World Peace

One time when Inglis and Rafinha were fourteen, they were fighting magicite beasts in the forests around Ymir.

“Haaaah!” Inglis’s roundhouse kick smashed into a wolf magicite beast, sending the massive monster flying. As it flew toward Rafinha, she drew the string of her Artifact bow.

“Rani! Your turn!”

“Okay! This should finish it off!” The arrow of light pierced the beast, and their mission was complete. “All right! Now that that’s done with, let’s head home and get something to eat.”

Inglis sighed.

“Huh? What’s wrong, Chris?”

“I was just thinking we haven’t fought anything that tough in a while. I wish we had stronger magicite beasts here.”

“Ha ha ha...” As Rafinha laughed weakly, a shadow flitted across the edge of her vision—a smaller wolf beast. One of the wolf pups must have transformed due to the Prism Flow. “Well, guess there’s one more to go.”

“Wait, Rani. It’s so little. We don’t have to hurt it, right?”

“What are you talking about? It may be relatively small, but it’s still a magicite beast. It’s even bigger than the horses. If we let it go, it’ll probably attack someone. We need to finish it off.”

“I guess you’re right. But you’re hungry, aren’t you? You head back first, I’ll handle it.”

“Really? See you later, then! ♪ I wonder what dinner’s gonna be toniiight...”

Once Rafinha was gone, Inglis looked around cautiously. “All right... Now!” Pulling out an iron collar with a chain attached, she tried to fit it around the neck of the small magicite beast.

“Awoo!”

“Now, now. Behave yourself.” The beast tried to squirm away, but she held it down. “I wonder if I’ll be able to keep it?” As hard as the wolf creature tried to wriggle its way away, Inglis was far stronger. “Let’s go. But keep quiet. They’ll be mad if they find out.”

As Inglis led the beast away, she found Rafinha waiting for her.

“Sheesh, Chris! What are you doing?!”

“You’re still here, Rani?!”

“I knew you were up to something. Why on Earth would you try to bring a magicite beast home?”

“I’ve been thinking. Maybe humans and magicite beasts can get along. This is all for the sake of world peace, I’m telling you, world peace!”

“No way! You, of all people, wanting peace?! What are you really up to?”

“I told you, world peace—“

“If you aren’t honest with me, I’m not letting you into the castle pantry anymore.”

“Ugh... Well, I haven’t fought anything strong lately...”

“And?”

“But I can catch a magicite beast, right? And bring it somewhere else and make sure it gets soaked in the Prism Flow.”

“And what’s that supposed to do?”

“Maybe it’ll get stronger that way...”

Some magicite beasts were weak, some were strong. Maybe it depended on how much they were exposed to the Prism Flow—if that was true, then maybe she needed to make sure it was absolutely soaked by it.

“So if you can’t find a strong foe, you want to make one?”

“Yep, that’s it. I guess you really do have me figured out.”

“Gotcha!”

Whoooosh!

An arrow of light struck the beast on its forehead, and Inglis’s prized trophy crumpled to the ground.

“Wh—?! What are you doing, Rani?!

“That’s absurd! I won’t let you keep a magicite beast! People can’t do that! It’s too dangerous, and you know that!”

“Ugh... Quit trying to ruin my fun!”

“That’s enough! Now let’s go home before you get any other weird ideas.”

“So then where am I supposed to find a good fight?”

“We’re going to the knights’ academy in the capital next year. I’m sure you’ll find someone strong there—if no one else, Rafael will be around.”

“Ahh, I wish it were next year already...”

And thus, their fourteenth year passed relatively peacefully.
