Chapter Two: Repaying Kindness

“Come! Let’s go!”
Father reached toward my outstretched hand. He took my hand into his and stood up.
“Motoyasu, you . . .”
At a loss for words, Itsuki glared at me. He could glare at me all he wanted. I wasn’t going to back down! I would continue fighting—for world peace, for Father, and for Filo-tan! It didn’t matter if my opponent was Itsuki, Ren, or even a god! I wasn’t going to lose!
“It’s best not to believe anything that crimson swine next to you says, Itsuki!”
“Crimson swine? Judging from the way you worded that, I’m guessing you mean Myne, right?!”
“That’s right. She’s a fat, ugly red pig. Thus, ‘crimson swine.’ Think about this carefully, Itsuki. Would a person truly guilty of trying to rape someone let themselves get dragged in looking like this?”
“I . . . I don’t care what you say! Look at Myne crying!”
“Deceived by a pig’s tears! It’s like looking at my past self. Pathetic!”
“What did you say?!”
Itsuki clearly didn’t believe that I had come from the future at all. Ren seemed undecided and was looking back and forth at me and Itsuki.
“Wh . . . what are you waiting for?! Men! Put an end to the Spear—”
I emitted a palpable wave of malice like I’d learned from Father and glared at them. I focused the pressure on Trash, Itsuki, and the crimson swine. That’s all it took to make the three of them—even the crimson swine—think twice about speaking.
“Don’t make me laugh. I’m in a good mood today, so I’ll let you off the hook for now. But you better think long and hard about this and choose to do the right thing.”
Yes! I had been able to atone for one of my sins! It was a beautiful day, I say!
“Come then, Father. Let’s go!”
“Oh, umm, okay!”
I took Father’s hand and we headed out of the castle, leaving the group of slandering conspirators behind.

“Thank you, Kitamura!”
After we left the castle and came to the plaza, Father graciously expressed his gratitude. I had saved him from the crimson swine’s plot. I was on cloud nine! Coming to this world and successfully managing to save its people couldn’t even begin to compare to this feeling of pride and bliss!
“Kitamura . . . To be completely honest, I felt a bit uncomfortable around you before today. But you really do believe in me.”
I’d never seen Father look like this. He blushed slightly and scratched his head while thanking me.
“I’m the Love Hunter and I’ve come from the future! It goes without saying that you would be telling the truth!”
There was no greater honor than to be thanked by Filo-tan’s father! Come hell or high water, I would never forget this day!
“Now then, Father. I have a favor to ask of you.”
Now that I thought about it, Father had originally called me by my first name, Motoyasu, from the first time we met. Having him call me by my last name felt awkward.
“Please dispense with the formalities and call me by my first name, Motoyasu.”
“Umm . . .”
Father had a troubled look on his face. But I was his son-in-law, so it only made sense for Father to call me by my first name, I say!
“Is something wrong?”
“No, it’s just that . . . It feels strange treating the one person that believed in me without due respect.”
“Don’t let it bother you! It’ll make me happy if you call me Motoyasu!”
“Oh, really? Okay then, Moto . . . yasu.”
“Come on! Don’t worry about it!”
“Umm . . . I’m sorry. I’ll try, but it will take some time to get used to.”
Father looked embarrassed when he replied. Hmm . . . I would have been happier if he addressed me in a more abusive manner. As I mulled over it, I took a long, hard look at Father. He was in his underwear.
That’s right! He’d been stripped of all of his possessions by the crimson swine! I’d gotten Father to safety, so I wondered if I should go kill the crimson swine and take his stuff back now. Yes! That was what I needed to do. I was sure that would make Father smile and praise me. I’d make the crimson swine pay for her sins with her life! That’s what Father would have done.
“Please wait here for a few minutes.”
“Huh? Where are you going? That’s the way to the castle!”
Father called out after me when I started to head back toward the castle. His expression was a mixture of confusion and worry.
“Is something wrong?”
“Why are you going back to the castle?”
“Ha! Ha! Ha! What do you mean? I’m going to go slaughter that red pig and get all of your stuff back, of course! If Itsuki or Ren try to interfere, I’ll beat them to a pulp, but I won’t kill them. I do have principles, you know!”
“What?! Umm, uhh . . . Motoyasu, you don’t need to do that! Please! Do I need to beg you?!”
Father had an expression of shock on his face and a distant look in his eyes as he spoke. He was incredibly kind, but he seemed a bit too soft. He certainly didn’t seem like the same person that would eventually have the names of Trash and the crimson swine changed to the ones they deserved.
I guess this incredible kindness was Father’s true nature. It was no wonder that Filo-tan had turned out to be such a magnificent angel. But it would take more than this to stifle my urge to kill that crimson swine!
“Are you sure? If we act now, I can slaughter them in an instant. Trash and Witch are a curse upon this world, I say!”
“Just forget about them. I understand that you’re incredibly strong and you believe in me. But . . . let’s just let it go.”
“You’re so kind! Your compassion moves me to tears, Father!”
“Umm, please don’t do that when there are so many people around!”
I was crying and bowing my head to Father. The people walking by kept looking at us with confused looks on their faces. I might end up embarrassing Father if I wasn’t careful.
“But, Father, we can’t have you running around in your underwear.”
“Yeah, but all of my money was stolen.”
“Worry not! Please, use mine!”
“Huh? Are you sure?!”
I gave Father my money pouch. My assets were Father’s assets, I say!
“Anything of mine is yours! And anything of yours is yours too!”
“You’re making me sound like a bully!”
Father opened the pouch and responded in disbelief. I had used some of the money to buy the filolial egg, but there was still a good amount left.
“What are you saying? This is us we’re talking about!”
“But what are you going to do if I take this money?”
“Ha! Ha! Ha! That’s not a problem!”
“No, seriously, what will you do?”
“Ha! Ha! Ha!”
“Stop trying to avoid answering by laughing. Umm . . . Well, thank you. I’ll borrow half, then.”
Father took half of the money and returned the pouch. Just as expected of Father! He was so humble.
“Let’s go buy you some equipment then!”
“Y-yeah.”
I took Father and headed into the castle town. The fresh morning air filled my lungs.

There, we ran into the owner of the weapon shop. Father had been on good terms with him the first time around.
“Hey there, shield kid.”
“Umm . . .”
Father had a troubled look on his face. The weapon shop owner was glaring at him. Without hesitation, I stepped forward to protect Father.
“I heard that you tried to take advantage of your friend. Come over here and let me give you a hard smack,” the weapon shop owner growled.
“You’re wrong, I say!”

“Huh? Who are you? Judging by that spear, I’m guessing you must be the Spear Hero.”
“I am, indeed! But you have one thing wrong. Father has tried to take advantage of no one!”
“I wasn’t talking to you. I was talking to the kid, there.”
“I . . . didn’t do it.”
Father averted his eyes when he responded, as if he were upset. The weapon shop owner continued glaring at Father for several moments and then sighed. His face softened.
“I figured as much. You don’t seem like the type to try something like that right out of the gate.”
“You believe me?!”
“What can I say? That woman was acting a lot more suspicious than you were. You get a good sense for these things after years of dealing with customers.”
“It’s such a relief to hear that, old guy.”
“Besides, I doubt you would look like that if you really had been guilty. I’m sure you would have known what was coming and made a run for it before they caught you.”
“Yeah, you’ve got a point there.”
“So what now? Don’t you need some clothes?”
“We’ll pay with this!” I said.
I handed the money pouch to the old weapon shop guy.
“Please take this money and give us some equipment that would be good for Father.”
“But that’s your money . . . Motoyasu . . .”
“Ha! Ha! Ha!”
“Stop trying to avoid answering by laughing.”
“You two . . . I’m glad you seem to have found a friend, kid.”
The weapon shop owner seemed to be in a good mood. He went back inside of the shop and started to choose armor that would be good for Father.
“How does chainmail sound? You’ve had some bad luck, kid, so I’ll throw it in for free.”
“No thanks. I’ll pass.”
There was a hint of annoyance in Father’s voice. He pushed the chainmail away and put on some leather armor instead. He probably didn’t like the idea of wearing something that looked like the equipment that was stolen from him.
“You sure?”
“Here . . . Motoyasu. This is your money.”
The shop owner gave Father his change and Father politely handed it to me.
“Don’t worry about it!”
“I am worried about it.”
“So what now? What are you two planning on doing?”
“I’m already strong enough, so I’m going to help Father get stronger!”
“I thought the legendary weapons would clash if heroes fought together,” Father said.
“That’s right. But I told you we can share materials for the weapons.”
“Oh yeah, you did. Does that mean I can get strong enough to put up a fight if you gather materials for me and then I use the power-up methods you told me about?”
“I do believe that should work for now!”
“Okay. Let’s stick together for a while, then.”
“Understood! As you wish!”
I bowed my head in a show of loyalty to Father. A troubled expression came over his face and he backed away several steps.
“Seriously, Motoyasu, stop that!”
“Your friend sure is weird, kid.”
“This is only going to create more misunderstandings,” Father mumbled with a sigh.
We all stood there chatting for a moment and then I felt the incubator I’d been keeping warm in my pocket start shaking.
“Oh?”
I pulled the incubator out and sat it on the shop counter.
“Huh? Did you buy a monster egg?” the owner asked.
“I did indeed! It’s a filolial egg, I say!”
“Those are the birds that pull the carriages, right?” Father asked.
“It’s the same divine bird that Filo-tan is!”
“I see. You really do love those monsters, don’t you?”
“I do!”
We stood there watching the egg shake for a moment and then the shell cracked open.
“Chirp!”
The filolial peeked out of the egg and chirped cheerfully. It was a . . . black male filolial. As a connoisseur of filolials, I’d developed a discriminating eye. Identifying their sex was no problem for me!
“Chirp!”
I had already registered the monster seal to myself. Monsters meant to be raised by people had seals applied before birth. The seal was basically an imprinted pattern that served as a bond between the filolial and its owner.
“Wow! It’s so cute! Umm . . . Motoyasu? Why do you look so disappointed?”
“I’m not disappointed!”
The filolial clearly wasn’t Filo-tan. But there was no use crying over spilled milk. I reached a finger out toward the filolial and brushed his neck gently.
“Chirp chiiiirp!”
“What should we call you? Let’s see . . . How about Kuro?”
“Because it’s black and ‘kuro’ means black? That’s not very original.”
Father didn’t seem to appreciate my choice. I would probably have to buy tons of eggs before I found Filo-tan. I’d never be able to make all the names original. He was a black filolial, so it made sense. The name just felt right to me. But if Father didn’t like it, then I was willing to choose a different name.
“If you don’t like that, then how about something like Black Thunder?”
“I’m not so sure about that. It’d probably be better to stick with Kuro.”
“Chirp!”
That settled it. This little fellow would be named Kuro. I was certain he would grow up to be a lively angel.
“Now we have one more companion!”
“He’s not just a pet, then?”
“Filolials are extremely reliable companions! No, they’re family, I say!”
“You never cease to amaze me, Motoyasu.”
“Anyway, helping Father and raising filolials is what I’ll be doing!”
“Well, good luck with that, both of you,” the old guy said.
“Thanks. We’ll do our best.”
“And we’re off, I say!”
“Chirp!”
The filolial jumped onto the palm of my hand and we made our way out of the castle town.
