Chapter 16 “The Throne”

.

Part 1

Royal Palace of the Kingdom of Horfalt.

In the audience chamber, Roland was standing in front of his throne.

Milene stands in front of the Queen’s chair, neither of them wanting to take their seats.

In close proximity to them are [Bernard Fia Atlee], one of the ministers, and [Fred], Roland’s friend and personal doctor.

Ange brings only her father, Vince, to the audience chamber.

There were only six people in the large audience hall.

Ange bowed to Roland on the higher seat and then approached him in a calm but powerful voice.

“Your Majesty, I ask you to abdicate the throne.”

All of those present are nervous at Ange’s words.

It is the same for Ange herself.

Abdicate the throne —— in other words, give her the country.

Roland is the first to get out of the tension, and he chuckles.

“I never thought it would be Angelica, not Julius or Jake, who would be demanding that I give up my throne.”

The arrangements had already been made.

But if Roland refuses at this point, Ange will have no choice but to take forceful means.

The soldiers of the Redgrave family were already waiting on the other side of the large door that led out of the audience chamber and in the passageway leading into the room.

Vince is also here to show that the Redgrave family is on Ange’s side.

In front of Roland, Ange threatened, “I have the power to drag you down.”

Since everything is known in advance, everyone, including Milene, is not in a panic.

But depending on Roland’s response, there would be a dispute.

In fact, there was even a commotion in the royal palace as soldiers from the Redgrave family came in.

Depending on Roland’s response, blood will be spilled.

Minimize the bloodshed for Leon. For that reason, Ange will try to persuade him.

“After all this, there was no point in continuing the kingdom as it was now. Leon has also made up his mind. I ask Your Majesty to step down from the throne.”

It sounds like wishful speech, but what Ange wants to say is, “Leon is serious, too, so there’s no point in going against him.”

It is a forceful method that cannot be helped even if it is called usurpation.

When everyone’s eyes focused on Roland, the man himself seemed unconcerned.

“Alright!”

In front of Roland who answered quickly, the people around him had indescribable expressions on their faces.

Should he be considered gracious for not resisting, or should he be blamed for treating the throne so lightly?

Each of them has a complicated look on their faces.

The same goes for Ange.

“Is it okay for you to make such a quick and easy decision? Ano, more like——”

Perhaps sensing what Ange meant, Roland crosses his arms.

“I understand your desire to hear what I have to say, but as Angelica said, it can’t be helped under the circumstances. Milene has given me all the details. I don’t care whether your story is true or not. All that matters is the fact that the Empire is serious about destroying the Kingdom.”

There were some parts that he didn’t agree with, but he said he would hand over the throne without making any trouble.

Ange thanks him.

“Thank you for your wise decision.”

“Umu! —— That said, let me ask you about my upcoming treatment. Not to mention the guarantee of my life, but you will take my treatment into consideration, won’t you?”

“Eh? Ah, yes. We won’t execute His Majesty, not to mention the royal family. But, although it will be inconvenient, we will ask you to live in hiding on a nice floating island.”

Roland was worried about his future, and Milene looked dumbfounded.

But this is where Roland really got serious.

“I guess it can’t be helped. My presence could be a source of conflict. That being said, I suppose I can take my mistresses with me to the hiding place, right?”

Ange is upset by Roland’s request.

“Mistresses!? No, I don’t know, so I can’t say——”

“Here are the documents.”

“——Eh?”

Minister Bernard hands several documents to Ange with a blank expression on his face.

Looking closely, Minister Bernard had dark circles under his eyes.

Did he stay up all night for the past few days?

“I prepared these documents all night at His Majesty’s request. He really was a good-for-nothing bastard until the very end.”

Bernard cursed Roland expressionlessly.

Ange’s cheeks are drawn back as she looks over the documents.

“Women with whom he had a relationship and their children!?”

Roland put his hands on his chest and his face was looking diagonally upwards.

“There are few mistresses who follow me to the frontier, but I want to at least make those with whom I have relations happy. Many children also live in the city without knowing they have royal blood. Don’t give those children any trouble.”

At this moment, Ange was forced to take care of the women who had been Roland’s mistresses —— and their children.

What is disgusting is the documents that Bernard handed over.

The necessary documents for the transfer of the throne are ready, and this will ensure a smooth process of welcoming the new king.

Ange is trembling, and Milene looking at Roland like she’s looking at trash.

“You’ve been spreading a lot of love around outside”

Hearing Milene’s sarcasm, Roland was not frightened, but rather smiling.

He puffs out his chest as if he truly believes that he has not done anything to be accused of.

“Don’t worry. I have lied about my identity so as not to cause any trouble. None of the children know that they have royal blood in their veins.”

Fred, Roland’s friend, covered his face with his hands before the sight of his friend.

He can’t stand to see his friend in such a pathetic state, and he feels guilty for having helped Roland to play.

“Just having hidden children is a big problem!”

Vince wrinkles his brow and clenches his hands.

He had an unbearable look on his face when hearing about hidden children.

“I told him to stay out of trouble to that extent, but this good-for-nothing bastard——”

Something had happened in the past, and Vince suppressed his desire to be furious.

Like Milene, Ange looked at Roland as if she were looking at trash.

“As long as they have no unnecessary ambitions, I will be responsible for their protection.”

(Your Majesty —— no, I don’t know why I feel so irresistibly angry at the thought of having to take care of this. I wonder if Leon had these feelings too?)

Roland was relieved when Ange said she would guarantee it.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t expect that kid will take care of my mistresses. Oops, tell that kid to keep his hands off them. Especially if he lays his hands on my daughters, I’ll kill him! Tell him that.”

Milene blurts out.

“Even though you’ve been messing around with other people’s daughters for a long time.”

Everyone in the room had a variety of emotions directed at Roland, including anger and disappointment.

In the midst of all this, Roland looks unconcerned.

If anything, he even shows a sense of enjoyment, which makes those around him even more annoyed.

He even takes advantage of this situation to tell Ange about a certain individual.

“Why don’t I just tell you about him? I’m sure he still has some connections that could be of use to you guys. You can use him to your advantage. Well, I’m finally free of this troublesome position. I can’t imagine anyone wanting this position.”

Ange reprimands Roland, who says that the throne is just troublesome.

“It is not over yet. Even if Your Majesty approves, there will be nobles who will oppose it. In order to suppress them, we ask Your Majesty to cooperate with us until the matter is finished.”

Then Roland grinned.

When he tosses a bundle of documents to her, she is surprised when she receives it.

“Are these the signatures of the nobles? When were they collected!?”

There was a complete set of papers with a pledge to obey the new king.

Roland shrugs his shoulders as if to say that he had a hard time.

“Do you think I didn’t see this coming? I have always had a weakness of the nobles. I was able to play my trump card at the right moment. Now you have no obstacles.”

Roland started laughing, but the people around him had bitter looks on their faces.

Milene represents everyone’s feelings.

“I wish you could have shown that competence regularly.”

Ange agrees and nods deeply.

But her expression relaxed a bit when she saw a bunch of papers.

(With this, I can help Leon. The rest is——)

Part 2

Only two people remained in the audience room, Roland and Milene.

Milene is blatantly disgusted with Roland because there is nobody else’s view of her.

“I wondered what you were doing sneaking around, were you preparing to give up the throne? You really are capable only at times like this. You must be so happy to have abdicated the throne that it makes you want to jump up and down, don’t you? How does it feel to be free?”

Roland had his back turned to Milene, who verbally criticized Roland.

The person in question is standing in front of the window looking out.

“I could show you my dance right here and now.”

“No, thank you. Are you sure about that? Depending on those kids, they may change their mind and send us to execution.”

Roland turned around to see the worried look on Milene’s face.

“I can assure you that’s not going to happen. That boy is crazy about you.”

“When someone is in a position of responsibility, their policies and opinions will change.”

“No, they won’t break their promises.”

Seeing Roland say this with his head down, Milene might have wondered.

“You usually bicker with each other, but you trust him.”

“I trust him.”

Roland raises his head and looks somewhere far away and says.

“Now only the boy can stand against the Empire. That boy will fight and risk his life for the kingdom until the very end. —— He’s a complicated guy. He should have just run away by himself, but because he has a poor sense of responsibility, he always carries a heavy burden.”

Milene crosses her arms as if to hug herself, then looks a little bitter.

“He’s a clumsy kid.”

The corners of Roland’s mouth turn up at the sight of her face, but he hides it with his hand.

“Anyway, I don’t understand why someone would want to sit on a throne that’s like a punishment game.”

Milene let out a sigh.

“You really don’t like being king, huh?”

Roland thinks about what happened after he ascended the throne and makes a disgusted face.

“I really hate it! It’s refreshing to know I’ll be quitting safely.”

Roland does not even try to hide his true feelings that he does not want to be a king.

Then Roland mutters.

“That being said, I didn’t think it would be Bartfalt——”

“What’s wrong?”

When Milene tilts her head, Roland puts his back to her again and looks out the window.

“I just thought it was karma.”

What is karma of the Bartfalt family? Milene asked, but Roland did not answer until the end.
