the interior was filled with countless non-human monsters keeping guard, things like that.

“Climbing up outside is more relaxed.”

He muttered this, then began to put his thoughts in order. With regard to situations that he had never seen before, he considered many types and many situations in his mind, then decided on what plans would be best to counter these.

Of course, his opponents here were not just humans, they were citizens of the cursed city, and the monsters that possessed them, he could not think of any effective way to dispatch them.

If that was the case,

“…… Anyway, I’ll climb the exterior before going in.”

As he spoke, he closed the door to the church.

Then he gazed up at the tower that seemed to pierce the clouds, and suddenly.

He sensed something.

Even though until today, the humans in the street were all as though dead, now he was suddenly aware of a presence.

“……Hm.”

He bent down. Then he held his breath. Extinguished his presence. Allowed his gaze to move to where he had sensed the presence.

The presence came from somewhere above in the tower.

Just right at the window on the third floor.

He extended his right hand in the direction of the window to gauge the distance. The needle on the string that he threw out lodged firmly in the wall, and he used it to jump upwards.

Towards the wall of the tower.

He moved towards the side of the window. Because of his movements, there was a small sound. An extremely small, weak sound.

But if the opponent was of a certain strength, he would not run just from that small sound.

But even so, moving towards the side of the window was not without meaning.

From this position, if the window was opened, he would have a clear shot at the person inside.

Furthermore, as long as he let the opponent know that there was an ambush here, the opponent would not open the window so easily. In that case he had more time to consider what he should do next.

So Luke chose this position, and observed the opponent’s movements.

“……”

Hiding his presence, he observed the opponent’s movements.

Of course it might be the case that the opponent had also detected his presence.

Or it might be that the opponent’s level was too low to sense him, or had heard his movements by chance and escaped.

If that was the case then things were easy, but he still concentrated fiercely on sensing the opponent’s presence. Investigating the opponent’s presence.

But at this moment, the opponent’s presence was extinguished.

Evidently the opponent had also caught onto his existence.

Suddenly, the window was flung open violently.

At the same time, a fist that broke the glass came hurtling at him.

But this was also within his predictions.

Luke wrapped Razer’s String around the opponent’s first. Although he could simply cut the hand off, that would allow the opponent to escape. So he only ensnared, captured him. Then from inside the tower,

“You can take my hand, but I’ll take your life!”

A voice was heard.

And that voice, Luke somewhat recognised –

While he was mulling over this, from inside the tower,

“WHAT I SEEK IS RAINBOW>>>……”

He heard the Roland magic spell ‘Light’ being chanted.

“Ah, wait, could that be Calne?”

Luke sputtered out panickedly.

Thus from inside the tower,

“…… Eh?”

There came a rather surprised voice.

Then a young man’s face appeared in the window.

Blond hair that brushed his shoulders, and blue eyes that endeared him to most. He wore a battle uniform that only high-ranking officers in the Roland Empire were allowed to wear.

Without a doubt, that was General Calne Kaiwal.

Right now, because Calne Kaiwal had been captured by the Remrus Empire, Roland had issued orders to save him.

“…… It really is Calne.”

As Luke said this, Calne looked at him with an expression of astonishment.

“Arara, Luke-senpai, why are you here?”

“…… Ah, I just came to do a bit of an investigation on the Remrus Empire…… Ah, and to rescue you along the way.”

“Eh, along the way?”

Calne laughed and said.

Then he transferred his gaze from Luke to the scene outside, and put on a serious expression.

“……Ah, I’m only here to do a little bit of investigations on Remrus Empire….ah, and to save you along the way.”

“Eh, along the way?’

Calne smiled as he said.

Before directing his line of sight from Luke to the scenery outside, putting on a concentrated look,

“However, here, what exactly happened? Could it be that, during the time I am being imprisoned, this having-arms-growing-from-the-back thing became a new trend~ Things like this, impossible right?”

With regards to this question, Luke replied.

“That became a trend since last year.”

“Ah haha, not again not again.”

Luke smiled.

“Maa, put your jokes aside”

“That’s right Luke-senpai. This is the headquarters of the enemy. It’s not the time for jokes.”

Luke looked at the streets of the Remrus Empire. As he was now at a greater height to survey the surroundings afresh, he could now see the extent to which this empire was strange more clearly.

All the people on the streets were prostrate on the ground.

This scene was extremely weird, if normal people saw it they would definitely be so frightened that they would not be able to stand or move.

But Calne’s reaction was very calm.

Of course this man called Calne Kaiwal who had grown up training with Claugh, could not be compared to normal people, but even so his reaction when gazing upon this scene was a little too calm.

Furthermore, this was still the Remrus Empire’s territory.

All the humans had already been possessed by the voice of the monster that called itself <God>.

If so, the risk of Calne being possessed here –

“……”

Luke used his hand to grab the window Calne had opened. Bending slightly, he vaulted over the windowsill to stand beside Calne.

The interior of the tower was dark.

As if there were no sources of light.

Calne seemed like he ran here from the abysses of darkness.

From the kind of darkness a human’s eyes won’t be able to see through.

Luke squinted his long and narrow eyes before turning over.

Calne looked at his direction, sounding a little shocked,

“Do you want to go in?”

That expression of shock looked a little human.

But this is not enough to build trust.

Luke gave a slight smile.

“Eh eh. Because I’m here to investigate.”

“But here, is the main base of Remrus. Is there any problem breaking in….”

He replied. Afterwords,

“No matter what, Luke-senpai has been working solitarily since long ago.”

Calne talked about Luke’s past.

Even though the level of trust went up. But there’s still not enough for him to believe. No, no matter what Luke had never trusted anyone.

Therefore, he said.

“I am different from Claugh; I am not good at interacting.”

“Ah haha, even if you put it this way, you are on quite good terms with Claugh.”

“Does it seem this way?”

“It is~. Claugh always has an expression like this as he calls Luke a bastard~”

Calne pinched his brows as he started to imitate Claugh.

It was then Calne realised. Realised that something near his neck glinted as it reflected light.

It was a string.

Wound around Calne’s neck.

It was what Luke had been using in the altercation with Calne earlier when entering through the window.

Having realised this, Calne asked.

“This, what is it?”

“It’s string.”

“I can see that…… But could it be that this string, with one tug of it my head will fly off?”

“That’s right.”

“Uwah, that’s too much.”

“Ahaha. But I won’t do that. This is for insurance. Insurance to see if you’re real or fake.”

So Calne looked at him and said.

“But I’m real?”

“You would say that even if you were a fake.”

Calne laughed at this.

“Maa that’s true. Situations where someone seems so real, yet once you take their head off uwah~, I’ve experienced that kind of thing too many times.”

“What??”

“Ah, that’s not related to this. I kinda feel betrayed.”

Calne laughed stupidly, then made a slightly downcast expression.

Seeing this, Luke said.

“The monster that dominates this country seems to be very skilled in possessing people.”

“That seems to be the case. Everyone’s prostrate on the ground.”

Ignoring the string wound around his neck, Calne turned to look out the window.

Then,

“What’s the effective range? Only this street? Or the entirety of the Remrus Empire? What if all the humans outside the Remrus Empire also became this way….. That would be terrible……”

At this point, Calne was suddenly a little timid, but still put on a serious expression different from before,

“…… I’m worried about Esruna.”

He said softly.

This emotional divulgence was something that increased Calne’s trustworthiness. So Luke waved his finger, removing the string wound around Calne’s neck.

However, he did not simply remove it. In the instant in which Calne transferred his gaze to him, the room was filled with string.

If this person was an enemy, even if he launched an attack, this should be enough to defend.

That was why he released the threat to Calne’s neck.

Then Calne looked over at him,

“Ara, I don’t even know what made me say that?”

He asked, and Luke nodded.

“From the way you speak, I know I can trust you.”

“Eh, which part?”

“From your chest?”

“Ah~! Actually I had already been thinking about it, Luke-senpai really hates people, huh?”

“I’m often told that.”

Luke smiled. Then he lifted his foot. He made his decision to enter the depths of the tower.

At this moment Calne,

“Aah, you’re really going alone?”

Hearing this question, Luke stopped in his tracks.

“It’s easier to go alone.”

“I’ll hold you back?”

“No no, but you have someone you want to protect, right? Please go the side of the person you want to protect.”

“But, before that, there is information I have to tell Luke-senpai – Eeh that, the one who kidnapped me is……”

“A monster, right? I know. Furthermore I—”

I only believe what I see with my own two eyes – just as he was about to let this slip, he swallowed his words.

No matter what, he could not be fooled by the words of Calne who might be possessed by Remrus.

So he ignored it and prepared to advanced into the depths of the tower, but Calne continued.

“No, uh, it’s not about my kidnapper. I have to talk about the person who freed me.”

He said.

This piqued his interest, so Luke turned around.

“The person who freed you?”

“Yeah.”

“You were saved by that person, so you were able to escape?”

“That’s right.”

Calne nodded.

In other words, he had only escaped thanks to being rescued by someone. That was probably someone who had been freed from Remrus’s brainwashing, so Calne had not been brainwashed, and had made it here with his faculties intact.

To be captured by a monster that could brainwash an entire empire, then to have the good luck to be rescued by someone on whom brainwashing had had no effect, to escape and meet Luke – that was the gist of it.

“…….”

That’s too coincidental, isn’t it? Luke thought.

But it was because it was so coincidental, that it had the ring of truth to it. If everything had been done with the purpose of brainwashing Luke and feeding him false information, a more realistic lie would have been created.

Therefore, Luke stopped his footsteps, and faced Calne again.

“….Then, exactly who saved you?”

He asked.

Calne looked rather dilemmic,

“Who exactly is that person?”

“Saved by a stranger?”

Faced with this question, Calne shook his head.

“No, he can be counted as someone I know.”

“Erhur?”

“That was, that….. The person who saved me was Ryner.”

“…..Oh? Ryner….. In other words, Ryner Lute?”

“Yeah.”

“The one who escaped from Roland?”

“Yeah.”

“Ryner is here?’’

Luke asked. However, Calne still looked like he dare not believe him,

“That, is undoubtedly Ryner’s face, but the feeling it left one with is a little different.”

“Feeling?”

“Eh eh. The things he told me is very strange too…..”

“What did he say?”

Calne answered.

“Sorry, for locking you up.”

“‘Sorry for locking you up’? In other words, Ryner brought you here?”

But Calne shook his head.

“Ah no, I was captured by Remrus soldiers. Then I was placed in prison.”

“Then, Ryner came to rescue you, and apologized for locking you up?”

“Yeah.”

“Anything else?”

“He asked me to pass a message to Sion.”

“What was the message?”

“He said that he had something that he wished to convey to Sion, and told Sion to come here.”

Calne responded.

In reply to these words, Luke looked up at the ceiling as though scrutinizing the top of the tower.

Then,

“…… Here?”

He muttered.

“…… To this strange empire filled with monsters?”

He muttered in such a small voice that no one could overhear.

There should be a monster here by the name of Remrus.

Yet someone who was apparently Ryner had appeared here.

The man who had escaped Roland, and bearing the name of the Demon King, had become the king of the central continent, the People’s Republic of Sphelliyet.

Moreover, he was the son of that Riura Lute.

Riura had placed the <Demon> in Ryner’s body for the sake of allowing Ryner to live on. So it seemed that in Ryner’s body, there was something else that was not quite human.

In addition, that <Demon> and <Hero> attracted each other. Although even Riura did not seem to know when those two would merge into a single being, but if those two monsters merged, they would surely become a monster that was even harder to deal with.

In other words, one side of the equation was here, summoning the other side of the equation.

One half was summoning the other half.

But Luke could not imagine Ryner and Sion meeting here.

They should not be able to resume their relationship so easily.

The two of them were already very distant.

They had killed many.

Yet it seemed that Ryner Lute was still summoning Sion Astal.

Here.

In this strange country run by a monster by the name of Remrus Remuld Arqueld.

Furthermore,

“…… I feel that evil forces more than I can imagine are at work here.”

Luke crooned.

And looked towards Calne’s back.

Looked at the people lying prostrate on the ground.

Looked at the humans who were dedicated as offerings to the curse,

“….. in the end, what are those offerings for? No matter how I see it, I don’t think Ryner is the type of person strong-willed enough to allow those cursed ones to become offerings….”

He muttered. Ah no, could it be that Ryner Lute changed completely? Even though rumors have it that Ryner killed thousands of soldiers from the Gehlficient Empire.

However, Luke did not believe that.

At the very least, he knew that the man called Ryner Lute was a weak, innocent person.

And it was because of this, that the person who had helped Ryner escape from Roland was Luke. Because he believed that Ryner could become a construct to control Sion.

But if the rumors about the Demon King were true, then perhaps Ryner had changed, and then perhaps the possibility that Ryner had been the one who had sacrificed humans here, was not zero……

Having thought up to this point, Luke looked at Calne and said.

“Calne.”

“Hm.”

“This, what do you think of it?”

Then Calne looked back over his shoulder, out the window,

“It’s a trap to draw Sion out.”

“You think so too?”

“If that wasn’t the case, he had no reason to free me. To free a hostage on purpose, and then call Sion here, this kind – good grief, but if you consider how obvious this tactic is, maybe it isn’t a trap?”

What Calne said conferred with what Luke had just thought about. Then he looked at Luke,

“But Luke-senpai is better at seeing through this kind of thing? What does senpai think of it?”

To this question, Luke replied.

“Everything’s a trap.”

“Everything being?”

“The people lying prostrate outside. The reason for freeing you. The reason for Ryner Lute being here. I think that all this was carefully laid out.”

“But, who was that trap laid out for? Is it Sion? But under these circumstances, even I think it’s a trap? The fact that I met Ryner here, at the very least I will not immediately relay that to Sion. First I should tell Claugh-senpai, Mira-senpai……”

By then Luke had already given up on listening to Calne. Then he started thinking himself.

This was all true. Hence, the mission entrusted to Calne was probably something else. Calne isn’t the bait to hook Sion.

If so, what is the bait? He tried thinking about this, but came to no conclusion. He did not have enough information.

However,

“Calne.”

He called Calne’s name again. Then he waved his finger once more, allowing the strings laid down in the room to move.

Calne looked around him with a rather dazed expression, and asked.

“…… Seriously, when did you prepare all this?”

“When you turned around.”

“Luke-senpai really is the same as always.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. So why did you put out the strings?”

Being asked such, Luke answered.

“It looks like you’re also part of the enemy’s plan, so, I want to let you reflect.”

“Does that mean you’re going to kill me?”

He was asked this by Calne.

Luke thought that was fine too.

Perhaps to Remrus, Luke’s existence should be an unknown factor. Because Luke had received information from Riura about the <Priest>, <Goddesses> and <Hero>, and had also learnt how to undo the brainwashing.

That was why he had escaped from Remrus’s brainwashing. And he believed that Reurus had not foreseen these events.

But Calne was different.

Calne was here to be used by Remrus. If he allowed him to live, there was the risk that he might be an important pawn to Remrus. No, perhaps he was already a pawn.

But even so, it was necessary to stop Calne’s movements here.

That was why, Luke pulled on the strings. They slithered past each other as they surrounded and closed in on Calne.

Perhaps Calne would dodge.

Escape towards the back.

But that would be the end. Because behind Calne, a trap had been set near the window–

“……”

Yet Calne did not move. He did not dodge the strings, allowing them to encircle his neck just like that.

He looked in Luke’s directions.

“Looks like my survival will be a hindrance. In that case please kill me.”

Luke opened an eye a little,

“Even though it would be safer to kill you”

“I know that too, but actually there’s a girl I kinda want to see.”

“……”

“Uh how should I put it. It’s a frivolous topic, but when one is trapped and knows that he is about to die, he becomes aware of things that he must do.”

“……”

“So it it’s possible please let me live, I want to go home.”

“……”

“No?”

At this moment Luke pulled on the strings with force. Luke’s neck was tightly wrapped.

Then Calne,

“Ah, they didn’t cut through…… You didn’t kill…… Ah……. Thank you…… Very much……”

But his words stopped here, Calne had lost consciousness. His breath had been choked off. With that, he fell to the ground. Luke wrapped his strings a few more times around the fallen Calne, and tied the strings to the wall of the tower outside the window.

This way, Calne should not be able to move of his free will. Furthermore, his neck was still being choked. He would not awaken anytime soon.

He nodded, and once more prepared to set off into the tower.

But yet another problem appeared.

There was a sudden voice.

A voice in his mind.

The voice of <God> entered Luke’s mind.

Milk Callaud’s voice.

Ah no, this voice was resounding. It had been resounding ever since he had met Milk. And Luke was constantly being brainwashed by this voice.

However, that voice was louder than usual,

“Luke.”

The voice called.

“Luke. Come to me.”

It called.

Then Luke gazed in the direction that he felt the sound had come from. It was outside the tower. But he felt that it was not far off.

“…… Captain, has she come here?”

He climbed onto the windowsill. From there he cast his gaze out, scanning the streets.

There was no sight of Milk. Most likely, she had not entered his field of vision.

However,

“Luke.”

The voice resounded.

It resounded fiercely.

There was no doubt that it was near.

So he,

“Could it be, she wants me to rescue……”

He stopped in the middle of his sentence, and shook his head.

No.

That was not the reason for Milk Callaud’s arrival.

This,

“…… Is it a trap?”

Luke believed so.

Then he began to put his information in order. All the information that he had at the moment.

It seemed that in this tower, there was <Demon King/Ryner>.

And it seemed that he was summoning <Hero/Sion>.

Not only that, but <Goddesses> were also being attracted here.

He could not believe that this was all a coincidence. At the very least, in his heart, Luke could not simply file these under the overly simple heading of ‘coincidence’.

This had to be a trap.

And it was a trap that was unusual to the point of being miraculous, and that had been most carefully arranged.

“Damn.”

Luke leapt out from the window. He threw Razer’s String at the wall above, and began to use it to climb.

At the apex of the tower, Remrus was probably waiting with some trap in place.

He did not know Remrus’s purpose for doing so. Nor did he know his plans.

But, it was obvious that this was bad.

Not only that, but Milk’s voice was also getting louder and louder.

“…… Damn, damn. Could it be that I’ve become Captain’s bait? But, where? Where was the trap laid for me? Was it when I was given orders by Sion? Or did this plan begin when I met Riura Lute for the first time?”

Could it have begun even earlier?

If that was the case, perhaps victory was not certain, to the extent that Luke even wanted to cradle his head in his hands.

No matter what, he had to come up with a detailed plan to have any stab at victory. Those who are prepared can definitely emerge victorious.

This time round, the enemies seemed to have came up with a plan far deeper and longer and than that of anyone else. They set layers and layers of huge traps, it can be said to be rather scary.

Then perhaps this script can no longer be halted.

Perhaps, Ryner is indeed here.

And Sion might arrive unprepared.

The entire screenplay might progress according to how Remrus described.

However, even if this is the case,

“….. Before the squad leader arrives, I have to attack Remrus.”

He thought about the methods and strategies to achieve this.

Designing his strategies.

Gathering his thoughts.

He allowed his thoughts to flow quicker, stronger. Until he had a headache.

“…… I’ll kill you. I have to kill you. Even if it takes my life, I have to disrupt your plan.”

He said, and then desperately ascended the tower.
