A Package

One day, Principal Miriela stopped Inglis and Rafinha as they were returning to the dorms. “Inglis, Rafinha, I have a package for you.”

“Huh? That’s a big box. I wonder what’s inside,” Rafinha pondered.

“Rani, there’s a letter attached. Ah, it’s from my mother and Aunt Irina!”

“Oh, wow! What’d they say? What’d they say?”

“I’ll read it out loud. ‘How are you two getting along? It’s been very quiet here without you both, and a bit empty too. Maybe we’re the ones having a hard time adjusting.’”

Rafinha sighed. “It’s not just you, mom... I wish I was back in Ymir. There I could eat my fill...”

With the cafeteria in shambles, Inglis and Rafinha had been contending with their empty bellies lately.

“There, there, Rani. ‘Since they should keep long enough, we baked some of the cookies you like. There aren’t many, but we hope you enjoy them.’”

“Ooh! That’s mom and Aunt Serena for you! The whole box is full of cookies!”

“We’re saved. We’ll have to write a thank-you letter to them later.”

Having broken into a cold sweat, Principal Miriela interjected. “What do they mean, ‘not many’? Just looking at that packed box gives me heartburn.”

“Really?” Rafinha asked.

“I don’t think there’s that many,” Inglis said.

Miriela let out a defeated laugh. “There must never have been a dull moment for your mothers, having daughters who eat so much.”

“I don’t think they ever saw it as a problem,” Rafinha answered.

“If anything, they eat more than we do,” Inglis added.

“What?! Ah, I see. It comes from your mothers’ side of the family...”

“Anyway, Chris, you’re right. Why don’t we write to them and invite them to the capital? I want them to try the menu we thought up for the cafeteria!”

“That’s a good idea.”

“Eeek! N-No! Absolutely not! The cafeteria is for students and faculty only!” Principal Miriela insisted.

“Aww, are you sure?” Inglis and Rafinha asked together.

Principal Miriela sighed. “Two more of you, and the food costs would drive the academy bankrupt.” She quietly put a hand over her beating heart and patted her chest.
