712 – At the Cost of an Arm (side: Adofu)
Collapsed on the floor, Adofu looks up at the orthus.

“Grrr, graaaaaah!”

The orthus’ left head gasps in pain, while the right head glares at Adofu in disgust.

“I was able to pull it off, it looks like this is my limit…”

Adofu says weakly as he looks at his armless left shoulder.

『That was quite the spectacle. To think such a weakling would sacrifice an arm so willingly.』

Ares applauds cheerfully.

“Graah!”

The orthus’ left head spits out blood and Adofu’s broken sword.

“Guuu.”

The right head growls, and a magic circle appears inside the left head. The pain in its face softens.

“Some sort of [Rest] skill…”

The wound that Adofu managed to deal through his all-out attack has been unceremoniously healed. Adofu slumps down on the floor. Even though he intended to challenge Ares, all he could do was serve as entertainment. As frustrating as it is to him, that is the reality of his situation. The difference in strength was simply too large.

『Why so frustrated? Despite your weakness, you dealt a wound to my orthos. That is a splendid result. Take comfort in that as you pass away. Unless you truly thought you could challenge me personally?』

“I knew I wouldn’t stand a chance. That was why I had the others flee… I would have liked to get one good hit in all the same. I wish I was able to atleast throw a stone or something…”

『Orthos, the show is over. I am pleased, so they shall be killed in a single bite.』

With Ares’ command, the orthos walks over to Dylan.

“You bastard… We haven’t achieved anything! I can’t die yet…!”

Dylan clasps his sword tightly, but he can’t even raise it.

『Did you think you could defeat my orthos with your human body? Know your place, weakling… The few humans I know who could manage such a feat would be the divine skill holders alone.』

The orthos’s two mouths open wide as it prepares to bite through both Dylan’s upper body and lower body in one bite.

Dylan’s face contorts in fear as he looks up at the orthos.

“Damn it… Damn it!”

Dylan shouts in panic.

It happens just as the orthos bites down.

A tall window shatters, and fragments of stained glass rain down.

The man who crashed through the window lands next to Dylan. He is tall, with silver hair, and is half-naked. A slender golden sword is in his hand.

“Y-you are…?”

Adofu asks.

“Th-that silver hair, those golden eyes… No way!”

Dylan stares up at the man, seemingly having forgotten his injury.

『Today has brought many disturbances. You are in my presence. I almost want to praise your brazenness, but if I am interrupted such quick succession, a lesson must be taught so the people don’t get the wrong idea… Tear him apart, orthos.』

It happens just as Ares shouts his command. A red line traces through the orthos’s necks. Both of its heads fall to the floor, and its body collapses limp to the floor.

“What…?”

Ares shouts in surprise. A stir runs through the Harenae citizens.

“Th-this is no ordinary swordsman…!”

Adofu stares in amazement.

“The real Dragon Hunter!? T-that’s who you are, right? No one else could possibly cut its neck so easily!”

Dylan exclaims excitedly.

The silver haired man is the Dragon Hunter Volk. After the battle with Saint Lilixira, God’s Voice unleashed the [Spirit Servants] into the world, and stole Irushia, Aro, and treant into another world.

The [Spirit Servants] then scattered in different directions. From the dialogue between God’s Voice and Irushia, Volk inferred that they would target the places that Irushia had travelled to and so followed one of them to Harenae.

『To think a mere human would kill my orthos… You interest me. State your name.』

Volk ignores Ares’ request. He swings his sword, releasing a [Shockwave]. It flies past Ares to open a large hole in the cathedral wall behind him.

“Those who can move, run now. This place will soon become certain death. I plan on keeping that monster occupied, but no guarantees.”

Volk says, addressing the townsfolk. Despite their bewilderment, they nod, and fearfully begin to move.

『You would ignore? I am the rightful king of the world, the Hero, Ares. Do you not realise your disrespect?』

“Ares, huh? I remember hearing that name in stories. A Hero of ancient times, whose lust for power led to being sealed away as divine retribution. If you’re that Ares, then I can see why.”

Volk readies his sword.

『You seem to be underestimating me. Very well, I shall draw my sword once again… I was hoping a suitable opponent would appear.』

“…I had thought there was no one left in the world who I could strive to surpass, but now I’ll be able to fight a swordsman straight out of legend. I don’t know if I should say that the world is vast or that it’s narrow. But, I know that you are a reprehensible monster. I don’t plan on fighting fair.”

From the window overhead that Volk broke through, an eight metre wide chunk of stone falls towards Ares.

『How boring…』

Ares moves to avoid the stone, but it pursues him.

『I said, that’s boring.』

Ares swings his giant sword.

『[Shockwave]!』

The chunk of stone shatters into powder. But that is not all. The entire roof of the cathedral is blasted away.

On the skeletal frame that remains of the roof, a giant spider with a human upper body is revlealed… It is the atlach-nacha. She had been controlling the stone with her threads.

“…I see, so that’s the power of the strongest Hero in history. This is going to be hard.”

Volk says worriedly, staring up at the ceiling. He hadn’t expected such extreme destructive power to be released so casually.

『Fear me. Worship me. I will graciously forgive the sin of challenging me. The memory of facing me should be burned into your soul so it can be worn proudly even after death. However, the sin of disrespect will not be forgiven. I will toy with your lives. Do not expect a quick death.』
