Chapter 3

Final Challenger XIV: Alley Cats Reborn

TL note: Reference to Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

Part 1

Translation: Yamaking

Rusian: So there you have it. We’ll be counting on you.

Nekohime: Why mew?! What I should I deow?!

Rusian: We’ve leave that up to you, Nekohime-san. Anyway, please do something about it.

Nekohime: Meow’re just offloading this whole thing on to meeeeeeeeee!

Nekohime-san let out the shocked emote but I didn’t pay any attention to it.

Apricot: I, is this really fine Rusian?

Rusian: It’s fine. Ask others what you can’t do yourself! What’s impossible is just impossible so it can’t helped!

Apricot: Is that really so…?

Really. If it’s Nekohime-san, she can probably do something about this.

Today, I brought Master along with me and came to where Nekohime’s Elite Guard was located.

‘This guild’s motives for fighting are too specialized that they are not really fit as mercenaries’, is what Master seem to have concluded before. And since their interests don’t lie in matters related to money, there’s no easy way of getting to them other than outright normally talking with them.

The one in charge of their negotiations, Mr. †Cloud†, had an incomprehensible look on his face as he said,

†Cloud†: We’re fine with participating if Nekohime-san asks us to, but what benefit would doing so give us?

Rusian: Nekohime-san says she’ll be joining Nekohime’s Elite Guard if you do.

†Cloud†: Seriously?!

A heart mark appeared above Mr. †Cloud†’s head!

†Cloud†: Alright. You heard that everyone?! From this point on, Nekohime’s Elite Guard will be under the command of Alley Cats!

Nekohime: Just wait a meownite! I didn’t meowntion that! I’m not going to accept that statement of meowrs!

Nekohime: Can’t meow just imagine how painful it would be for mew if everyone else sees that Nekohime-san joins Nekohime’s Elite Guard?!

†Cloud†: Surely you jest goddess.

Nekohime: I’m not getting to meow at aaaaaaaaaall!

Rusian: Problem solved then.

Apricot: Is this really alright?

Rusian: It’s fine— Everyone’s actually just looking for an excuse to join in as well after all.

It was making everyone yell ‘Nekohime-san will join our guild if we win so let’s do our best!’ so this is fine.

You don’t need a lot of money to make people act.

This is especially true in net games.

Rusian: Let’s leave everything about the details of that deal to Nekohime-san. Well then, time for the next one.

†Black Magician†: An alliance, you say?

Apricot: Indeed.

Rusian: That’s right. We just have to win the upcoming Castle Siege this week no matter what.

†Black Magician†: I see…

The next place we went to was the very dependable †Black Magician†-san.

I want negotiations with them to succeed no matter what.

While it’s true that Nekohime’s Elite Guard is strong, they don’t have the fighting force to fight against a large scale guild head on.

It’s already hard defending against a mid to small-scale guild after all, as seen with what happened before.

And it’s not like they’re a hardcore guild, so it’s not a sure thing if we’ll be able to get people to show up during noon on a Sunday.

We can’t really say that our chances for winning are high just yet.

†Black Magician†: It’s not as if we, ‘TMW’, have an easy time with our battles as well. We’re already having a hard time keeping ‘Noble Lineage’ in check at the Grand Fortress of Granberg. I’m sorry, but we can’t really afford to spare reinforcements for you as well.

TL note: While I still have no idea what the actual references for TMW and Noble Lineage are, I used Noble Lineage for the latter because they show up later on and actually has a sort of feudal Japan period government thing going on with their leader basing his character on Toyotomi Hideyoshi.

Rusian: It’s good enough if we can just have your word that you won’t come and attack us.

We weren’t actually expecting them to send out a large reinforcement our way.

I believe that simply having a non-aggression pact is already a large enough deterrent for other guilds.

Forming a treaty here would basically mean the same thing as being one of their vassals.

†Black Magician†: But even so, there’s a huge disparity in our forces. If I remember, yours is a four-man guild correct?

Rusian: That’s not quite right. We’ve taken Nekohime’s Elite Guard under our command.

Nekohime: We’re begging meow.

†Black Magician†: Alright, I understand. Then let’s form one.

It was an instant reply.

He didn’t even consult with his other guild members.

†Black Magician†: I don’t want to make an enemy out of you after all.

Even though he said that while smiling, Nekohime-san’s tail stood on end as if she was scared.

Rusian: Man, Nekohime’s Elite Guard is really famous isn’t it!

Nekohime: It’s not mew guild… That’s just misinformeowtion caused by rumors…

But it’s thanks to that that this went well you know?

Apricot: Then I take it that means ‘TMW’ is fine with entering a non-aggression pact with ‘Alley Cats’ right?

†Black Magician†: Yes, that’s fine. Well then, shall we get to forming this treaty then?

Forming the treaty… By that, you mean?

Rusian: Is just saying ‘We’re in a non-aggression pact’ not going to work?

†Black Magician†: Of course not!

He firmly declared that.

If he’s going to be that clear about it, I’m going to feel like I had the completely wrong idea about this.

†Black Magician†: First of all, please open this homepage.

It looks like he sent out some kind of URL.

When I copied and opened it up, it displayed the †Black Magician†’s guild’s, ‘TMW”s, homepage.

†Black Magician†: After you’ve entered your user and pass, I would like for all members of the alliance to log in here. After that, you can see the entirety of the treaty down below. Then just sign it after you’ve confirmed the above terms.

TL note: This might be a bit confusing for others, but FF11 had official pages for guilds so I’m assuming it was this. This is in no way a phishing scam.

Rusian: …Treaty?

†Black Magician†: A verbal promise is quite scary no?

Even if you tell me that… In the first place, contracts aren’t really a thing in net games.

Rusian: Since there’s no legal force that’s going to act on it in case something happens, isn’t there no meaning to this?

†Black Magician†: Oh dear no. If someone betray us after having gone this far…

He grinned and laughed as he then said,

†Black Magician†: Then that would be a just cause for us to crush them no?

Scary!

That face is completely trying to say ‘A certain someone won’t go betraying us now will they?’!

It’s because large guilds are like this that they’re scary!

Apricot: Of course, I understand. That’s right… Things like these are important.

What’s this? Master seems pleased about it.

Do you like this sort of thing?

Apricot: About this second clause on the treaty: ‘We will not assent to any hostile acts towards other guilds in the alliance. In case of an act falling under this situation, the guild in question will be immediately expelled from the alliance’— is what’s written here. You mentioned immediate expulsion here, so that means this would pass without consulting with any of the members of the alliance. It would be solely up to the jurisdiction of ‘TMW’, is what you’re trying to say, correct?

†Black Magician†: Fufufu, is that not to your satisfaction?

Apricot: Not at all. I was simply confirming if the other guilds are also aware of that fact.

You both seem like you’re getting along well.

Though I don’t really know about putting together these two who seem to get along with their scheming.

Rusian: But I mean, isn’t a treaty a bit too much for an alliance that would only last for a few days…

Apricot: Don’t be absurd! It’s focusing on small details at times like these which makes it so fun!

Rusian: That so…

This person is pretty troublesome as well.

But it’s because he’s a hardcore gamer that he has no time for silly betrayals like that, this †Black Magician†-san.

†Black Magician†: Ah, that’s right. We can’t send any reinforcements during the Castle Siege, but times other than that are a different matter. If it’s not much, then we can help out with anything.

Rusian: By that you mean?

†Black Magician†: We hold matches between two groups as a form of training at night you see. I was wondering if you would like to join us as well.

Rusian: Gladly!

†Black Magician†: Your movement is lacking!

Schwein: Nwaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Her charge was completely read by him.

Schwein’s body was ripped apart by wind magic.

Rusian: Oh my god they killed Schwein! You bastards!

TL note: A reference to South Park’s ‘Oh my god they killed Kenny!’. Yes, the Japanese also do references to South Park. Though the last time I’ve seen this joke used excessively was in Carnival Phantasm regarding Lancer that he might as well be their model for this one.

†Black Magician†: How about you just go back to your hangout spot? You also have a wife waiting for you no?

Ako: I will wait for you forever Rusian!

Rusian: That’s a death flag isn’t it?!

Gyah! The enemy forces are already heading this way!

†Cloud†: Protect Nekohime-sama!

How about also fighting instead of just sitting there protecting her, Mr. Nekohime’s Elite Guard’s member-san?!

Nekohime: Defeat the enemy for mew!

†Cloud†: Let’s gooooooooo!

Aren’t you being too easy?!

Just like they were told, Nekohime’s Elite Guard charged into the middle of the melee and disappeared into it.

Schwein: I still lack DPS even after I charge into them… I guess it’s time to break out the piggy bank and buy that huh… That Ox Bandit Sword…

Rusian: Don’t you think charging in with a weapon that specializes in dealing with archers is trying too hard?

Schwein: I have to do at least this much or we can’t win against them!

We don’t really have to win you know?!

With †Black Magician†-san as our enemy, we basically cannot win anyway you know?!

Nekohime: Nekohime-san has already turned into me-your goddess and has forsaken everything else. She’s going to be covered in the Armor of Amaterasu meow.

Rusian: That’s armor that disables you from attacking!

They’ve made her a palanquin!

She’s just there getting carried without doing anything!

Ako: Recovery for debuffs and ED for stuns… Recovery for debuffs and ED for stuns…

Rusian: Hang in there Ako!

I don’t even have an idea of what we’re practicing anymore.

We passed the time like that, enjoying our practice.

But at the very least, we were able to bond pretty well with members of Black Magician’s guild and everyone in Nekohime’s Elite Guard that we don’t even need any mention of our alliance to see that fact.

We can do our best with these members. I want to. We can definitely do it.

And then, we’ll win. It was enough to make me think that.

†Black Magician†: It’s almost time for the real deal. We’ll be launching ourselves on our enemy ‘Noble Lineage’ as well. I pray for your success.

Apricot: Yes. I pray for both our fortunes in this war.

The two guildmasters did a firm handshake.

†Black Magician†-san seems pumped up as the battle draws near.

†Black Magician†: But I must admit Apricot-san, your gear really is amazing isn’t it? Did you swipe a lot for that?

Apricot: It comes at no cost at all you know?

Rusian: Why would you blatantly lie there?!

Apricot: Oh, but it is at no cost. ‘An amount uncostly to one’s lifestyle’! That’s what no cost means no?”

Rusian: That’s not what that means!

Ako: So you’re saying that it’s not really worth that much to you even though you spent so much? That makes me so envious I could…

Rusian: Calm down Ako!

Schwein: Enough with that and let’s go already. We still have to meet up with the Elite Guard right?

Schwein hurried up and started heading for Cantor.

Master and Ako soon followed after her.

As I was also about to leave, †Black Magician†-san called out to me from behind.

†Black Magician†: Is Alley Cats going to retire from PVP after this single battle?

Rusian: Everything we did was all in order to win today. So I guess that’s how it would go.

†Black Magician†: …I see. That’s regrettable.

Just like †Black Magician†-san’s words, he really looked like he was regretting this.

†Black Magician†: You see, I was thinking of recruiting you all after this battle was over.

That would’ve been an honor.

Though it’s a shame, I think that would be impossible.

Rusian: Ah, that’s a bit impossible.

†Black Magician†: Ah, is it after all?

Rusian: Well of course right? You’re talking about Alley Cats here you know?

†Black Magician†-san laughed and nodded to it as if to agree with that matter of fact.

†Black Magician†: Though I still believe you all to be a considerable fighting force.

Rusian: …Thank you very much.

We’ve prepared, trained, and fought for weeks.

At first, I thought all this was just impossible.

But now, I can believe that we have a chance of winning this.
