THE AUTHOR, THE AFTERWORD, AND YOU!
I think that to a lot of people out there, coffee is an indispensable part of their daily work lives. I, Wagahara, am an ardent member of that group myself, and there’s always a mug at the ready at a corner of my desk as I focus on my work.
That doesn’t mean, however, that I have any deep philosophy about my coffee, any “ This way or the highway!”–type requirements. My stance is that whether it’s instant, brewed, or from a can out of the vending machine, the best coffee in the world is the one in my hand right now. Still, whenever I come across some coffee that matches my preferences perfectly…well, that’s a rush I can never get enough of.
The original inspiration for this story came from a cup of coffee exactly like that. I encountered it at a certain café I stopped by once, and it was so perfect to my palate, I almost instinctively quoted the worlds of French Revolution–era politician Charles Maurice de Talleyrand, who once described coffee as “black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, sweet as love.” A pity I couldn’t have collaborated with Talleyrand on this book, in fact. We both seem to have preoccupations with demons and caffeine.
Sadly, this café is a good two hours down the freeway by car, so most of the time, it’s good ol’ instant coffee for me. You can’t have everything in life.

Now, while I’m sure I don’t have to remind anyone who’s read this far, The Devil is a Part-Timer! , now in its second year of publication, is getting made into an anime series. I did a spit take with my coffee when my editor told me about it.
When 029 showed me the first visuals he was preparing for Volume 1 two years ago, and when both Akio Hiiragi and Kurone Mishima turned my work into two comic series a year ago, each of these talented creators used their own viewpoints to make the story even more attractive and engaging to readers. They helped me learn quite a bit about my own creation. Now, with this anime version, I’ll have a chance to survey every nook and cranny of this world once again, a chance to rediscover all the charms it holds for me. That’s something I think I can throw right back into these novels—it’s the least I can do, after all, for all the many readers who’ve supported me thus far.
This volume depicted the story of a Devil King, a Hero, and a teenage girl taking one more step forward in the lives, as much as their budgets will allow. Whether they’re in anime form or not, it’s a beautiful thing to see.
One final note: Regular human beings are incapable of wielding holy magic, no matter how long they scream their heads off at the local public bath. Please be kind to your neighbors.
And with that, I hope to see you in the next volume.
Bye for now!!
